Guy did a great job. I thought my oil-burning furnace/boiler just needed a routine clean and tune-up, but Guy took the extra time to chisel out debris that was built up in the combustion chamber. He also gave me tons of advice on how to make my system safer and more efficient.

Cye helped me install 2 ecobee smart thermostats with an existing wire that was not hooked up. Additionally, the night before, I had some issues with my boiler for hydronic heat not getting pressure, and Cye was able to help me figure out why and fixed it. He took his time explaining everything as he goes and taught me my way around my heating system. Not only do I have 2 working smart thermostats now, I also feel a lot more confident around my heating system now.

My husband and I were very pleased with the service Andy provided! We called for an issue for our heating system thinking there was a major issue that was wrong and Andy came in the same day to assess the issue. He assured us it wasn't a major issue when others made us believe it was and resolved over heating system immediately. The results were great! His price was extremely reasonable and we were very happy in the end. I would definitely recommend him. He's very professional, knowledgeable and reasonable. Thanks again Andy, expect a call from us for any other issues we may have with our Hvac system in the future!

I was very pleased with P&M mechanical. Before installing two new heating and cooling units for us, Phil went over all of our options. Once we decided to go with new units instead of repairing the old ones, the work was completed quickly, professionally, and was affordable. I highly recommend P&M Mechanical.

We hired Doug and his crew to set up central air on the ground floor of our house (we already had existing ducts for our heating system) and mini split ductless AC units in the bedrooms on the second floor. From start to finish Doug was punctual, clear, answered any questions I had (very responsive over the phone for last minute questions), and at the start and end of each phase of the project he always met with us to go over what would be done and to check in to make sure we were satisfied with the work after it was done or answer questions. The work was completed quickly. Unlike other contractors, there was no lull in the work. His crew worked diligently to get the work done in a timely fashion. Now that the weather has been warm enough to use the AC, we couldn't be happier. The central air cools the house quickly amd queitly amd the ductless mini splits he installed by LG are attractvie and do an excellent job cooling our large bedrooms. Whats more, we always get compliments on how nice they look. I highly recommend this company.

I called Adam to for a second opinion about my heating and cooling. My super and his heating guy had said I needed to replace the unit... that it could not be fixed. It was going to cost me $2,500.00. Adam came over and immediately found the problem. He ordered the new part, and a few days later he came back and installed it. I cannot be more grateful. I checked his reviews on various sites before calling, and he was rated A+. I totally agree!

John was recommended to us by Migliaro Fuel Oil, when our 12 year old Peerless Boiler cracked on the coldest month of the year. Our house is 12 years old so we have radiant floor heat, hydro air and we get our hot water from the same heating system. John did a great job installing a Buderus boiler, he is very dedicated and responded very quickly and stayed on the job until the system was fine-tuned, we are very satisfied with the work and the system.

This is our first time using Cody Plumbing and Air Conditioning. They were recommended to me by a family friend that has been using them for years. Our experience couldnt have been any better. The technician showed up in a timely matter and was very personable and knowledgeable. He diganoised the issue as per the $40 diganoistic fee and once the issue was found he gave me repair cost before any work was completed. I was so thankful that a technican was able to come to my house on 4th of July since I had 30 people at my house for my sons confirmation party. The issue was fixed and I couldnt be happier. Will definitely be recommending them to my family and friends and using Cody Plumbing and Air Conditioning in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
