Charles is a very talented writer and worked already on a few internationally acclaimed projects, for the BBC and more recently for a world class Cuban opera. Another important skill, he translates very well written ideas into video concepts, he understands well both worlds. I worked with him on a few projects and I will sure use his talents again.

I did business with Lori after losing my job of 15 years, I needed to update and revamp my Resume along with creating a professional catchy cover letter. I was stuck with writers block and needed a jump start. I reached out to several resume writers and Lori is the one that had caring in her style and truly wanted to help. She made the whole process easy for me and not only helped me with my resume and cover letter she also gave me a pep talk that helped me get my mojo back. Lori is one of those persons that still exists that care about how and what she does. With her help I am back in business and options are opening up for me. I would rehire her in a second and if you need help writing a document or reviewing documents she is your person.

I appreciate his attention to detail. He is informative and offers insight as to why he is making certain edits to aid in my growth and development as a writer. He provides constructive criticism when necessary while preserving my autonomy. He has been a valuable asset to my research writing. Noteworthy: Julian is not trained in scientific writing and has provided me with the most meaningful edits when compared to those who are trained in the field. The sign of a truly extraordinary editor. Highly recommend.

Michael is an outstanding book editor. I've been working with him on my manuscript for the past two years. He excels in the intangibles, with terrific suggestions about improving a story's pace, character development and plot. So often when Michael suggests something, a lightbulb goes off in my head and I think: Of course! Why didn't I think of that? Beyond his uncanny ability to see where my story should be going, he also detects what's missing. This is a trait any writer wants to have in an editor--an ability to identify what needs to be added or expanded upon. Beyond his professional editing skills, Michael is consistently prompt and turns drafts around well within his promised timeframe. Michael is not only a great editor but he can, if needed, be a coach as well. He knows what his writers are going through, because he's a writer himself. He has been important to me in his coaching role, because he's helped me plow through the rough spots that are inevitable in completing something as complicated as a novel. He becomes a partner in getting the job done, and his words of encouragement and hope make all the difference.

Tommy is such a great guy and talented writer. He was happy to meet in person at a Starbucks in SOMA. He gave me great advice about how to choose my field (I wasn’t’ so sure about my path at the time). He was so nice that he actually edited my grad school resume and personal statement which is a lot longer than a cover letter and the resume for grad school applications is not in a typical business format. And he did a wonderful job and the personal statement is now more touching as well as informational. He is also patient because he did 4 drafts for me! I’m confident I will get into my dream school with his help. Thank you Tommy!

Ellie Schamber mentored me through my graduate prerequisite courses in Psychology as well as my Ph.D. dissertation. She also edited many of my papers and the dissertation. Ellie is a very good writer, and she did an excellent job of both guiding me and editing the manuscript. The dissertation was approved and praised by the academic dean for its writing as well as the content. We are now collaborating on a book, and I am very pleased with her ability to understand abstract ideas and articulate them clearly. Ellie always came on time, over the period of several years, and provided me with the highest quality work.

      About

I'm very experienced with helping people work through initial ideas (whether a book project, a college application, a graduate school statement of purpose, or a proposal) as well as helping them through each step of the process. I'm an excellent editor with years of experience in journal and book editing, as well as as professor who regularly assists students with writing projects.

Katie helped me so much in high school with writing- both for school and for creative purposes. With her helpful instruction, I was able to move past writer's block and actually write what I meant rather than get stuck in word choice or syntax, which she also helped me with during editing instruction. Katie was invaluable during my high school experience and without her, I would not have been able to succeed in college or have been able to write coherent and passionate application essays. She's also great at research and when I was assigned huge research projects for AP U.S. History or even for Spanish class, she was able to help me use library databases and archives to find primary source material.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

        • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
        • Strong writing skills.
        • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
        • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
        • Expertise in your target area.
        • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

        • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
        • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
