FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I have various pricing systems, based on the nature of the work. With some projects, all the necessary work is visible. With many projects, there may be hidden conditions that won't be immediately visible and known.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My typical approach to working with a new client is to listen carefully as they describe their problems. I usually will ask an open-ended question, such as, "What are you trying to achieve with my talents?", or "What do you think is the best solution for you?". After the client gives me an answer, I may then say, "Let me make sure I understand you", then repeat what they just said. I think this approach insures good communication.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I network with others in my field, read pertinent trade periodicals and watch TV shows such as This Old House. I have also been educated as a Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) and a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The CGR designation taught me business skills such as estimating, scheduling, customer service, etc. The CAPS designation taught me how to remodel for people with disabilities.
