I had a list of 20 things that I wanted done before the holidays and Kevin took care of all of it. He installed 2 shower heads hung mirrors in both baths, fixed my front door that was sticking and also the short I had in my garage door. He also installed new lights outside. He was on time and cleaned up everything when he finished. I will hire Kevin again. It was a great experience and It was such a relief to finally get all lthe projects out of the way.

We had Dave come over to fix a number of things in our old house. He arrived on time and was very friendly. He did a very nice job of replacing the threshold to our front door, and repairing our old garage door which was falling apart and sagging. He installed a new dishwasher, replaced the angle stop which was leaking, and installed a security light. His charges are very reasonable. On top of that he realigned our front door which was sticking and fixed our driveway gate without charging but we tipped him for that! We would definitely call him again for future work at the house.

Cruz is the best! I hired him to help me out with my "honey-do" list, and he made me look good. He fixed a pesky kitchen drawer, installed a baby gate, and even hung up some art for me. He was super fast, super friendly, and walked me through all the steps as he did them. I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again, he can do it all!

We found Salinas home remodeling services most helpful in several ways. Services done for us included electrical wiring, plumbing installation, wall and ceiling painting with texture applications. Also, bathtub, sink and appliance installation. All work was done at high standards. Note: we also experienced generous and positive attitudes from soft spoken professionals, and received on time service. Above all, we have memories of his installation process that are most rewarding. Thank You, Mr. Vyron Salinas and his helper Pablo. Yours truly, Nicholas Adkins

My wife and I would give them 6 stars if I could. Gustavo and his team did an awesome job building a new fence for us. It was a somewhat complex job involving two different architectural designs (one across the front of the property and one down the side) plus installing a new iron driveway gate. My wife and I watched in amazement as they worked carefully, taking the time to get everything just right. They did a really terrific job for us and we would recommend them highly. Please feel free to contact us as a reference anytime. Thanks so much to Gustavo and his great team.

Gerald came the same morning when I contact him. He gave me a pretty reasonable quote for power washing my garage & drive way & put the epoxy paint in the garage. My garage and driveway were totally de face from rebuilding from a fire. Gerald started the next day after our appointment . He came on time, help move my stuff & did his job efficiently . He was supposed to be able to finish the next day with the epoxy paint but I requested one more day for drying time. He was very flexible to accommodate my needs. My garage looks great and his team came back another time to move all my stuff back to the garage. I will definitely recommend Big league painting for efficiency, on time and reasonable pricing.

Richard helped me design and remodel some features of my home before selling. Richard has a great eye for design and is able to construct as well. Richard and his team poured a new (black) concrete driveway, built me a new lateral cedar stained fence and painted the exterior of my home navy blue. This lead to a quick sale above asking, Thanks!

We were thoroughly satisfied with the concrete work done by Kris Fredrickson, Anderson Construction’s concrete contractor. Our new driveway and sidewalk look great. Kris listened to us and did his best to accommodate our wishes, going above and beyond. We would definitely hire him again and recommend him to others. And Mike Anderson stayed in constant communication w/us making sure that we were satisfied with how the project was proceeding.

I have used Marco's services for many years. He and his crew have fully repainted both the exterior and interior of my home twice. His work is impeccable, completed on time, and always neat throughout the process. He has also repaired fences, installed gates, and refinished decks. If I request work that is beyond his capabilities, he is ready to refer me to others.

We wanted to replace 2 old fences with a new one along our driveway. Victor was able to come to our home in Alameda with a quote the same day I posted the job . He was very accommodating with regards to the trees and plant that we wanted to preserve. What a difference!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
