We were looking to replace a bathroom vanity and to remove some existing tiling around that vanity. Jason was fast and thorough. The new vanity looks great and works perfectly. He also did a great job in helping to preliminary spackle up the wall where the tile had been.

Jerome did a great job mounting a 60inch TV to the wall. Was a tough job as there was a concrete wall behind the drywall but he managed to make it work. It looks great.

We bought a new TV and wanted to mount it on the wall in our apartment. Realized shortly after moving in that the wall was cement, and needed some extra help (didn't have the tools to drill through the cement and didn't want to fuss buying new stuff). After researching and fielding different offers, we eventually hired Lopez Home Improvement LLC. Thought this would be an easy job -- it wasn't. I've drilled through cement before, but this stuff was strong. Real strong. Overall, Walter came in prepared and professional. He worked non-stop and completed the job in an efficient manner. All I can say is I appreciate his patience throughout the time he was here -- it wasn't an easy job to say the least. But above all else, we couldn't be happier with the result. Did I mention he charged us an extremely favorable rate to complete this job? I would easily recommend. Worth every penny.

Harry did a terrific job in every respect — from installing blinds, a smoke detector, and a full length mirror, to hanging cabinets and various pieces of art (including one more than 7 feet wide, which he mounted on a plaster wall perfectly level), fixing an outdoor gate, and staining outdoor steps. All the work was done with meticulous care and concern to be meeting our needs. We will definitely have him back for other projects. It's a privilege to recommend him to others!

We recently hired Dino & Sons to paint several rooms in our home, a couple of which also required a bit of replastering due to holes in the wall from the previous owners. From the time we posted the project, Sonny was very quick to respond, prompt in arriving to give us an estimate and flexible (as we were a bit delayed in finalizing our color selections). Having met with 3 other painters, Sonny was the only one that took notes as we showed him the rooms we wanted painted. He also was the only one to leave a Benjamin Moore Color Deck to help us in selecting colors. We ultimately chose Dino & Sons due as a result of how responsive and professional Sonny was and are glad we did. Sonny and his crew member were very professional and efficient in their work. There were a few other minor things that Sonny noticed needed touching up and offered to do so at no additional charge. We have a few more projects we will need to complete in the coming months and will definitely reach out to Dino & Sons.

Nelson came to help me even though it was a last min late day call. He and his partner came and repaired all the electrical problems around my house including the hard-to-reach high up wall areas. His price was very reasonable for the quality work that he performed. Very pleasant to do business with. Thank you. Greenwich, CT

Rome and his team did an amazing job in my 1910 dining room restoring plaster walls and ceiling that had much damage. Very fine workmanship. They never rushed the job and were extremely professional. Not one detail missed. If you want excellent work at fair and reasonable prices don't look anywhere else.

I hired Francisco to paint my baby nursery in May 2015. When he arrived, I realized I failed to mention that I wanted two colors on the walls-- the bottom 1/3 grey, and the top 2/3 blue-- so Francisco had to spend extra time measuring, taping, waiting for the paint to dry, then re-taping and painting some more to get the job done. Despite this, he was completely gracious about it and did not utter one complaint (I paid him a little more than we originally negotiated to make up for my blunder). Not only did Francisco finish the job with a smile on his face, but he is also a perfectionist (which I'm realizing is an important quality to have in a painter), and when he noticed the paint was streaky in spots, he offered to come by again free of charge to finish the job. He did, and the finished product is really gorgeous and perfect for the nursery. I'm really happy with it. Francisco was at all times, 100% professional, very reliable, highly responsive (he texts back immediately and lets you know when he is close to arriving), and someone who generally takes pride in his work. Also, this is an aside, but for the women out there who are concerned about safety when inviting a random person into your house (I am generally pretty weary about this), I was not only alone but also very, very pregnant and I felt completely comfortable as soon as I met Francisco. All around, I'm very pleased with his work and his work ethic. I plan to hire him again the next time i have a painting project.

I hired Carlos to finish tape, sand, and paint my garage ceiling and walls. He gave me a fair price, showed up on the day he said he would and stayed on the job until it was finished. His work was top notch and he was very accommodating of any special needs that I asked for. He responded to e-mails right away and always kept me informed of status.

PM Drywall in two words: Fantastic work! We are trying to sell our house and move south. We had a leaking roof with 4 areas with very large drywall repair needs.Pedro repaired these areas, and many other dings, furniture dents, cat scratches, etc. that we pointed out. He also repaired raised drywall seams and other problems we did not notice. The end results were smooth, perfect ceilings and walls! Professional work, pleasant gentleman, great cleanup, at a fair price. I would not hesitate, nor would I call for other estimates, to recommend PM Drywall. They also do interior and exterior painting, probably with the same quality.

They were absolutely super! Incredibly neat and clean. The work was very professional - and amazingly well-done. They had to insulate, redo walls and ceilings (all due to water damage) and remove wallpaper, etc. They also painted a kitchen with a cathedral ceiling (super-fantastic job!)! The men working were also very respectful to my elderly Mom (always a serious bonus). Truly can't say enough about how impressed I was with the quality of the work performed by them!

So happy with the work of Eswin &JDA General Contracting did for us! The project was completed in one day- whitewash of a tall brick fireplace wall. Eswin promptly replied to my initial request, he came to our appointment on time, well prepared with the estimate + the time frame for the project. He made several very important and useful suggestions (color-wise! - not to use just stark white!) He protected the areas around, he used a scaffold not a ladder; and he left the place impeccably clean. The room has been transformed and updated from the 1980s to now! THANK YOU!

We hired Mike last fall for a major project of removing 26 large multi-sized contemporary windows, and to replace them with new construction windows. A massive and daunting task when considering the scope of the project. He and his proficient work crew did an exemplary job finalizing the project beyond our expectations. We appreciated his ongoing communication, professional skills, attention to detail, the cleanliness of the worksite, and respect for our home. He completed the project, within the budget, which was a fair and competitive price and in a timely manner. Mike takes pride in his work, and no corners are cut. We recently rehired Mike to replace 3 multi-paneled sliding glass doors with stationary side panels which was also done equally well. We would highly recommend Goodman Builders to anyone seeking professional work, a knowledgeable, skilled, and respectful work crew, and value for your dollar.

Lucas created a wonderful piece of work, and truly transformed our dreams into reality! Remarkable craftsmanship hiding all the wires without going into the walls! Painting impeccable and fast! We are so happy to have found them to do this job for us! Thank you!!!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
