I have used Fernando and Design Heroes several times, and we will continue to due so. I found Fernando using Thumbtack. Fernando called me almost immediately after I posted, which I appreciated. He laid out a website for us which crossed over mobile/tab/desktop platforms, helped us set up email, and talked me through the process in easy to understand terms. He gave us a website and online presence we were proud of. We continued to use Fernando as we grew, and he was always reliable and professional. Most recently, we used Fernando to help us prepare for the Colorado Garden and Home Show. Fernando completely rebuilt our website, designed and printed new flyers, brochures, and business cars, as well as the graphics for our booth display. Fernando really helped to set us apart, not only from our competitors, but from everyone at the show. Our booth, literature, and website, captured almost double what we were projecting to get from the show, and we continue to get more. We really owe a lot of this to the work Fernando put into all of this for us. Having really interesting and professional literature, and a website that's not generic, but informative and gets attention, reflects well on my company. This makes it easier to educate, sell, and retain my customers. I recommend Fernando to anyone looking for graphic and website design, and I will continue to use Fernando for whatever our company needs. His work speaks for itself, and he is very good at explaining the entire process clearly, and in terms that I could understand, so I knew exactly what to expect. Big thanks to Fernando for everything he's done!!

Lisa did an absolutely fantastic job for us for our two companies. We needed print media as well as web-based graphics for our two very different companies, and she provided both with highly professional skill. She is very responsive to our needs and listens very well to both what we know we want, and what we think we may want as well. In fact, she presented several options for a particularly vague concept that we presented to her, and she intuited the project with very little direction. We have ended up choosing one of her proposals over our original concept many times. She also pays close attention to our budget constraints and is very accurate when it comes to bids on other projects we offer to her. Her design acumen is modern, appealing, and she is very accommodating to what we believe our own customers would respond well to. Her attention to detail is sharp and thorough. Also, she is a pleasure to work with! We recommend her to all of our business partners!

Handling website design and development, iCbizz has a team of web design specialists. We're friendly people with lots of experience. We also handle custom website design. iCbizz provides a thorough, proven web design process that delivers functional and effective websites. We begin by listening, making sure that we understand the challenges and opportunities. Perhaps more than anything else, iCbizz is known for a structured web design process, which includes the following: * Discover First, we capture all the project requirements, from the goals and key audiences to the features and the brand attributes. Next, we research what key phrases potential visitors are searching for in search engines, and then we align these phrases with pages on the sitemap. Now things get more visual. Wireframe layouts of each page are created, showing the placement of main elements. All of this is done with search engine optimization, visitors, and future updates in mind. * Design Once the discovery phase is complete, the next step is to plan the look and feel. The iCbizz creative team designs mood boards and presents color palettes, typefaces and image styles, always with brand image in mind. With the wireframes and mood boards approved, the actual visual designs begin to fall into place. Note how the creative process is a series of steps that build on one another, arriving at a final design through a rational, structured approach. * Develop Approved designs go from layered Photoshop files to browser-tested HTML and style sheets through a process developers called slice and dice. Next comes the database work. Mighty-Site, the iCbizz content management system, is set up and all custom programming features are developed and tested. Pages are created; content is added and formatted; and everything is clickable and working like an actual website. * Deploy These first three phases often take several months. This last phase, deployment, only takes a few days. Orbit completes a 22-point pre-launch checklist that ensures that everything is fully tested. The site is presented for client review and approval. Everything look good? Great! The DNS information is updated and the button is pushed. The site goes live.

If you'd like to find a professional graphic designer with lots of industry experience, then I'm the man for you. I can design everything you need, from logos to multi-page publications. I previously managed a small design firm, Lightbox Graphics, where we designed print and developed websites. Some of the clients I've done print work for are the University of Colorado, Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Currently, I am looking to do more print projects. I just finished a contract job for a large company, IHS, designing a 130-page publication for the oil and gas industry. I've been teaching graphic design for colleges, like the Art Institute of Colorado for over 15 years. Currently, I'm teaching at Red Rocks Community College. The link above is for a website I recently developed for an electronics recycling company here in Denver. Everything that you'll see, I designed. I'd be happy to show you a portfolio upon request.

My name is Matt Milner and I want to design your next website. It's simply not enough anymore for a site to just relay information. It needs to be innovative, responsive across multiple devices, and visually appealing as well. I get that. I have learned the importance of creating both a tasteful aesthetic and a user-friendly experience. I also understand that my clients aren't coders. That's why I empower my clients to take active ownership of their websites by using the world's best content management systems, like WordPress and Drupal. I am constantly researching innovations/trends in web design and utilize the latest techniques involving HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery, and PHP. As a web and graphic designer, it is my intention to provide my clients with the creative, professional, and timely service that they deserve. I can create custom, beautifully designed websites, graphics, and branding for mostly any project that you require; all while maintaining an intense focus on the user-centered experience. There is no project too big or too small.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

What should you look for in a website designer?

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. When you’re looking to hire a web designer, start by reviewing the person’s portfolio. Look for samples of work that match what you envision for your website, including experience building the types of pages or features you want. Make sure the web designer is familiar with your industry and understands both industry trends and web design trends — an old-fashioned or out-of-touch site will turn customers away rather than intrigue them.

Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

  • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
  • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
  • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour

How do you hire a web designer?

You’ve determined that the best way to create a professional, modern, mobile-friendly new website is to hire a professional web designer to build it. To hire the best person for the job — and to get the web design that best fits your company’s identity — it’s important to ask a few key questions:

  • What’s the scope of the work? Will the website be basic with just a few pages about your company, its services, and contact information? Or will it also have an e-commerce section for online shopping, a blog, or content for visitors to download? Before you hire a web designer, make sure you have a thorough, specific list of the components you must have the designer include in the web design.
  • What do you want your website to look like? Consider websites that are similar to the one you’d like to build, ideally in the same industry or serving similar types of customers. Build a set of examples of types of pages, design aspects, and website features that you can hand off to the web designer — the person you hire should have experience creating websites with the features you want. If they don’t have the right skill set, they’re not the right pro for you.
  • What’s the web designer’s start-to-finish process? What will the final deliverable be? Before you hire someone, make sure their availability works with your timeline and that their process meets your expectations. Most important is finding a web designer who will work collaboratively with you to create a successful online presence.

What do you look for in a web design company?

The web design company you choose must be able to interpret your company’s mission and identity and turn it into an appealing website that connects with potential customers. They must help you reach your target audience and meet your business goals. A web design agency should have on staff both talented web designers, with fresh ideas and extensive technical and creative skills, and a marketing team that knows how to drive traffic to your site, encourage visitor engagement, and convert visitors into customers. Web designers should be able to build in search optimization and integrate your site with a content management system and e-commerce tools. Look, too, for a website design company that understands responsive design and can optimize your website for mobile devices and desktop browsers. The right web design company understand current design and website trends, has experience building sites in a variety of industries (not just yours), and has an expansive portfolio of live websites. Finally, don’t simply hire the cheapest bidder — in web design, as in all things, you get what you pay for.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
