I am Dissapointed in the fact that he charge us a 75.00 "Estimate fee" for coming out to look at the project. He didn't tell my wife that in the original conversation but did convey to me that there would be a fee, but that it would then be applied to any work that was bid on, which I was ok with as I had 2 jobs for Michael 1 electrical, 1 Irrigation, which he bid on to do the work, the date was set a week and a half out as he was busy, but then he cancelled that date but never selected another one to re schedule, so I provided another date for him (Following week) and he couldn't make that one either and I was expecting a call or something to reschedule for a third time but have heard nothing. My biggest frustration is that he charged me an estimate fee just to bid on work, but then didn't come do the work, but took the 75.00 for telling me how much it would cost for the work requested... I'd be ok with that if I was the one to not accept his bid I'd pay for his time, but I did accept the bid and scheduled the work. I was expecting that the money would apply to the future work to be completed. Basically in my opinion he cancelled the jobs and kept the money.... I will now go find another source to complete this task... I require no more contact from his service

Kevin was awesome! I was able to make an appointment the same week to have our sprinklers and irrigation system checked and fixed. Kevin arrived promptly on time, and quickly diagnosed and fixed a broken pipe, adjusted our sprinklers, and diagnosed an issue with our old sprinkler timer. He recommended replacing the sprinkler timer, and even offered to let me buy it and just have him install it for a very reasonable price. I really appreciated that Kevin explained everything he was doing and showed me small changes we could do ourselves. It was clear that great service and helping his customers and neighbors was his top priority. We highly recommend and will definitely hire Kevin again for our lawn & garden.

Thompson was exceptional with knowledge and knew instantly the difficulty of why certain zones were not working. He is an experienced, licensed person who knows old and new/updated ways to provide better coverage with valves and drip systems; was extremely thorough making sure everything worked correctly and well (great follow-through)! His team was worth the value of expense, time given and 'learning how to do' plus was definitely affordable. We definitely would refer Thompson Landscaping for irrigation installation, repairs and updates.

Benito is a genuine, honest person, very professional and responsive. We shopped around for pricing with at least 2 other contractors. His pricing was average like the other quotes we received. He was most helpful, and was able to help us cut cost in some areas so that we can save money, but of course also make business on his end. Him and his team are hardworking and did a great job installing roughly 1,000 sqft of cement patio and roughly 1000 sqft of sod with drip irrigation system and mulch. They finished the job in 5 working days. I would hire him again and recommend Benito to anyone.

Chamberlain's took out all the lawn and plants in our front yard, laid concrete, planted new plants and trees and installed a drip irrigation system. They were respectful of our budget, worked with us on designing the layout for the concrete (we put in a patio/seating area and kept our sidewalk ADA friendly), took us shopping to view drought tolerant plants we might like and kept us informed on every step of the process. We've had many neighbors compliment us on the finished yard. It is low maintenance, requires a minimum of water and looks great!!!!

We had a general idea of what we wanted for our front yard but got overwhelmed/didn't have the time to deal with all the details and vision for the end product. We set out looking for a landscaper that would have the creativity/skill to create something we couldn't visualize. After meeting with a few people, Rubin completely won us over. He was able to map out a general plan and design by the end of our 1st meeting and started breaking ground faster than I could send emails to other contractors that "we were going with someone else." Rubin and his team made efficient, amazing decisions about each step in the process. He accommodated our schedule and would work around our times to sit down and have a meeting about every phase of the project. He was always honest, thoughtful, excited, realistic, and fair. Rubin would find samples of stone, rocks, and plants, place them in a way he thought WE would like and come back with new ideas if we questioned it even a smidge. It was assuring working with someone that had the gamate of experience and love for work. His background in horticulture really helped us make good decisions/compromises between plants I wanted vs ones we needed in different areas of the yard. In the end, he was able to incorporate everything our our list and more! Our front yard looks amazing and we have been getting compliments from the neighbors and random cars stopping in front of our house to look/take pictures. I totally get it....I did the same thing for MONTHS. But I have to tell you, its not worth it. Call Rubin and he will make something better for YOU!! THANKS RUBIN!!!!

Cris replaced my back fence, installed a new sprinkler system and sod in the back yard, repaired my front sprinklers and installed a wifi sprinkler controller that allows me to control the system with my phone. He did a great job all the way around. I would certainly call him again for landscaping and irrigation needs. I highly recommend him.

We were thoroughly satisfied with the concrete work done by Kris Fredrickson, Anderson Construction’s concrete contractor. Our new driveway and sidewalk look great. Kris listened to us and did his best to accommodate our wishes, going above and beyond. We would definitely hire him again and recommend him to others. And Mike Anderson stayed in constant communication w/us making sure that we were satisfied with how the project was proceeding.

Miguel did a great job on a sod installation and irrigation repair for my home. Miguel was super fast, did everything he said he was going to do and was a pleasure to do business with. The lawn looks great and with the sprinkler system fixed, it should stay looking great for years to come. I would hire Miguel again as well as recommend him to friends and family.

Phili and his brother are true pros. They quoted a fair price for my landscaping project, which included putting down pavers and replacing the lawn with artificial grass. The project took several days because of rain. However, each day they were here, they cleaned up the site before leaving. I am very happy with the results.

I meet with Brian today. My need is to convert a tub/shower to a shower only for my son who will be returning from a deployment. My project changed after contacting Insight and I sent a message to say I had additional needs. Quick response which is always helpful. Brian did show and showed on time. He gave me many options to keep the project price under control. I can purchase all materials or he can purchase for me. I like the options. He gave me an overview and took time to answer my questions. I am waiting his estimate currently. So many Contractors do not show or its not worth their time yet they do not let the customer know that is the situation. I feel Brian will respond with an estimate as promised. I am really most impressed with Brian and hope I have found a contractor that I can use long term future projects :).

Working with Microresorts was a true pleasure. We were extremely lucky to find Elder through an old real estate agent and we couldn’t have been happier. Microresorts built 2 decks, concrete walls, a firepit, a fence with gates, and beautiful planters and also put in 2 irrigation systems, a drainage system, many plants, and a gas line to our firepit and grill. He also installed our hot tub including electrical. He also threw in some extra items that we didn’t expect which we needed to get done at some point. Before we even signed a contract, Elder drew up plans and showed us his fantastic ideas for our outdoor space. He put a lot of work into the plans and it was clear that his vision matched ours. His workers were considerate to our neighbors. Elder met all of our immediate neighbors and game them his contact info. He told our neighbors to call him if there were any issues. When the workers showed up at 9:30am on a Saturday, one of the neighbors complained (even though this was much later than the 8am that the local ordinance allows). Elder had the workers come even later on Saturday to accommodate our neighbor. The work was professionally done and looks amazing. Everyone who sees our space is astonished at the design and finishing work. Although the work took a little longer than the original estimate due to rain, it was completed as quickly as possible. It was well managed and there were no significant delays or problems. Elder dealt with us with respect even though we did change our minds on a couple of details after work started. He didn’t increase the price when we made changes even though we knew it would be a little more expensive for him (and we were willing to pay more). The hardscape is solid and we are not worried about maintenance anytime soon. We wanted a low maintenance house and he gave that to us. Overall, I can definitely say that we are extremely happy with Elder Jerez and Microresorts. We would definitely hire them again if we had any more work to do. Choosing Elder and Microresorts was an excellent decision and we recommend him highly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
