WHY CAN’T WE STOP FIGHTING?
Fighting is the outcome of not being able to manage your differences—an essential part of any relationship. If you both could sit down and dispassionately sort out your differences, there would be no fighting. You can’t stop fighting because once you start, heated emotions, defensiveness, and aggression kick in and releases the fight-or-flight hormones of adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine. Unfortunately, this process can shut down critical thinking and analysis. Mammals (including humans) are not designed to sit still through these stormy emotional states. What is most important about this process of getting into arguments or outright fights is that there is a part of your brain that senses threat way before you know it is present. It is called the Amygdala and its job is to keep you safe. The amygdala can easily be aroused by a slight negative interpretation of something uttered by a loved one or even a glance that is seen as a critical assessment. Once it is triggered, your brain has lost its power to evaluate what's going on--your body is automatically launched quickly into an elevated emotional state.
