I am very satisfied with the work Mario Villasenor did at our house. He was very reasonable in price, prompt, and extremely easy to work with. He completed the job sooner than expected and my yard looks great. Our backyard wedding will now be a success. We couldn't have done it without him! I highly recommend G and M for any yard services. We will definitely be using his services again in the future!

Tom and his workers did a great job cleaning up our front and backyard! It was a lot of work, clearing out fallen tree limbs and stones and bricks left behind by previous owners. Thanks again for your professionalism and reasonably priced service!

I really enjoyed working with Elena. She is very knowledgeable about plants and offered several design ideas for deer resistant plants that can survive in the shade. She worked within my budget and the job was completed in one day. I will definitely call her again when I’m ready to do more planting.

We used Plant Design Therapy to lay sod in our backyard. MyLan worked within our budget and was extremely flexible on pricing--especially considering we have a small square footage, and many landscapers wouldn't take on a project this small. We're happy with the end result, but the process of getting there was a bit stressful. We felt rushed and the plans and timeline kept changing. However, we were happy with the end result. MyLan continues to be in touch, offering helpful suggestions on the on-going care of our lawn. We'd recommend her with the caveat of being firm with her about what you want.

Raul and his helper did an excellent job for my Mom at a very reasonable price. The backyard showed no sign that a tree had been taken down. I would recommend his work to anyone.

We recently hired Ivan to build a stone walk way and to re-grade our backyard, replace existing dirt and grass with sod. Ivan is absolutely the best landscaper I’ve ever worked with and has completely transformed our backyard! We’ve had our fair share of landscapers come in, unable to meet our standards. However, this was not the case with Ivan. Ivan is unlike anyone we’ve ever worked with and you can certainly tell that he loves what he does and that he is proud of his work. Ivan showed up on time to provide a consultation, and was quick to provide a clear and detailed estimate. Ivan and his guys started our work the next day. They were early, courteous and extremely professional. Ivan’s work is impecable, methodical, neat, measured and outright impressive! Ivan himself is extremely professional, personable and works hard to understand your vision; always asking questions, ensuring throughout the project that it is turning out the way we wanted and that we were satisfied, giving clear direction to his team. Ivan delivered the job on-time and delivered within scope and budget. We can’t wait to enjoy our outdoor living space this summer! I would highly recommend Ivan and his team for any and all future landscaping projects and have already committed to working with him to fence our yard and to put in a second walkway!!

Our experience with Perfect Curb was outstanding. Dane White, the owner has extensive experience and was great at sharing ideas about how to design our patio. We looked at two other companies, but pretty much from the beginning of our conversation with Dane we knew who we wanted to do the job. Great finished product and the follow up was exceptional. Big fan of Perfect Curb and I would highly recommend them. Tim Berger Coventry CT

I have to say KAPO construction is the way to go! I just purchased a house in CT and I wanted to fix the outdoor patio since it wasn’t fixed when I bought the house. The owner of KAPo construction is super friendly and replied to my emails quickly. You can tell he truly cares about his customers. I loved the work they did in my backyard! Definitely will recommend them to friends and family!!! They made my dream patio come true!

We first hired Simple Stone in Summer 2017 just to do a walkway around our house. The work was so carefully, artistically & expertly done, and Edgael & Nicky were exceptionally kind, honest and hardworking, that I knew we would hire them for more jobs on our home renovation. They did a beautiful job designing & installing stone veneers on the front of our home, and have branched out into regular yard & garden service for us, including snow removal and landscape design. Simply put, they are THE BEST.

Landscape Design & Garden Installation: “After living in our house for nearly 3 years we decided it was time to make some upgrades to the landscaping. By chance, we attended the Stamford Home Show in March and collected information from numerous landscapers. We followed up with a few and interviewed them at our house. All had years of experience and some good ideas but no one took the time and care to listen to what we wanted and come up with the kind of detailed and beautiful design that Denise Martin of AJM Earth did. From the first moment, it was obvious that Denise and Joe Martin not only offered a full service package of landscape design, hard scape design, execution and maintenance, but that no client was too small or unimportant. The other vendors could barely be bothered with us unless we would shell out a lot of money before even getting to know what their design plans would be. Unlike the other vendors, the Martins were never too busy to answer phone calls, emails, and texts right away. They lavished us with time and attention every step of the way. It was clear from the outset who had presented us with the best designs and who would provide the kind of customer service we needed. Throughout the process we were amazed at the attention we got. We can’t imagine any other landscaper spending as much time with us, being as available as Denise was, or taking the care with our property as if it were her own to get everything just right. Whenever there were unforeseen challenges along the way, Denise persevered, day and night, to make sure that the design was executed as promised. She always made us feel that our project was her passion. Cars slow down now as they drive by to take in the lushness of the landscaping. People who walk by stop to tell us how beautiful the garden is. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the landscaping. It is truly breathtaking! We can’t imagine working with a more talented, dedicated, patient, and kind landscaper. Clearly, we made the right choice.” Stephen Stamford, CT

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
