Bruce quickly responded to my request for a hot water heater repair, was at my house in under 60 mins on a Saturday. After an honest assessment that the whole heater needed to be replaced (my GE model was discontinued), Bruce was able to remove and install a new heater (with new valves, pipes, insulation, sediment trap) in under 4 hours. Very impressed, he’s definitely my new go-to guy!!

Excellent experience with Juan. He was very responsive, punctual, quickly diagnosed the issue (I had a leak in my sprinkler system), and provided me a fair quote for the work to repair. He repaired the same day. I'll be using him on all future plumbing jobs I have. I strongly recommend.

I'm very happy that I was connected with TJ and House to Home on Thumbtack. I recently bought a home and initially requested a quote for the installation of two new toilets. I then asked TJ about some additional work and we set up a few projects. TJ's prices are reasonable, his quality of work is excellent, he has a great attitude and he's extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of home repairs. He's helped me focus on items that need immediate attention because they affect the structure and integrity of the house and has also informed me about things to consider down the line. Things have gone so well that in addition to the toilets, he's installed a kitchen faucet, a cooktop and hood, which required extensive repairs of the venting, gas, and electric lines (former owner did a lot of shoddy stuff around the house). He's currently installing a new microwave above the wall oven and reframing the cabinet to accommodate it. The next project will involve some plumbing updates. TJ is in demand and has a busy schedule, but he's always very responsive, always shows up and leaves things cleaner than when he found them. He also goes above and beyond the call of duty when he sees a problem and fixes it just because. For example, he installed a new light fixture in the laundry room because the old one was an eyesore. Without hesitation, I highly recommend TJ for all of your home repair needs.

My experience with Blue Streak Plumbing was very good. The plumber, Efrain, was extremely professional, communicated very well and was fair. He was very responsive during the Thumbtack selection process to find the right plumber and quoted me a fair price. Efrain arrived early and got to the root of my plumbing issue very fast. He showed me what he was doing every step of the way and educated me on what causes the plumbing issue. The repair work was very clean and professional looking. I would definable hire Blue Streak again and recommend their service to others

I have an old hardwood floor under an old carpet. And there is some termite damage. Joel and his team helped me to remove the carpet, repair termite damage, and sand and refinish the hardwood floor. They also installed new base boards. Joel responded to my quest promptly, did a free measurement and estimate, explained and wrote down everything 100% clear, and finished the job on schedule. They did an excellent job at a very competitive price.

I needed a lot of work as home had been neglected for several years. Jay came to estimate window installation, and I found he was knowledgeble in all areas of building, updating and code. I found him to be trustsworthy and he never pushed his ideas or asked for more funds than were originally agreed. He works clean and is very personable which helps when you have someone working in your home. I have recommended him to friends and family..their only complaint was they had run out of projects for him.

Scott swan has done an incredible job at my home. He repaired a water damaged wall in my family room He drywalled the wall, textured the wall to match the rest of the room, and painted. Scott is also painting the outside of my home. Scott has worked with more precision, sanding, sealing, primer before painting, than anyone i have ever hired in the past. I highly recommend Scott Swan. He is honest, trustworthy, and shows up.

Giovanni form Art Italia is THE BEST! Seriously, the best. If you are reading this because you are in search of a tile professional, HIRE HIM RIGHT AWAY. You will NOT find anyone better. We love him, and will always hire him for our tile work, for several reasons: 1.) He's always on time. Which, believe it or not, is very rare in the construction business. 2.) He's so friendly and wonderful to work with. We are happy our bathroom is finished, but we miss having him around! And our puppies do, too. That's another bonus - if you have pets, he will make them feel at ease :) 3.) His prices are extremely competitive. I met with 3 contractors and another tile installer, and Giovanni had the best price for the level of service. I could tell that some of the contractors didn't know what they were talking about, so it was a no-brainer to hire Giovanni because he is an expert with a very fair price. 4.) He's very collaborative and gives great advice. He helped us choose our grout colors, and even advised us on the tile size - we were going to go with 3x6 subway tile, but Giovanni suggested we upgrade to 4x12, because it is more modern. We were also going to go with a bullnose finish, but he advised that we go with a black metal trim. We are SO glad we listened to him because everything looks sharp. 5.) Lastly, and most importantly, **his work is impeccable**. Our bathroom looks beautiful, and everyone comments on how "perfect" the tile is. I had a handyman at the house (for electrical & plumbing) at the same time Giovanni was working, and he even commented on the tile: "Wow, that is the best tile job I've ever seen." If you need a full renovation, or small tile repair, do exactly what his shirts say ... KEEP CALM AND CALL GIOVANNI! You won't be disappointed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
