Hired on Thumbtack
My interaction with Anthony started out great. He said he was familiar with installing overhead garage storage racks and quoted me 3-5 hours for both racks. We scheduled for him to come out the following morning. He was professional, communicated well and sent videos explaining code restrictions for my garage. After making a decision for where I wanted the racks, I thought he would be done by the end of the day.
That evening, I arrived home and the first rack was about 80-90% complete and the second rack hadn’t been started. Anthony was a solid 8 hours into the job. Anthony apologized for the delay and said he would knock a couple hours of the bill for the inconvenience. He said that he would come back the following morning and finish the job, adding that the second rack would take him much less time. I took his word for it and figured I’d only have to fork over a little more than anticipated.
Later that night, he sent an invoice for 6 hours of labor, a $40 travel/service fee (originally agreed upon) and a $75 storage rack fee. The storage rack fee was not disclosed in his thumbtack profile and was not discussed prior to or after starting the job.
The following day, Anthony spent 8 hours completing the first rack and maybe getting about 50% through the second. He said that he ran into complications with the second rack after almost being finished and having to start over. He apologized and said he would take a couple hours off and only charge me for what he originally quoted me (3-5 hours per rack). Except he quoted me 1-2 hours per rack and 3-5 for both! He said he would come back Monday to complete it and I agreed before getting suspicious and doing some research.
I contacted SafeRacks (the manufacturer of the racks) and they told me that each rack should take about 2 hours to install and that under no circumstance should it take over two days for two racks. SafeRacks offers flat rate installs for $150 per rack and just the first day of Anthony’s labor was more than double that.
Anthony sent me another invoice for over $300 that night. I told him what SafeRacks had told me and that I no longer wanted him to complete the job. I, begrudgingly, sent him $250 and will find someone else to complete the job.
I would not recommend Anthony unless you enjoy lighting money on fire.
