Right Equation

Introduction: I am a mother of two children, one in college and one in high school, so I recognize the need that some families have for someone else to come alongside and provide some extra support. Perhaps the most important quality of an outstanding teacher and tutor is his or her ability to be an encourager. Kids need constant, positive reinforcement to help them realize that they can be successful. As a Secondary Math teacher, I have noticed that many kids have a tremendous fear of Math. I like to try to take that fear and turn it into success. One of the first things I work to establish is a trusting environment where kids feel safe enough to make mistakes. When that is established, they can finally open themselves up to learning. In order to take steps forward in Math, you are inevitably going to take a few steps backward as you learn new concepts and make mistakes. But if those mistakes can be seen as learning experiences instead of hits on their self-esteem, then progress is sure to follow.
