Sana is AMAZING at what she does! I felt and looked like a princess on my wedding day. I had 10 girls total who needed to get make up done. I had 2 make up artists. Sana was able to get 7 girls finished in the same time the other 3 were done. What was amazing was her work did not look rushed AT ALL. She is just simply a pro! She was friendly, professional, and fun to work with. Not to mention, she was sick so canceled our initial trial day. I have a difficult schedule to work with so when I suggested a day, she gladly accepted it. Come to find out, it was the night before her own wedding! She said she felt bad telling me no twice, so she did my make up during her wedding weekend! I felt so bad! That just goes to show you how much pride she takes in her work and how professional she really is. I am so glad I hired her!

I never write reviews but Stephanie Borger gets one! I had a make-up lesson with her for my daughters wedding. She is responsive, personable, FUN, professional and very talented. My experience with make-up artists in the past is that they apply the same makeup in the same pattern for all face types and ages. I explained this frustration to Stephanie right away and she agreed and totally customized my make-up routine for my shape of face, and "aging" areas. I am 59 and walked out of the lesson in my early 40's. Thank You Stephanie.

Christina did an outstanding job as a makeup artist for my daughter, her bride's maids, the mother-of-the-groom and mother-of-the-bride. She was friendly and professional. Christina asked a lot of questions to ensure she was meeting each individual's desires. I highly recommend Christina as a makeup artist, whatever your event.

My daughter and I had the pleasure of working with Melissa and her assistant this past weekend. We inquired on thumbtack.com about makeup artists for my daughter’s prom. Melissa was 1 of 3 professionals who provided a quote. After reviewing the quotes, websites and portfolios of each individual, it was clear that Melissa was the professional we wanted to work with. Melissa was quick to respond to our questions via email and very pleasant on the phone. She even called the day before the prom to confirm that she would be there at the time and location we previously discussed. Melissa and her assistant arrived at my house, on time with all necessary make-up and tools to create the look my daughter was seeking. Melissa asked questions and truly listened to what my daughter wanted which was a really natural looking make-up with some light touches of gold to highlight and add sparkle. Once Melissa was done, my daughter and I could not have been more pleased with the final outcome. I would highly recommend Melissa to friends and family who are looking for a great make-up artist for special events and I will most definately use Melissa for all future needs. Thank you Melissa for making my daughters day special and for providing such a great first experience using thumbtack.com.

I have had the pleasure of working with Stephanie a few times now. She has been the make-up artist for some of my clients (I am a photographer), and they all looked flawless. Recently, she even worked her magic on me and did my make-up for an anniversary photo shoot with my husband. Stephanie is so talented at what she does, and an absolute joy to work with! I am so glad our paths crossed, and I look forward to working with her again in the future!

I found Kelli on Thumbtack when searching for a makeup artist for my wedding. After our first makeup trial she had suggested a schedule leading up to my wedding with a series of chemical peels and dermaplaneing so my face was in tip top shape for my big day. I'm so happy I did!! Knowing my skin was on a routine to lead up to my big day was a huge stress relief. On my wedding day Not only my makeup but my whole bridal party's makeup was fabulous. Thank you a million Kelli💕💗💕

I hired Adrianna to do hair and makeup for myself and all of my bridesmaids. It was great working with her and I would definitely recommend her to others! I don't wear a lot of makeup, so I was initially uncertain about hiring a hair and makeup artist. Adrianna helped me create the perfect look that was natural enough that I still felt like myself, but fancy enough for my wedding day. She also did a great job with my hair! I got tons of compliments. I was also really impressed that she managed to do hair and makeup for myself and all of my bridesmaids without an assistant. I think she may have even finished a little bit ahead of schedule, so we had some time to relax before photos. Thank you so much to Adrianna for helping my wedding day run smoothly!

Heather is a patient and creative makeup artist. She walked me through every step so I could attempt to duplicate the application at home. Heather listened to my request for covering my red spots, and she made my skin look flawless! Her products are top notch and long lasting. The studio Heather has is comfortable and calming. I would recommend Heather to anyone looking for a professional makeup artist. She is amazing!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.
