Bryan did a great job for our family portrait and I would recommend him, without hesitation. We made a last minute decision to do a family portrait about a week before we were all together and he managed to find a time to accomodate us and at the location we wanted. Less than 2 minutes after I e-mailed to inquire if he was available, he called, plus did a follow-up reminder a day before and arrived at the location early. Beyond his great organization, the pictures are exactly what we wanted. We had 3 couples and a dog in an outdoor setting and they turned out just stunning! Everyone was very happy with his work and the final result. Plus, he was a pleasure to work with. I used reviews like this one to find Pixil Studios so I hope this is helpful to anyone else looking for organized, quality work.

We had a great experience with Kevin and are very happy with our pictures. It is solid delivery for a very reasonable price. I specifically wanted family pictures with our dog - who never seems to sit still - and Kevin did a fantastic job integrating her into our family picture, getting the dogs attending and collection some action shots as well as family portrait stills. We chose an outdoor setting and took a little hike together - Kevin was up for our suggestions and added his own ideas as well. Just in general an all-around good experience. Thank you!

I would highly recommend Lilya of Aquarelle Imagery. I hired her to come to my parent's house over the holidays to take family portraits. Lilya even adjusted her schedule so that she could come on Christmas Eve after i found out that some of our family members wouldn't be there until that time. She was able to create great photos in less than ideal lighting situations. She also was extremely patient while we organized ourselves and had multiple dogs running around and interrupting photos. I would definitely use her again and highly recommend her.

A++++ My home (Bet Kelev - The House of Dog) is done in K9 Judaic and it has been featured in the Rocky Mtn News when it was around. At one time Bet Kelev was to be featured on HGTV - but the series was cancelled. I treasure the oil paintings of my dogs past and present and have a major portrait of each generation gracing the living room wall. I have, in the past, spared little expense on these portraits - hiring 'big name' hotsy totsy well well known photographers. Now please don't get me wrong, I am not unhappy with the portrait of Moolah, Buddy, Ricki and Nicki nor the one of Moses, Elle and Max. But... The portrait just done by Sarah DeGroot is terrific - in a different league. Capturing black standard poodles is no small feat - and the portrait was done in the living room - not a studio unlike the others - and quite frankly far far superior - and far far less costly. (She should raise her rates!) Also note a close friend who represented nationally the Pentax account (when it was Number 1 in the US) who knows photography - was very impressed as doing black dogs 'is very very difficult.' He explained why technically but I still have no idea - other than this is the best portrait of my dogs - period. Photographing black dogs let alone my Sinai Standard poodles (Reb Simcha & Her Ladyship Goodie)is difficult - just think how well Sara would do with even easier subjects and less demanding guardians than this Man of Dog for family portraits Would I hire Sara again? Marvin is TRULY MARVELOUS!! He is extremely professional and talented! He has a VERY creative mind, taking portrait pics that have a real impact. He even managed to make me look pretty good so he MUST be talented. No other time have I taken a picture and wondered.... "Is that really me?? That person in the picture looks wonderful." Undoubtedly, this photographer is amazing. It's as if she read my mind on what I was looking for in the way of setting, action shots, expressions and blending the right mix of personalities into one fantastic family photo! Even with the littlest one and the teenager, the expressions are priceless. If I ever need to expand my family photo wall, I will know who to contact!!

My family and I had the wonderful pleasure of having our family photos done by the Wilderness Collective. My son, who is a 1-year old, and pregnant wife had our pictures done at Washington Park in Denver, CO. Having a one year old and a pregnant woman, I can see how it can be difficult to get good quality pictures. They were wonderful through the whole process; they made the whole experience very fun! I give props to all the work they've done to make the day an exciting time for me and my family! The pictures came out great and we received our photos very timely, as it was near my son's first birthday. Glad to have our pictures done with the Wilderness Collective!

Mary came to our home for family portraits and was great! She was very creative with posing, use of light, and candid shots. She accomodated us during a busy time of year and gave us some awesome pictures - first time we've done professional portraits for a holiday card. Her rates were extremely competitive and included editing and digital rights. We'll definitely be calling her again!

No complaints, only positives. Excellent photographer, great person to be around. Frances did our family session in Aurora. She wrangled our crazy family and even got the cutest pics of Frodo, our little poodle being all lost in the world :) Love our photos, can't wait for our Christmas session!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
