Needed to move a large desk from a location in an outer borough to Manhattan. The movers were early, pleasant and professional. While their price was higher than other movers, I went with my guts ~ glad I did. I would use them again.

Most movers are late and wishy washy and don't bother to keep you in the loop, at least in my experience. Well, we were scheduled for 9am, and not only were the crew from Tony's not late, they actually showed up a full half hour early, ready and raring to go. Here's how good these guys are. My wife and I had literally been up all night trying desperately to get everything packed but were woefully behind schedule. When Philip and his crew arrived, I explained to them we were late and to please just take everything that was packed, and we would just handle the rest ourselves the next day. As it is, we had grossly underestimated how many boxes we had, and were probably already over the number that our quote had been based on. Instead of being glad they'd have less work to do, Philip actually had his guys building boxes for us and encouraging us to just fill them while they worked so we'd have less to do ourselves the next day. I was exhausted and had already given up, but these guys literally motivated me to get a second wind and I must have given them a dozen extra boxes to take. Probably more. In the back of my mind, I kept thinking, ok, well this is gonna cost me. They have a flat rate, but we had exceeded the estimate by a large margin. These guys took a 220 lb CRT television like it was no big deal. Anyway, when the time came to pay up, a full five hours later, the price was unchanged. I can't imagine how much extra materials they burned through, but they didn't charge us a penny extra. Better, they had our TV wrapped in a blanket, and since our apartment was still pretty much under construction, they didn't want to unwrap it and leave it at risk, so they just gave us the blanket to keep so the TV wouldn't get damaged. This is the kind of place Tony's is, and Philip and his crew in particular. They were the nicest guys you can come across, never had one complaint or negative word to say. Oh, and about that price. It wasn't like some compromise where we decided to pay more for better service. This was a rock bottom price, by far the lowest estimate we could find. I can tell you at least one place estimated THREE TIMES the price. Another, well-regarded moving company quoted us double and said anyone who quotes less will upcharge you at the last minute when you have no choice. Not only did these guys not do that, but they had every opportunity to and chose not to. I really can't say enough good things about these guys. If you have any doubt whatsoever, drop it. I absolutely assure you they are the real deal. By far the best movers I have ever seen in action. I will use them exclusively going forward, and will recommend them to everyone I know who needs movers. You'd honestly be a fool to go with someone else. And I'd ask for Philip, personally, if I had to do it all over again. He wasn't just patient, but went out of his way to reduce our obvious stress. This is the place you want to go with, take my word for it.

Aleh and his partner was great! We had a difficult move with multiple stops and a big refrigerator and stove. He was able to move all of the appliances skillfully and not damage any walls. He did in 6 hours what other movers would do in 8. Definitely recommend him.

Hired Jay and his team to help me pack and move boxes and furniture to my uhaul (was moving upstate). His business is legit and insured (important when hiring movers) and his team members were professional. This was a big job, and they knocked it out. Looking at hiring them again for a cleaning job. Highly recommend!

I Cannot be more thankful. 10 Star Review for Global 1 Movers!!! I initially made contact with Nicole and scheduled an in-home survey of our place. (On time) their sales representative Joe arrived and quickly surveyed our condo answering all our questions while we walked around. He left us a written quote and emailed it to us as well. After comparing 3 quotes we decided to go with Global1.They were not the cheapest but we felt comfortable with Joe and the service thus far. Our move took place on a rainy windy day and the guys arrived on time and performed what I called a SUPER move for us! Thanks Oscar and your team for the amazing job! The quote was perfect and the day became an easy non-complicated move (unlike a lot of stories I've heard of movers). These are the only movers I'll ever use. Definitely call Global 1. We will Rant and Rave and recommend their services always.

Company owner Ryan and I ended up at the wrong pickup point for my packages, but he didn't complain about the extra 20 minute drive to the correct location. When he arrived, we encountered a postal clerk who told us it was impossible to get my boxes, since he was working alone, and he couldn't give us access to the building to get them ourselves. Ryan persisted in polite persuasion about the situation, and after five minutes, the man held up a mail truck and let Ryan and his helper use the postal loading dock. Stellar performance on Ryan's part. When we arrived at my destination, Ryan and his helper neatly stacked my boxes around the sides of the garage--not just in a big pile. A bonus to the pair's performance as movers, Ryan was very enjoyable to work with (oh, and his helper was nice too!) I highly recommend this company to one and all.

Hands down, best moving experience I’ve ever had- and I’ve moved a number of times. Tyler, the owner, is extremely responsive and conscientious. The two movers who arrived kept me in the loop as to their exact arrival time (as did Tyler, and they were even early per my request!), and were beyond polite and professional. I felt very comfortable having them move all my personal belongings and would probably only ever use them again. I strongly recommend you cancel the other movers you booked and book Beaumont instead!

Joshua and his partner (Brad? I think his name was Brad. I'm going to call him Brad.) were the best movers I could've hired. I chose FMS based on the excellent reviews, and they were right. Joshua is very responsive, very flexible, and very helpful. He made sure I didn't overpay for boxes and allowed me to postpone my move due to issues in my new building. They also graciously (and quickly) packed my items since I am partially disabled and unable to do a lot of it myself. I would definitely hire Family Moving Services again, and have already referred others to them!

This handyman service added a second rod to my bedroom closet. He had to raise the existing shelf and rod and then add the second rod. The final product appears to be satisfactory. Only time will tell. The only concerns I have are that the original quote was too low and the time to complete the job was not accurate. I ended up paying more than double the original quote and a one day job took two days. Would I use this company again? Yes, but we would definitely have to be clear on the time and the cost of the job. Ellen W

We were told that 2 guys were going to be moving us from our 2-bedroom apartment to house, but 3 showed up. This was especially nice considering movers charge by the hour. They showed up on time, worked efficiently, and made sure that any fragile items were handled with care. Being both professional and laid back, I would definitely use these guys for any future moves!

Move Quick is a moving company that brought professionalism back in style. They are very efficient movers that really go the extra mile. To be honest, they made moving a simple process. I felt somewhat like a rock star as I sat and sipped my Starbucks, while the team of movers loaded the truck in an organized military fashion that even the toughest drill sergeants would be impressed. They arrived promptly on time, and one of the gentlemen instructed me to sit on down and sip my tea while they work their magic (sits down happily). They wrapped my kitchen items, had boxes with rails to hang my clothes, and unpacked my new place in no time. This is not a moving company that plays games and moves slow to drive up the cost given that they work on a per hour basis. Move Quick was precise and efficient. I was so pleased with their work that I referred my mother for a local move and another friend to get a car moved. They too, were exceptionally pleased with the stellar degree of professionalism of move quick. Moving forward (pun intended, lol), this is the one and only moving company that I will ever use for all of my moving/packing needs. They really took ALL of the stress out of moving, especially being a complainer, it's a little harder, but they set up my living room, bedroom and did not leave until I was 100% happy with everything. I did not strain any back muscles trying to lift, pull, carry or tug anything, which is worth a celebratory glass of wine. Clinks glasses up in the air...cheers!! Seriously, this is a moving company that goes the extra in all areas.Thomas and his team were simply phenomenal, kind and respectful to my home. They are reliable, honest, trustworthy professionals that have truly mastered the art of efficient moving. Thanks a million MOVE QUICK INC!!!!!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
