When I had to get my roof replaced I had no shortage of of contractor options. Everyone says they can and will replace your roof quickly and for a reasonable price however once I actually started getting bids I realized that wasn’t really true. I got a lot a bids.. prices varied so much, which didn’t make sense since I have a standard roof, nothing really special about it. When I asked why the roof would cost this much or why I should choose this contractor over that contractor I got the same answer every time, because “we’re better than that guy”. Not exactly what I was looking for. Once I met with Sustainable Living Builders however that all changed. No pressure from these guys. They came in, gave me a quick proposal and answered all of my questions. They didn’t really sell me per se, they just have me the information I asked for and said they could start on so and so day. Their price was fair, not the cheapest and definitely not the most expensive but right in the range I determined was appropriate and because they were easy, up front and no pressure I went with them. My roof itself was done quickly, and the small bit of extra work needed was cleared by me instead of showing up as a surprise at the end. There was no mess or fuss, they came on, worked and left. Easy. I would use them again for other work when / if it comes up and highly recommend them.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.
