I hired Bob (A&B Home Expert) to do a challenging fence repair right after a snow/sleet storm. This just wasn't a regular repair because it was on a slop, snow had built up and then became a frozen sheet of ice and the fallen section pulled down the post. Bob came the day after I was contacted so that was a big plus because I have a dog that could have run away threw the fallen section. Bob completed the job with expertise! Did a fantastic job in a very timely fashion. I would strongly recommend him to anyone! I will be using Bob on future projects! As a side note, Thumbtack is a great way to make contact with local contractors. I had a great experience using Thumbtack!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING WORK!!!!! I hired Jacques to fix a painting job gone horribly wrong. When I first spoke to Jacques my idea was to just put wallpaper up to cover up the awful walls in my bathroom because I thought I was going to have to spend an arm and a leg getting the walls redone. Jacques came to my house to give me a free estimate, and brainstormed with me different ways to fix the walls and trim at a price that would fit my budget. As a person, Jacques is hardworking, courteous, easy going / no pressure, and dedicated to his craft - his work is phenomenal! Before Jacques fixed my bathroom walls and trim, I was crying tears of disgust, and when he was done, they turned into tears of joy! Jacques turned what I imagined my bathroom should look like into a reality. His quotes are EXTREMELY reasonable for the amount and quality of his work - he skim coated the walls, put nice trim along the floor, re-did trim around the door, primed and painted the walls, removed an ancient medicine cabinet, patched holes with drywall, installed a new light, plug, and came up with a great solution for a 1 inch gap between the sink / vanity and wall. I am beyond impressed with Jacques and his craftsmanship. When all the work was done, you couldn't even tell he had been working in that room by how clean it was (it was cleaner then when he started the job). I can guarantee you that when you hire Jacques, you are hiring a true professional! Since he did such a fantastic job with the bathroom, I'm rehiring him to fix the walls in my living room and hallway. He's definitely a contractor you want to hang onto!

As a frequent Thumbtack user, I've had a lot of contractors work on my house including other painters. Cleynira Construction and the owner Cody are by far the best we've ever used. They painted the outside of our 1950 colonial and it looks fantastic!! Cody also used his construction skills to remedy some tricky wood rot in some decorative detailing areas near that I thought would be very difficult to fix. If you want superior quality work at a very competitive price, I highly recommend these guys. I'm extremely happy with their work and I will rehire them at every opportunity.

I had Dave Dohl of Homestead Contractors do a roof repair on my over 100 year old home. He came out to my home, gave me a quote on the work, and started the job the next day. He was efficient and extremely helpful. The quality of his work was excellent and he did a very good cleanup after the job was through. After the roof was done, he did some trim painting on the front of my house which improved the street view of my house a lot. I would highly recommend Dave Dohl to anyone in the Moodus/East Haddam or Middlesex county area. I would definitely use Homestead Contractors again.

Dimension Restoration & Construction is a dream to work with. I approached Ishita when my wife and I purchased land in West Hampton. Since it was a small lot, I wanted to maximize the use of the space while remaining true to the architectural vision of similar homes in the area. In addition, I wanted to blend my love of industrial modern with mid-century style while finding a way to include modern conveniences. I immediately knew after my first meeting with Ishita and Mike that they understood my vision and that the company was much more than a general contractor. They very quickly came up with plans to match our design and introduced me to all the suppliers that we would need to realize the final vision. Dimension was on top of the ordering process and managed all the materials from the start. I was also very impressed with the team of project managers assigned to my project. Unlike many general contractors, Mike and his team initiated a high and consistent level of communication with me as both client and designer. His entire staff was responsive to any request and I felt like I could contact them with any detail, big or small. Attention to detail is important to me and Dimension didn’t disappoint. From the plate and drain covers to the high gloss cabinetry and appliances, the team was there to manage each aspect of this project. I can be a demanding client but I always felt that Dimension was on my side. There were several times during the renovation that I was out of town and I didn’t worry that work would continue in my absence. I felt completely confident in the team and knew that I could trust them to watch over the details. Even down to the final walk-through and punch list, Dimension stayed with me and responded quickly. Additionally, the billing process was simple and painless. Although the major phase of my renovation is complete, I plan to use them for some small projects. If you are looking for high design and attention to detail, I would not hesitate to recommend Dimension Restoration & Construction.

