Introduction: I teach world music instruments including djembe, Arabic tambourine, frame drums, didgeridoo, esraj, harmonica, Native American flute, and voice. I am versed in a wide breadth of musical styles, genres, and rhythms from around the world. I am very passionate about helping people free their voices and delight in teaching people to sing and drum at the same time. By using different modalities and switching between them, I help people free their voices in ways they never imagined. Together, we look at the nuts and bolts of singing including proper breathing techniques, relaxing and opening the throat, projection, pitch, scales, etc. My philosophy of singing/voicework is 3 fold: 1. Tune the instrument. 2. play music (sing) with your tuned instrument 3. connect in with your intention/emotional resonance with the song and make it uniquely yours to express your soul song. I believe that so much of voice work is psychological, so with students who want to delve into this realm, I use expressive arts techniques to help shake loose our restrictions and limitations we place on ourselves. These creative processes provide a lot of insight and allow for release of the voice and throat to really sing, sound and speak your truth. I also use sound meditations to help people relax and go deep into their bodies with sound in a non-self-conscious manner. My voice lessons are so much more than technical tuning and musical skills. Think a dose of therapy with lots of technical instruction, improv, performance coaching, creating your own songs, presentations, play, and getting out of your own way. Before your know it, you will be expressing your voice with a lot of confidence and joy and showing up more powerfully in life. I love helping people open to their own creative power and free their voices!

I did an eight week "Free Your Voice" course with Amber Field (after completing a powerful 3 hour workshop with her on the same subject) this past Spring (Jan-Feb). This was a truly incredible experience for me. I love singing and did a lot of singing in choirs when I was growing up, but at the same time am painfully self-conscious about my voice outside of a large group context. Amber guided our group of approximately 20 through a wide range of exercises and activities that created a really safe, accepting space for us to explore sound in a very organic way. There was a wonderful element of lightheartedness and play to all of it, where we were free to just be silly, and to experiment, and to laugh, and have fun without being self conscious about any of it. Sure, it took us a little time to fully embrace and realize we WERE safe to do so, but by the end everyone had really stepped up and come out of their shells in such a beautiful way! The atmosphere Amber inspires and creates is one of loving acceptance of one another with all of our various differences and unique qualities, vocally and otherwise - that was so incredibly nourishing and just FUN for all of us. Seriously, I think everyone commented at the end to the effect of how grateful we were for this opportunity to play - something, which, as adults we don't often get, or give ourselves permission, to do - not to mention sing, together. For me, personally, the most moving experience happened near the end of the course at home. I was actually watching a youtube video with my husband - DMB performing one of our favorite "us" songs - and I started singing along to it with him, and just really immersing in enjoying that experience without worrying about what my voice sounded like. Before, I might have sung very softly or hummed along and let him do most of the singing. Afterwards, he exclaimed: I LOVE this Free Your Voice class you're taking because NOW you actually sing WITH me!" Such a special moment of bonding for us. I can't say how much I miss having this class and this group of people to come and share of myself with in this way on a weekly basis. It was truly a gift for me. What could have been better? Honestly, nothing. It was exactly right for me.

When you take Amber's class be prepared to see yourself through sound and let your inhibitions go. Amber's class is amazing, nurturing, eyeopening and most of all healing. I wanted to take a class that was different from any voice class anyone could take. I don't really sing but I love to sing and want to be comfortable doing it without the tightness in my throat when someone is looking. Amber creates a environment where you can find your inner beauty. It will be ugly and uncomfortable in the beginning as you peel away the layers of pretension that you have built around you over time. As you go through the class something new and beautiful is revealed each time. You have to take it to understand it. When you hear about it and something stirs in your heart, then it means this is for you. Free your voice, find your truth.
