We loved having Sailing Stone perform at our farm. The band has a beautiful sound whether singing their original songs or performing a cover song. The way they harmonize together is mesmerizing. The crowd seemed to think so, too. We look forward to booking them again!

My husband James and I had the privilege of having Spencer and Sequoia perform at our wedding at a winery in Virginia this summer. It would be a huge understatement to say we were SO pleased with how everything went!!! Spencer and Sequoia were amazingly professional and joyful to work with and super gracious with everything. It was the first time I had worked with a band of any kind so from the second we signed a contract, they were extremely responsive of our needs and questions, provided a very lengthy and diverse song list and even said they would be willing to learn song requests for a nominal fee. Because they're based out of New York, they had to make the long drive the morning of and were totally on board to work with our tomeline and the venue set up. They were also super self sufficient so we didn't have to worry about providing them equipment as they assured us they had everything they needed and required little set up time which proved to be true. We had them perform during our ceremony, cocktail hour AND reception but they did it like champs and our guests could not stop raving about how great they sounded! Not only were they just downright talented, they were a pleasure to have around as well. At one point, my nephew who sung a song for us was experiencing technical difficulties with his sound system so Spencer right away let him use his, which was a total lifesaver. Bottom line- customer service is beyond amazing with this lovely husband wife pair and we are so happy and grateful we could have them be a part of our special day. THANK YOU Spencer & Sequoia!

I have seen Malorie's live performance with her band Soul Be It at Patchogue Theatre and her vocals and stage presence are outstanding. I honestly can say Malorie is one of the best vocalists on Long Island. I always recall that particular show where she opened for well known '70's Disco' artists. I really enjoyed her stage to audience connection. Malorie covers of a wide range of music genres including Disco, Funk, Motown and current dance tracks. Very impressive.

I'm Aziza, a song writer and artist from New York. One day many years ago I was looking for someone to help me put my music together in a studio. I called a number out of a Village Voice ad, and that was the beginning of a long music production relationship with Bruce Whitcomb. I'd have to say I'm currently mostly a jazz/R&B/musician/poet in my own right. I have been a musician my whole life due to a great part to my musical dad and having been strongly influenced by R&B artists when I grew up. Jazz is in my blood, and I was very glad to learn that Bruce had a deep love of it too. In many of our recordings in the beginning, I'd have Bruce program drums and then I'd play all the other parts. When I write, I get very specific about bass lines and parts I hear, and being a pianist primarily, I've always played my own keyboard parts. One day Bruce offered to play electric bass and guitar on a tune. I didn't really know he played back then! He sat back and attentively watched me put my music together without interjecting any more than that, which was in many ways refreshing- until I heard what he had to offer to enhance my music from his own perspective which was a lot. He always engineered the sessions very quickly and accurately, and for me as my own producer, that is really important in the studio. Anyway, his contributions became invaluable, and from that day on I was always interested to see where his parts would take my music. We have probably recorded about twenty songs together over about a twenty year span or so. I have my own band of great musicians and play primarily around the east coast. I have headed up the late night jazz jams at the Blue Note in NYC, been the primary keyboard sub in Oprah Winfrey's broadway show The Color Purple, been Natalie Cole's musical director and pianist on a several tours, and have had songs of mine covered by artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Natalie Cole and others. Bruce is a close friend and a very musical soul. I prize our musical relationship as much as our personal friendship. I know he can always do wonders in the studio and recommend his abilities highly to any aspiring artist on any level

My guests and I were treated to great entertainment over the weekend. I hired Peter to perform for my husbands birthday party. We had several conversations before the party, as I wanted to make certain that he touched on some of my husbands favorite songs and artists. Peter was very accommodating. He even learned some new songs for our party. Peter also took requests and tried to accommodate several of my guests song requests. He really covers so many styles of music. It was a perfect evening and I am very happy I made the best hire for our party. I highly recommend Peter for any type of function that requires a talented singer and guitar player, that sounds like a full band.

As a member of the Board of Directors, and entertainment coordinator for The Friend of the Farm at Hilltop, a 501c3 non profit group in North central Connecticut restoring an historic farmstead into an agricultural and educational community resource, I've had the pleasure of contracting the Fast Lane Band several times for our public fundraising events. Their professionalism and reliability is outstanding. Truly the entertainment value here is HUGE. Their versatile playlists cover so many genres, and their delivery is so good- low key, high key -whatever, that everyone is always satisfied. I highly recommend this musical group for any function- Corporate, Civic, Weddings, Private Parties you name it- just make sure you have plenty of dance floor space. Definitely 5 stars here!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

          • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
          • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
          • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
