Introduction: We offer high quality, custom landscaping design, installation and maintenance services in and near Denver. We believe in treating the Earth, our customers and each other with respect at all times. For this reason, we employ organic gardening practices. Our results have been beautiful, one of a kind gardens with inviting spaces that offer functional harvest and utility based on each client's wishes, lifestyle and property. We specialize in water wise design, selecting plants that require less water as they establish themselves. We offer irrigation, hardscape and outdoor design services. We are constantly training and are very happy to be offering rock art side by side with our plant art. Aspects of a project, such as cement work for a backyard patio, which are beyond our professional skill set, are subcontracted to trusted, licensed companies with the appropriate skills and experience.

Everything about the process was so easy! I found Great Fortune Design on Thumbtack and sent them my project. Mary Pat very promptly replied, explaining the process and prices. I needed a TON of weeding work done. With a newborn and an my four year old, I couldn’t get out to mitigate the weeds early enough in the season and they were out of control. Mary Pat’s crew members were prompt and hard working. It took 30 hours but the large space of perennials and wild flowers as never looked better! Invoices and payment is also super easy! So glad we signed up for their summer maintenance package for the rest of the season!

Outdoor Landscaping and Design

Work was done efficiently with adequate crew. Removed old weed barrier cloth, put down new weed barrier and replenished rock.

I am very happy with the work Sam did in my garden. It looks great. She also provided suggestions for a future project. Also, the communication with the owner Mary Pat was terrific. Great Fortune Design will be a terrific partner with my garden upkeep. They are flexible and adjusted the plan according to my goals for this project.

Outdoor Landscaping and Design

Mary Pat and her team provided a very positive experience for our front yard landscape project. We were removing our lawn and going to complete xeriscape. My initial meeting to discuss the project with Mary Pat was great. Why this isnt a 5 star review is Mary Pat handed off the project to another person prior to the start who I didn't get a chance to meet with to provide the same level of detail I had provided to her; therefore, some things were lost in translation. I was also expecting a bit more interaction/discussion over material choices and cost. That aside, the team was friendly, worked quickly and now our yard looks great. I would recommend using them, as overall I am happy with the result.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

We charge $50 an hour for generalized garden labor in Denver and $55 or more in outlying areas. We charge $105 an hour for specialized landscaping labor such as irrigation work in Denver, with availability and pricing to be quoted by project for areas outside Denver. Clients who commit to a season long maintenance package receive a 10% labor discount.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I was trained by several different high altitude master gardeners in Telluride, Ridgway and Norwood, Colorado. I tended CSU’s High and Dry research garden, noting which plants not only survived with no supplemental watering, but thrived in these conditions. Our landscaping manager and myself have been attending professional trainings facilitated by CPS Distributors. Topics have included water feature design, irrigation basics and drainage solutions. The trainings have been great, we are very appreciative to have CPS as an educational resource.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I started out working with children in the social services/mental health world. After four years, I adopted my daughter who I had met in my work, and set down my professional role within the mental health field. I became a full time ski instructor, which means I had well paying, inspiring, fun work for four months a year. I needed a complementary summer season profession. My time teaching skiing and working for a wilderness therapy program had shown me I thrived in outdoor work, not indoor offices. My first summer as a mother, I also became a gardener. I discovered that the plants were much like the kids...they needed space, nutrition, sunlight, water and guidance. They would show me what they needed if I listened. Tending the plants tended me and I started seeking out mentors, researching naturoscape design techniques and volunteering on organic farms. As I gained skills, I took on comparable projects. In 2017, I moved to Denver to be with my husband and established Great Fortune Design. We have continued to match our rate of growth and project scale with our rate of acquired skills and training capabilities.
