Do not hesitate to hire G&M! Mario and crew are friendly, courteous, prompt and hard working. Price was very fair for tree and shrub trimming. They cleaned up thoroughly, too. My yard looks so much better and the tree limbs are now off my roof..

Elena is an extremely knowledgeable and diligent botanist. She and her assistants turned over extremely overgrown garden into a peaceful haven in the course of a couple of days! In addition to her amazing work, Elena is also eager to teach homeowners how to care for their plants and trees, and even brought us some of her soil from Rhode Island to enhance the livelihood of our rose bushes. Elena also helped me to begin to decorate my front porch with potted plants which included meeting me at a nursery to choose the plant arrangements, pottery vases, and soil, and then she eturned to my home to assemble them. All of her work is done with great care and respect for the plants, and she charges a very reasonable rate (unlike many other landscapers.) Elena was a tremendous help and she has a true love of plants and gardening as well as a strong work ethic and a desire to make her clients happy! Thank you so much, Elena! We will definitely continue to use your services.

I reached out to RG on a Friday night and by Sunday evening the work was done. Super fast response and the price he gave me for the work to be done was excellent. The work performed was well beyond my expectations. In fact, after watching them work in my yard for the better part of the day,I decided that I was going to pay them more than the original quote. I also asked them for a quote to build us some natural steps into a slope that we had in the yard. And his response was he would do it and we would just pay him what we thought it was worth. It was really nice to get that level of trust. The stairs they installed look beautiful and were exactly what I was looking for. They also ended up re-using some of the wood that they had cut down in my yard to create them to avoid the need for any materials. Very creative :-). I would definitely hire them again for any tree or outdoor landscape work we need to have done!

Lamb's Tree/Plant health care did an excellent job, finished on time, and was very professional. Glen and his crew took down 13 + trees and a handful of limbs throughout my property. They took the time to cut, stack, and clean up afterward. Price was very reasonable. I would highly recommend Lamb's Tree/Plant health care and plan on using his service again in the near future. Jason came out in a few days to provide an estimate and when I was ready I called and he came within a week. I had several stumps to grind from a grouping of bushes and trees taken down and also another bush to remove and grind the stump. All was done in about an hour and they left both areas clean. Job done was excellent. I would strongly recommend Jason and will definately use him in the future if I need him.

Nathan and crew did a great job taking down 10 trees in our backyard. They were able to take apart and reassemble our fence in order to get back there and the fence was no worse for the wear. Initially it was scoped as a 2-day job, but they were able to complete in 1. Very happy with the job they did and would recommend to anyone. In terms of price, Nathan worked with us to offer a competitive quote. That in conjunction with my gut feeling that he was a good guy, led us to choose CT Green.

After foot surgery I asked my wife to see about contracting a service to mow our nearly 1 acre lawn. All Seasons had the lawn mowed and trimmed before others were willing to even come out and do estimates. We were very pleased with the work and the way our trees were not scarred during trimming.

Matt and his team were hired to clean the gutters at my mother's home. As a retired widow and wonderful woman of a certain age, my mother was anxious about hiring a contractor on her own because my father had managed home repair/improvement. Since he died, many home maintenance jobs have not been done - especially the gutters. Matt came to her home and was very kind and thorough when providing an estimate. I appreciated that he took the time to look at the gutters because it gave my mother the comfort that he could be trusted because he "didn't pull a figure out of the air" (mom's quote). On the day of the job, Matt arrived with his team of three and introduced them to my mother. The men were timely, very friendly and thorough. The gutters were bad - 4" of cement-like build up with little saplings growing out of it! The guys got rid of it in an hour. The experience was excellent. I recommend Matt and, if my mom used a computer, she would post a recommendation too!

Shane responded to my Thumbtack request immediately. The first company I had dealt with before using Thumbtack, from which I received an estimate weeks prior, kept putting off scheduling my work. They came to do the job exactly the day after they heard the disappointment in my voice during my last phone call to them. I then was not able to use Shane’s services. He had sent me a professional initial estimate which was on target according to my description of the job. He was eager to see photos of my fallen tree so he could fine tune the cost. He was personable to speak with and very gracious when I told him my job had been taken care of after all. I would request his services in the future if need be.

Denise Martin and AJM Earth – an incredibly effective small landscape team – have given me back the garden started 25 years ago and all but lost of late to benign neglect and some overly successful Sea Oats. The combination of horticultural and excavation experience was just what this project needed. My initial inquiry was answered right away and we met to survey the “garden” just a few days later. This fact alone is telling of how very professional, organized, and responsive AJM Earth is. Denise and her husband Joe, as well as third team member Carlos, were great about listening to what I wanted as well as suggesting innovative solutions for what else was needed – and then delivering on schedule and on budget. In late September, the heavy equipment rolled in and all the overgrown beds were “grubbed out”, large stone steps were assembled to my exacting specs, and an amazing Gabion basket wall (one of those innovative suggestions) now permanently shores up an old wood retaining wall. Finally, a back yard screening border was planted with some of my favorite trees and shrubs. All this was accomplished by the team of three who seem to do the work of ten. And do it happily! Whatever your landscaping goal, whether you have no fixed notion or, like me, know what you want but need a ton of help to achieve it, Denise and her team are the ones to call. You will be as impressed and delighted as I am. December 2017

I used Truelove Outdoor Services for a tree and stump removal. Holden worked around my schedule to make an appointment to look at the tree in question and gave me an affordable price. Looking at my yard, you would never know there once stood an ugly dying oak tree, as he removed the stump and took all the unwanted wood and cleaned up any traces that he was even there! I would highly recommend his service to anyone looking for any tree service or excavation!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