Very pleased with Bob and his crew. After two years of being jerked around by various contractors and friends who said they could "easily do this" we finally found RM Paolino Construction. Bob met with us on a Saturday and gave us a detailed estimate with some great cost-saving design changes for our kitchen and bathroom. We signed a contract that following Friday and by Monday morning our bathroom was gutted and on its way. What a relief it's been to deal with a real contractor after all time we wasted with other so called "professionals". Bob has kept us up to speed every step of the way and the bathroom looks great. Can't wait for kitchen to start. Highly recommend RM Construction to anyone looking for a professional, full service contractor who won't give you the run around!

We found Bruce on Thumbtack and this was the first time we took a quote from someone on this app. Our first impressions were great! For those who have had work done before, getting a contractor to show up on time when they say they will be there is half the battle sometimes. Bruce showed up when he said he would be there with what he needed to quote the job (again I cannot tell you how many times contractors will show up with nothing). Very professional and left a good first impression. We eventually hired him for the job of designing and building built ins around our fireplace. He based his designs of some ideas I found online, but his architectural skills of aesthetically designing the project to fit into our space were excellent and exactly what we wanted from him! The end result (which turned into a phase 2 project to again design and build an aesthetic beam and pillars separating our open floor plan and flow into the built ins he just made) was literally perfect. Matched our taste, design of the house and the craftsmen ship was some of the best I have seen. I don't like to talk cost because everyone has their own opinion on what is considered expensive however what I can say is he had 3 change orders on the whole project (one of which was a good size relatively speaking to the built in project) and he was clearly very fair and right in line with my expectations. This speaks volumes on the type of person and businessman he is. A++ contractor and will 100% be using him again in the future!

Nick was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the work I needed done. I started a complete bathroom remodel on March 19th and I had to fire my original contractor for various reasons. Nick came right in and completed the job (tiled the shower, install the vinyl flooring, installed the vanity and sink faucets, paint and much more) within 5 days. The tile work is immaculate and he really pay attention to detail. I will definitely use Nick again for other work in my home.

From day one Paulino was very responsive to any inquiry I had about the job. He was professional throughout. Due to traffic conditions he was a few minutes behind schedule but he gave me adequate notice of the delay. He was meticulous with the job (interior door installation), completed the job in a timely manner and cleaned up after completion. I highly recommend Paulino Home improvement to anyone who is looking for a door installer!

We recently completed a large addition at our home and recruited Dakota Builders to oversee the project. This was not a small undertaking, by any means. Kevin showed up everyday, on time, negotiated with contractors (there were many) and met with us on a daily basis to discuss ongoing progress, quotes, time frames, etc. He worked closely with our architect, laid out everything and was very detail oriented. We made the right choice with Kevin. His work ethic and attention to detail is outstanding.

Joe, first of all thank you! My family and I are very thankful we found you. I am sure we will talk again in the near future. Martelle Builders are nothing short of professional, responsible, but most of all AMAZING at what they do. I have built a few houses and I have had my share of terrible contractors but Martelle Builders by far exceeded all expectations. There are contractors that will just go into a job and just do it, and then there is Martelle Builders, who treats his job as these houses were of his own. It is more than just the money for these guys. Oh, and did I mention they framed my new construction mid-winter?? Do NOT hesitate to hire MB... I am very glad I didn't.

In early 2015 Laurene worked with me on a project to remodel my master bathroom and walk-in closets. Once the layout was established maximize the space, I was then presented with lovely options for all the fixtures. Any changes were addressed promptly with new options based on my taste. A date was chosen to start and her contractor and his assistants were prompt, efficient, and communicated very well…as Laurene does. As with all large projects, unexpected delays did occur, with unknowns hidden behind the walls. This was no surprise. Throughout the project all questions were addressed quickly, and with the help of Laurene, so were decisions. Laurene bases her decisions on the client’s taste, but adds a twist to enhance the final result. Her taste on how colors, textures, and furnishings all blend together to create a flow in the room is one of her great traits. The bathroom project turned out fabulously, and actually better than I expected.

I would gladly recommend Jon's work! Bel Air remodeled my kitchen and master bath, and the work is gorgeous. I couldn't be happier. Bel Air was also the most reasonably priced contractor I found after searching and interviewing several and taking many quotes. The most important piece to me is that Jon warrantees his work and replaced a faulty light switch for free when I called. That's peace of mind.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
