J & G did an excellent job redoing our front and side area with rock. They also planted some yucca plants that do not need a lot of water. I would highly recommend this landscaping company!

I just can't say enough positive things about our experience. We called many contractors before we got in touch with them, most didn't return our calls and some just skipped appointments. Not these guys. They were very responsive right from the beginning. They got us right on their calendar, showed up early, and worked quickly and efficiently. Plus our fence looks beautiful!great work and reasonable price, we are actually going to talk to them about doing some other projects for us because we were so pleased.

The guys did a great job! We felt very taken care of despite the job being just a small bathroom remodel. They even assisted with getting our granite counter tops picked up and fabricated to accelerate the project schedule. Our facilities were down a matter of days, not weeks like the other contractors I interviewed had projected. Highly recommended!

Kitchen & two bathroom backsplashes and bathroom tub surround were done. I was in a time crunch and Steve's was able to get a two-person crew on the job the next day. After the job I discovered several areas of missing grout, but the contractor came back the next day after I called and fixed them. The clean up could have been better, as I spent a lot of my time doing that. Overall, a good experience.

Our entire experience from beginning to end was exceptional. Everyone we interacted with was efficient, kind, and thorough. The work was far above what I was hoping for, and incredibly reasonable. If you don't use this company for your landscaping needs, you are making a huge mistake.

Wed Aug 16, 8:18 PM If you’re contemplating hiring a good General Contractor, Daniel Gonzalez and his construction teams are your guys! We hired Daniel to finish 1,300 square feet including an extra bedroom, laundry area, storage room and quilt studio in our basement. Daniel gave a fair quote and he brought top notch teams and hard working guys to the project! His electrician did an excellent job installing all new electrical; and his HVAC guy ran new heat ducts and installed a whole house humidifier. The plumber ran new plumbing for a utility sink and washing machine. The framer did a fabulous job independently building our design to our exact specifications and even added decorative arches. The drywall guys hauled in heavy drywall sheets one-by-one because it wouldn’t fit into our window wells. The drywall installers got 4 rooms put up in one and ½ days! The tapers and texture's did an excellent job taping drywall seams and adding texture in less than two days for each team. Daniel’s crews showed up on time, they were respectful, trustworthy, and we appreciated how hard they all worked to get the job done in a timely manner. Daniel and his trim and paint team did an excellent job painting, installing our flooring, trim, doors, hardware and window ledges. Best of all, Daniel is an honest guy and does what he agrees to do. Treat these guys right and they’ll treat you right! Great job! We love our new space! Thanks Daniel!

Joey was great! I've tried many landscaping companies but this experience was a breath of fresh air. Joey was very professional and delivered on his promises. I really appreciated the communication throughout the job. His attention to detail was impressive and he went the extra mile to make sure we were happy with the end result. I will continue to use Hernandez Enterprises for all our landscaping needs and am happy to recommend him to my family and friends.

Omni Sprinkler Service and Landscaping completed an extensive landscaping project which included sprinkler installation, concrete sidewalk and patio construction, sod installation, and hardscape work. In putting together the estimate, David Cohen listened carefully to my needs and developed a plan to meet my budget and requirements. He provided a drawing of the finished landscape and a detailed quote with the scope work to be done and materials proposed. When the work began, the Omni crew showed up on time, worked full days, and did a great job cleaning up at the end of the project. They answered all my questions during the project and explained what they were doing and why. Since the work was completed at the end of the season, they extended the sod warranty and included the spring sprinkler system start up with the job. The yard looks great and will serve us well for years to come.

Steve pulled over 18-20 bushes, including a chainlink fence that was intertwined. He chipped, used for mulch, and hauled away ALOT of huge roots. He also took the remaining chainlink fence and put it along the side of the house to contain the dogs.

Sean was a great choice for our unexpected repair need that came mid-project in a bathroom remodel; he completed the project ahead of when we needed it done, and although our contractor was supposed to be there to detail the specifications, the contractor didn't show and Sean accomplished the job via verbal phone call with contractor, and it came out great. He also did some additional repair work we needed at a very nominal cost; clean and efficient workplace also. Would definitely use him again.

Dena, Mel and crew are the most delightful, responsive and polite team to work with ever! They get it and will respectively listen to your ideas and connect with you no matter the budget. We had them do our entire landscaping front and back which included hardscape, a pergola, pavers, sod, berms, a water feature, flowers, and numerous trees. Albeit it a lot of work but a small yard, they over-the-top amazed us with their design ideas and customer service. Our yards are GORGEOUS! We will also be using them in the future for all our maintenance needs.

We had a sidewalk pored from the front to our back yard and added a step around the back patio. After talking with Alan I discovered he also does landscaping. We are required by our HOA to have the landscaping for the back yard done within 90 days of the closing date. He and his crew planted the bushes and trees that we had purchased. They installed irrigation system, laid sod, hauled in and place decorative rock. They also installed raised garden beds and placed pavers around them. This was a challenge due to the slope of our yard. We found Alan and his crew to be professional, courteous, friendly and easy to communicate with. He also came back two weeks later and rolled the sod even the sod in our front yard which the HOA had installed and not rolled. We would not hesitate to use him again.

Cannot say enough great things about Scott and his colleague! They were professional, had great ideas and actually cleaned up the mess created from their work! We are in the process of finishing our basement (hence wanting to cut the window wells) and our general contractor was so impressed with Scott that he asked for his information to use him in the future. This is probably way more of a testament to his workmanship than my layperson’s opinion. :)

Salas Masonry just finished a brick repair/replacement job on the front of our house. We bricked in one of our garage doors that was no longer a usable stall and needed a sag repaired over the double garage door. Sly responded very quickly, was very patient with us as we had him come back a couple more times to talk to him about the job during our choosing a contractor phase. He was very knowledgeable about what needed to be done. Sly came through with a very good bid and time line. They did an awesome job! This company goes above and beyond to make sure the job is done right and the customer is happy. Every thing that was promised from time line to quality of work was met. WE had high expectations,( I mean this is the front of our home) and they not only met them, they blew us away... I have nothing but good to say about this company. I highly recommend them for any concrete or masonry. If ever needed again, Salas Masonry will be my only choice!

David provided one of the easiest and most satisfactory experiences I've ever had with a contractor. David is a nice, easy-going guy who was responsive to my need to have a deck replaced before tenants were to move in soon. His price was completely fair, he was easy with which to communicate, and he followed through on everything he promised. The deck he build for us was of high quality and he and his team got it done in 1 day. I will most definitely be calling Sawdust & Stone Builders for my future project needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
