Michael and his coworker Chris did a great job installing a carport in my driveway. They finished the entire project within a week of first contacting them. The project took a little longer than anticipated and Michael even put in a couple hours of free work to make up for the difference between his quote and the final price. If you're looking for honest, quality work, this is your guy.

Anthony did a wonderful job. My yard is now ready for the winter months. Not only did he remove the over grown weeds out of my flowerbeds, he also removed the self starter trees. Even though I hadn't ask him to, he also remove the twigs out of my driveway. My husband and I really appreciate the great job that Anthony did.

Ray did some pretty extensive fence repair for me and did a wonderful job. His pricing was extremely fair. Especially when compared to replacing the damaged fences. He also removed my side yard (Sod, tree stump, sprinklers etc.) and poured an extension to my driveway. During the pouring of the drive, he set fence posts and came back a few days after the concrete was done to build a custom fence that allows me to keep my boat at home instead of storage. His price for the drive and fence together was nearly $2,000 less than the other bids I had recieved. He is a meticulous carpenter, very likable and I will absolutely have him do more projects at my home! Bad weather caused him to need more time to complete the projects than he first anticipated but that was no fault of Ray's.

Matt is terrific. He showed up on time, finished on time, and his estimate was spot on. Not only that, but he's incredibly friendly and professional. I hired him to rehang the wooden gate of the fence in my front yard. It's a really old fence, and he was able to handle the job quickly. Thanks a lot, Matt. I would definitely recommend him for any handyman work.

I had a great experience with this business! Rocko & his partner showed up just in time when the snow stopped and did a great job at plowing the driveway, walkway and the front of my house. His communication was excellent and the work was done quickly. I'm very satisfied. Pricing was fair & work was efficient. Hopefully it doesn't snow anymore but if it does I will definitely be contacting him for snow removal.

I needed a handrail replaced and didn't want one of those spindly, weak ones you find in most homes as I have someone who has CP living in my home and she is hard on railings, using them heavily for support. I explained what I'd like to have, he designed it and installed it and did an OUTSTANDING job. He also repaired a gate in the privacy fence and did a great job with that as well!

Timothy was professional, reliable, and installed our fence quickly. All our neighbors commented on how nice the fence looked, and made comments how they need to replace theirs now! He even went the extra mile to make sure our dogs would not be able to escape with reinforcement to the fence and gate! Highly recommended!

Brant was very helpful and professional and his price is right. On time, patient, and careful with this job, which was moving furniture and even partial disassembly and re-assembly of exercise equipment. Brant also helped me with Gate repair and modification. I fully plan to hire Brant in the future!

Franko is very kind and reasonable. He not only fixed our sprinkler system, but installed two baby gates and blinds. When he was out getting the relevant part for the irrigation system, he brought back batteries we needed for my son's toy. He has the best prices out there and is very handy. Will definitely use again.

I needed a new fence and gate put up PDQ. After several contractors scoffed at the "small job", I found RDM Construction on Thumbtack. Rick came out, gave a very reasonable bid, and started the next day. He did a very good job, and I am happy with the finished product. Would recommend him to others.

David Faiell, owner of Imagine Design & Fabrication was reffered to me by my daughter. I hired David to do a complete back yard make over. I really was over whelmed with design ideas. David was great. Had so many ideas. We finally went with some beautiful colors of stain on a small patio off the master. Then he used free form slate all in my driveway, leading to my back yard & even incorporated the slate on my patio poles. Finished with a beautiful Patern on my main patio. David also took some if the slate & stained it in a nice Patern with the same color stain on my small patio. Added some great shrubs & plants, with some nice size rocks & boulders. Also added special lighting throught my front & back yard. I love the river effect he created. Love to listen to it. So tranquil. I wouldent, Even hesitate to refer David FAIELLA. For any project. Great attitude.

We had the opportunity to work with Morgan on a kitchen table, and he was able to craft it to our exact specifications and it turned out fantastic. The work was done so well, that we asked if he could design "baby" gates for our house to match our railing, and they turned out better than we could have hoped. Morgan's work is truly unique, and he wants to make sure that the finished product is exactly what you had hoped for. We will work with Morgan again on future projects, without hesitation.

My fence had blown down and the posts were in disrepair. Ben reached out when I asked for help IMMEDIATELY and was at my house within hours. He singlehandedly replaced the posts and put the fence up for a reasonable price. The fence is solid. Bonus: he drove to my neighbor's house and collected 1/2 the pay from her (the neighbor and I had agreed to split the cost) to make things more convenient for me. He also advised me on how to fix my shed door and I was told that he offered to fix my neighbor's gate when he was there as well. He was punctual, courteous and flexible. Will most likely use him again for other repair jobs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
