Hired on Thumbtack

I contracted Pipe X to do my work, which was put in at Thumbtack. Their bid came in at a competitive price, though they were not the cheapest. Actually, they were the most expensive. I chose them because I trusted the person who came to my house. That was probably my first mistake. Not having EVERYTHING that was discussed between he and I included in the contract was my biggest mistake. There are “Statements from Pipe X” which are what I was told would happen. I have pictures that to display almost everything that follows and tell a VERY different story. If I can find a way to get them posted here, I will include them. Statement from Pipe X - ETA to complete the project – 1 day Actual time to complete, 3 days (barely they left my home at 8 PM) There’s an obvious bump in the concrete approximately 2 feet outside my front door. If you take one step out, you’ll land on the bump. If you walk from one side of my front door to the other, approximately 2 feet away from my front door, you’ll notice the bump. It’s that obvious! I have a picture of my level placed on the bump. The bubble in the level is to the far right. More importantly, you can see a shadow underneath the level - the concrete is obviously not flat. Right outside the front door of my nearly 400K home. Statement from Pipe X - We will clean up after we’re done and leave the area in the same shape it was before we arrived. Actual - There are 23 gashes on the walls in the walkway to my front door. I had my home painted two years ago so the gashes in the wood stand out. I was told that its normal when you jack hammer concrete. Statement from Pipe X - We will add the divider between the house and the concrete. I’ll have to have my guys pick some up but we’ll get it in. Actual - Not done. The statement from the team doing the work - it's not needed. They told me they we're actually doing me a favor, that water will get in and seep underneath and cause more problems. [Water get in under a hooded porch - seriously?!?] Statement from Pipe X - We will pour 6 – 8 inches of concrete. Actual - I noticed the depth BEFORE they poured the concrete and measured it myself. In some places it was five inches, but in most it was closer to four, including where I measured it. I contacted the person who I signed the contract with and he told me it needs to be 6 - 8 inches deep. The team there pounded down the concrete where I measured (with a 2X4) and started pouring concrete before I could measure again. Statement from Pipe X – We will rebar all four sides of the concrete. My guys are worried about drilling into the basement so I told them to only drill in about 4 inches. We will do all four sides. The contract states that rebar will be done. Actual – Rebar was only done on two sides. I noticed this AFTER the team had started pouring the concrete but before they got past the halfway point. I was told by the person leveling the concrete that he did not do all four sides because he didn't want to drill into the basement. [But he drilled into the concrete that was directly underneath my front door, which sits right above my basement]. You decide if Pipe X is right for you.
Pipe X's reply
What this customer left out is that the job was bid for 8 to 9' in depth and actually turned out to be 11 to 12' deep all by hand, never once did we up out price even after the scope of the work changed. We at pipe X strive to provide excellent customer service but sometimes you just can't make some people happy. I hope that you can look past this review and give us a try on your next plumbing repair.
