I have been trying to find a sewer gas leak for FOUR years and have paid SIX plumbers and untold amounts of money for NOTHING. Evans Rooter Service came into my life through Thumbtack, and cared enough about me and my problem to discover and fix the problem. I would WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend Alex and Jeremiah to anyone looking for a plumber. Fast, efficient, and caring. I am having them come back next week to fix another plumbing situation. --A very satisfied Fort Collins customer

I needed to have a pipe repair inspected and an outside water bib repaired. I asked Jason to replace the pipe that was repaired, but he told me there was no need to replace the pipe. I appreciate his honesty because replacing the pipe as requested would have doubled the amount I paid for the water bib repair. Jason was always prompt and courteous with his communication. I will definitely be doing business with Jason in the future.

They were quick to respond to my request and reasonably priced. I had some plumbing problems at a rental unit that Brian got right on, then I added 3 more items to his list and he hung in there and did a great job getting them all done very professionally! Would definitely hire them again.

Josiah, owner of Papa’s Home Improvement is professional, personable and knowledgeable. He & asst Pablo arrived as scheduled each day and after we discussed projects went right to work. Josiah did several plumbing repairs/upgrades including fixing a leak someone else couldn’t despite several attempts. They painted interior doors & frames - cleaned & prepped surfaces properly and applied paint cleanly. Required 2nd coat although white on white. They did numerous handyman tasks including some outdoors. Josiah made suggestions that benefited projects. Josiah & Pablo are honest & trustworthy – important when bringing strangers in your home. They are friendly and VERY hard workers who go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. They did extra work without charge to make sure I was happy. I recommend Papa’s Home Improvement for a broad range of tasks and projects.

4/1/2018: Quoted $149 to fix drainage issue. Assured that Acension had the capability and tools to solve my issue. 4/11/2018: Charged $589. Assured the issue was resolved 5/23/2018: Drain is still not still not working. I have concluded I have been scammed. Do not hire this contractor! He will take the money and run without solving your problem. Worst experience I have ever had with a contractor. DO NOT BELIEVE YOUR INITIAL ESTIMATE. Horrible customer service.

Daniel and his team helped my wife and I transform a house built in 1906 into a modern masterpiece. They did an UNBELIEVABLE job at a very reasonable price. At first, I was a little hesitant to use them as one reviewer perviously gave them a wretched review, but I couldnt be happier with the end-results. They completely remodeled the basement, added 2 bathrooms, re-did another bathroom, dry walled multiple rooms, built an amazing egress window well, installed a water heater, sewer ejector pump, kitchenette, and laid tile/ flooring throughout the house. Separately, on a personal level Daniel and his crew are some of the nicest individuals you'll ever meet. IF YOU ARE EVER ON THE FENCE ABOUT USING DANIEL AND HIS CREW DONT BE....FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME AT ANY TIME AND ID BE HAPPY TO SHOW OFF HIS WORK. This certainly wont be the last time we use him. I had an issue with a leak on my water main. Philip came out and explained what it would take to repair the leak. He explained that my old gate valve was failing and my pressure on my water system was in excess of the required pressure. After providing me with options and a price to repair my water main, he started the work and had it finished in a short amount of time. He walked me through and all of the work he preformed and made sure I understood how it worked. The work area was cleaner than when he started. I was extremely happy with the professionalism and knowledge Philip provided. Liquid Innovations is now the company I trust to handle all of my plumbing needs.

We hired Gil to do a variety of handyman services (flooring repair, shower door and appliance installation, updating fixtures, blinds installation, etc.) and he did a great job with everything that we were looking for. He also was very accommodating and flexible with his time which made it easier on us to schedule during our time off. We will definitely reach out to Gil in the future if/when we have additional projects to complete.

Tyler and his partner arrived on time, were very professional, and were even prepared to install a new garbage disposal, upon my request, without attempting to overcharge me - and I did my research ;-). I was most impressed by the fact that, when I accidentally miscalculated the total charge and wrote out a check for $100 more than the amount I should've paid, Tyler actually showed up at my front door to return my check and alert me that I overpaid by $100. I NEVER would've realized I'd done that had he not been so honest. Although it's rare that I pay for any maintenance services, as I prefer to do most myself and am typically skeptical of the professionals who like to take advantage of those who are unable to perform these tasks themselves, this was a circumstance in which I had no choice but to put my faith in a professional and hope that I would not be 'scammed.' Tyler has renewed my faith in the small-businessman and I highly recommend him to anyone, especially if you are hesitant in hiring outside help!

Andujo showed up on time and had a very fair quote. The project was actually less complicated (and therefor cheaper) than I anticipated. I hired him on the spot and he completed the fence repair immediately. I would hire him again for a fence repair.

I highly recommend SCB Handy Man Services. I recently had multiple tasks around our home to be done but could not find a "single" company to provide multiple tasks. My husband and I both work, two kids in sports and just didn't have time to get to what we needed and wanted to do to our home. We hired SCB to clean gutters, patch and paint some walls, gut and re-do our bathroom, fix a leaking sink and running toilette in another bathroom, replace our garbage disposal, and replace a light fixture. There was some other odd and things that SCB discovered and repaired along the way! I also learned that SCB provides complete remodels and other fix-it stuff. SCB was on-time, available, professional, easy on the wallet and can do just about anything!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
