Corinn is fantastic! She identified issues and came up with solutions right away. She understands the breed and how to speak their language. She’s also there to answer questions when new issues crop up (such is the nature of puppies) I highly recommend her services to anyone seeking effective yet affordable help with training their dog.

Robin has been great to work with while training my puppy! She does an amazing job of teaching you how to properly train your puppy or dog and will give you guidance all along the way! She always makes herself available for questions about your training when you get frustrated or lost in your training. She comes right to your house for training and will usually stay a bit longer if she has the time available =)

Andrew was a pleasure to work with. He provided the necessary tools and tips for training our dog. Within a few sessions our dog 'mastered' the commands. Key to success which Andrew stresses is working with your dog on a continued basis. Training is done with all family members. I'm truly grateful for your services Andrew. Looking forward to working with you again. Much Thanks!

Adrienne is a dedicated trainer who puts the dogs needs first. An excellent problem solver, using fair and consistent methods. I have personally had great results leaving a sport dog in her care for a board and train. My dog received the structured work she needed. I would not hesitate using this trainer in the future. I highly recommend using Adrienne for any training your dog needs.

Niamh met all of our expectations. Her expertise in puppy training helped us understand the behavior of our little puppy and helped us enjoy our little companion. Her interest in us enjoying "Oliver" went beyond her initial visit, as Neeve followed it up with calls and advise on the progress being made. Niamh is an asset to Thumbtack !

I began working with Rick about a month ago to assist with my 18-month old pitbull, Petunia. Petunia had become aggressive to strangers (e.g., lunging, barking aggressively) when out in public and in the home and I was very much beside myself with how to address the behaviors. We had attempted obedience training at the pet store which did not correct the problem and she continued to worsen. People were afraid of my little pitty and I was developing a sense of hopelessness and resignation where I no longer even wanted to take her for walks and just figured we would have to live a limited lifestyle with her. As a last ditch effort to address Petunia's aggression, I had a consultation with Rick. He took an hour to meet with us to evaluate her. Petunia aggressively barked and lunged the whole time at Rick, but he thought she could be helped and we signed on for the ride. What a journey it has been. In less than a month, I have a restored sense of hope that Petunia can reach her full potential as a wonderful pet. With several training sessions and several trips to stay with Rick, Petunia is now heeling, is much more under control, is not barking aggressively or lunging on walks, and appears more calm and mellow overall. Rick has also taken much time to continuously meet and/or consult with me and my boyfriend on how to maintain the progress by teaching us how to handle Petunia on our own. We are still in the midst of Petunia's training, but I can see a complete 180 in her and am forever grateful that we made the decision to work with Rick. I highly recommend him without hesitation.

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

We worked with The Canine Company for one session of dog training. While they are great for obedience training they were not suited for our needs. We were specifically looking for someone who could help us acclimate our new dog to our cats that have been in our family for two years.

Debbie is absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend working with her. We rescued a puppy who has a ton of energy and has some habits which can really test our patience. Debbie helped us to have hope and confidence in ourselves and showed us that we can help our dog be her best! It’s evident that Debbie loves what she does and she immediately had a calming effect on our dog. By implementing the strategies that Debbie provided, we’ve noticed a big difference in our dog- even after just one training session! Training a puppy requires a lot of patience and it’s easy to become a bit defeated or feel like it’s never going to work. Debbie is extremely supportive and knowledgeable and will show you that it is possible.

We met Erica when our rescue-girl, Stella, was just a few months old and a pupil in one of her puppy classes. Id never seen a more dedicated, knowledgeable and passionate animal-lover and I doubt you could introduce one to me, either. Now Erica has branched out with a company where her dedication and talent create a special world for any dog who is fortunate enough to be near her. Its uncanny. Its wonderful. Erica, we love you! Stella misses you! Its been such an honor to learn from youand Ive had dogs all my life.

My husband and I live in an apartment and needed our new puppy to be able to live in an apartment life style. We researched on the Websites for a training centre who would be able to assist us in training our puppy to adjust to his new surroundings. We certainly made the right choice when choosing K9 National Services, we are extremely happy with the results and our puppy. We have found Nikhil to be a very professional and caring person in the way he handles his business and clients. Nik you are amazing, thank you for all the loving hard work you do....

Gave basic and off leash obedience training to my 130 pound long-haired German Shepherd. Perfect training for a dog that listens better to more intensive training techniques. 10 years later, he still responds to recall, heel, and left or right commands.

I met Charli when I was training my pug, Rosie, to become a therapy dog. Rosie is a bit older so I was unsure if this would be possible. Charli is patient and kind with all of the dog owners and just as patient and kind with the dogs with a wonderful confidence that she uses in her training techniques. If you use Charli for dog training you can be sure you are in good hands. She doesn't stop until both dog and owner are completely trained. Her knowledge and experience can't be matched. I definitely recommend The Dog Chick!!!

I worked with Chris when he was just starting. I have a female Rottweiler mix who was very dog aggressive and I was trying to rescue another dog. I had my dog for 7 years before I was able to have her around another dog. I thought it was impossible. I was very nervous after breaking up multiple dog fights with her and getting bitten once. Chris gave me the tools to be in control of my dog. He made me confident and made it fun. Training with my dog was something I looked forward to and was proud of. I saw progress every week. We now have not only adopted another dog, we have adopted 3 more! My dog that I started with assists me in training the new guys. She is confident and content and has a completely new attitude. Chris completely changed how I interacted with my dog. Thank you so much!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
