I hired Simply Drywall to insulate and drywall two walls and the ceiling in my garage. I also had them build a room in the garage (framing, doorway, and drywall). The estimate provided by Shane was reasonable and realistic. The work was completed on time and on budget. If I have another drywall project I will most likely hire Simply Drywall again.

Fantastic handyman! John was very professional and knowledgable of what needed to get done. I just needed to point him in the direction of the furniture to install and he went right to work. He did a fantastic job. I highly recommend J&L Handyman Service and look forward to working with him again.

I was nervous about someone drilling into my stone countertop to install an air switch for the garbage disposal, but Nick explained what the process would be, what tools he would use, and what other factors he would have to consider once he saw the actual space. He did a fabulous job- it looks great- and fixed a couple of other little things to boot. His price was more than reasonable, and he impressed me as being someone with integrity. I highly recommend him.

I had Matt, Dominique and crew paint my 1990’s Oak Kitchen cabinets and install hardware on the doors and drawers. Dominique was great to deal with. Very attentive and responsive. I live in the Bay Area and they happily made the trip to Silicon Valley from the Sacramento area where they are based. My kitchen has a whole new fresh look and I couldn’t be more pleased. I chose the gorgeous color Cotton Sheets by Kelly Moore which was crossed to Sherwin Williams since A Better Choice has contract pricing with Sherwin. They also painted a couple of bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with Fabulous results.

I highly recommend Economy Home Repair, which recently completed a job at our 1910s house in Berkeley including replacement of some rotten siding, installation of two new windows, and painting all on the 2nd floor of the house. We could not be happier with our experience. Signing up with Kris was a no-brainer: his team has stellar reviews, his bid for the job was more than fair, and he arrived on-time for meetings and responded promptly to emails. This was extremely hard work - not the most fun job - and I was particularly impressed that Carl and his team completed the job safely after just 5 consecutive days. Given my prior experience with contractors and jobs that can extend for weeks or longer, it is unusual to get that kind of attention. All the materials were high quality, and I cannot find a single flaw in Carl's workmanship. Overall had a very positive experience, and I'm particularly happy to have found a trustworthy contractor I can turn to for future work.

I needed a kitchen faucet installled. Julio was out to do the job a couple of hours later. He showed up on time, very friendly and professional from beginning to end. He did a great job installing the faucet, despite hard water that had essentially become like cement over time, he was very patient and skilled and no damage to the granite. Very happy with his quality of work. I asked if he had time to look at a dragging side gate door. He was happy to help, gave me a very reasonable quote and to my surprise had all the necessary equipment in his truck. He fixed the gate door perfectly, swings so smoothly now. Julio does an excellent job.

Shawn and his crew were amazing from start to finish. What should have been a simple job for them, painting the exterior that had new siding, turned into a series of complications and set backs caused by the contractor who installed the siding. During those five weeks Shawn was extremely understanding of my unfortunate situation with the building contractor and he was always willing to go the extra mile to ensure my home had no loose ends left behind by the person who installed my siding. His prices are extremely reasonable, even when we had to expand the scope of work to include extra work that the builder left undone. Shawn and his crew take pride in their work and take great care of their customers. Had they not been covered in paint when they completed the job I would have hugged them!

Jeff Scott did a great job on an outdoor tile project I recently had him complete. He was always professional and on time. He helped me figure out a plan for the tile I wanted to use as well as finding the materials needed to complete the project. Everything was completed quickly and under the timeframe he estimated. It looks great!

Keith is an excellent handyman who can do just about everything you need up to and including project management. He takes great pride in his work, is always on time, and he is trustworthy. I had him do pretty much everything to get our rental ready for the market. Plumbing, tiling a bathroom, dry rot repair work, you name it he can do it! He went above and beyond and even helped me coordinate with granite installers while we were out of town. I would not hesitate to hire him again for any project and I recommend him heartily.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
