Introduction: Dear potential student: DISCLAIMER: I teach, tutor, and write, but do not do grant-writing or ghost-writing for academic courses. I also provide most of the materials FREE in printable electronic form. NOTE: Regarding COVID-19, my wife and I have completed the original 2 rounds of Pfizer vaccination plus the recent booster shot. Professional tutors with different styles can be equally effective; my style works for me and my students. My approach to tutoring starts with having the student treat each subject as part of - not apart from - life all around. It also looks into other obstacles to learning, like shyness, boredom, poor study habits, and weak lower-grade preparation. Then, we build from what is known. My qualifications for tutoring include K12 and JC California single-subject credentials for English, Mathematics, Social Sciences [Economics, History], and Computer Science; TEFL and TESOL certificates; experience teaching in all these subjects; and a real enjoyment of teaching. For young and adult ESL students, I use a lot of reading aloud from one of my fables or novels - narrative and dialogue - to let me assess needs like sight-reading, pronunciation, stress, and vocabulary, and to help the student reinforce language patterns both consciously and unconsciously. I enjoy seeing students move from fear to confidence, from seeing a class as punishment to enjoying it as part of life, and from seeing tests as goals to treating them as mature learning devices. When they contact me months or years later to tell of their success, it is most gratifying. Best wishes! Jon Cristofer Miller

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

In general, I charge $35/hour when I drive to nearby homes. However, when the student comes to our home or is face-to-face electronically via Skype or Zoom, the the rate is $25/hour. There may also be further discounts for long-recurring sessions.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

We spend a little time exchanging background information, concerns, and strategies. Then - for class-related tutoring - we look at a particular problem or assignment and work through it. For general tutoring, e.g., ESL, we start with the student reading material of mine. Based on listening, I can assess issues like accent, cadence, and pronunciation. What happens next varies with the student and the material.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I do not actively seek out the latest developments from outside sources. Of course, feedback and questions raised by students and colleagues point me to changes in education philosophy and objectives relevant to them.
