Francisco cleaned our gutters on a Saturday morning at 9AM. He arrived early and got straight to work and finished in a little over an hour. He noticed that one of our windows was not sealed properly which was very helpful!! Great service.

Super responsive. Set up a trampoline for us on Christmas Eve when it was freezing out. We only had a small window while the kids were gone and he and couple guys knocked it down. Great work. Great communication.

Very happy with his service on our 2 windows that had broken mechanisms. No bait and switch. The cost was exactly what he guessed it would be without seeing the issue first. He is very kind and honest. He was able to fix the problem right then and there with supplies in his work truck. He called when he thought he might be late but well within the window of time he gave me. I Would recommend his company to anyone.

We hired Daniel to remove some windows and install French doors in their place. This did not seem like an easy job with the fact our home was built in 1893 and he was basically cutting a hole in the side of the house. Gonzales construction made it look easy! His team worked with skill and efficiency and did the job without issue. They also installed a redwood deck to bring us through the doors and onto a newly constructed stone patio. The result was worthy of 5 stars! Thanks Daniel!

These guys were amazing! The estimate was fair, they got started right away and finished painting my house in two days. The attention to detail was impressive...down to the last paintstroke..nothing missed. Also they color matched the color of my new metal windows exactly when painting my older windows. I couldn't believe how good it looked. I'm happy to have a clean fresh look to my house and to gave worked with such courteous professionals. Definitely recommend Stars painting.

Last year, upon purchasing a new house, we found that many of the windows were in bad shape. They were old, warped, and leaking. Being a first-time homeowner, I blundered around until I found Thumbtack, and HRTI offered to help almost immediately. The service I received from HRTI in purchasing new windows and having them installed was quick, professionally done, and reasonably priced to the point that, when we decided to get the rest of the bad windows replaced this year, there wasn't even a question of with whom we'd be working. Our experience with HRTI the second time was just as good as the first, and we are thrilled with the quality of the service. I could not recommend HRTI more highly.

Trent is a straight shooter motivated by integrity. I had requested drywall repair for a 1.5' x 1.5' hole in the wall. When he gave me his estimate he thought it was for a 1.5"x1.5" hole. The job took a little over two hours instead of the quoted one, but Trent refused to let me pay him for the extra time or the materials he had to purchase because of the larger hole. He was extremely professional asking permission to use my sinks and let me know that his saw was going to be loud. He also cleaned up after himself and the work is top notch. I will look to hire Trent again for my future projects.

I had the pleasure of using Prestige Windows for our new windows and doors in our home! They went above and beyond what a typical window company would do! Our windows arrived and were installed in a very short time frame around around 2 1/2 to 3 weeks! The installers were clean and nice and did an excellent job! They also corresponded with me during the entire time of shipping letting me know updates! I love the the quality of these windows and doors! I would highly recommend them to anyone putting Windows or doors in!

So John did a lot of work for us. His craftsmanship is very good. The only thing I wasn't happy with was the actual install of our windows, but his workers did that. One window was damaged going in and when I asked the worker about it, he was defensive and combative. After the windows were installed however, I only worked with John. He did all of the casing around the windows which turned out beautiful. He remodeled our master bath and half bath with marble tile and also did a beautiful job. His tile work is very good. He really pays attention to detail. He cut and installed our baseboard. He installed new plumbing, bathroom cabinets, mirrors, he installed outdoor lighting, he really did a ton of work. I was very happy with all of the work he did. Any problems that may have come up, he addressed immediately. I can't say enough nice things about John.

My job was small - a few screens that the HOA objected to, plus re-seating some windows. Chris took care of my screens right away, showing understanding for my plight and then took care of my windows. He wasn't above this little job! He treated me with dignity. Chris was professional, courteous, knowledgeable and kept in touch from point of contact through job completion. I would gladly recommend Universal Windows Direct to anyone, big job or small! N. Conservation Construction is an amazing company! They take care of their employees (from what I am told by an employee) and they did an amazing job on our windows. They have now done my Condo, House and both of my parents houses and one of my brothers houses. They are very clear and upfront about what they sell and the cost. The windows in the Condo are now 5 years old and still doing great. My tenants say it blocks out all highway noise. The windows in my house, which were installed in January are also doing their job! My electric bill has gone down, people actually compliment me on our windows, and it blocks about 95% of all the noise from outside. It is a dramatic improvement from what we did have. My family has been working with them for over 10 years now and we will not use anyone else. We got a quote from Lowes, Home Depot and Anderson Windows before going with Conservation Construction, on each of our homes to always compare before we buy, and they have always outbid their competitors and I think overall build a better window. The crew that came in and installed them were extremely nice and they cleaned up everything. I could not have asked for better!

Mike was amazing! I continued to toss curve balls at him, he quickly adjusted and made it happen at well below what I thought I would end up paying. HIGH quality work, quick to respond/schedule/complete and he needed no hand holding what so ever; I couldn't have asked for more. I simply wish he did more than siding and windows because I would gladly hire him again!

For some context this was a fairly large commercial project with 40 plus installed windows. That said, Blake and Robert were excellent with communication and responsiveness to updates with the project. The communication and willingness of customer service sets this team apart. I look forward to future projects with this team. I recommend Z Double B with any project ranging with the small to the large. Kevin

Although the first installer never showed up, the following day a new crew arrived and did amazing work! When they finished they cleaned everything, hauled all the old windows away and managed to do it all in one day. My windows look so good!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
