Walter came in as a last minute save the day contractor. He is a general contractor licensed and insured and came to fix mistakes of another contractor and fix my faucets install. He ended up doing an amazing job and added a sealer to my carrera marble vanity. I am using him again for my next project. He does what he says he will, sticks to price and exceeds expectations. NICE GUY overall. Don't look further!

I hired Bob (A&B Home Expert) to do a challenging fence repair right after a snow/sleet storm. This just wasn't a regular repair because it was on a slop, snow had built up and then became a frozen sheet of ice and the fallen section pulled down the post. Bob came the day after I was contacted so that was a big plus because I have a dog that could have run away threw the fallen section. Bob completed the job with expertise! Did a fantastic job in a very timely fashion. I would strongly recommend him to anyone! I will be using Bob on future projects! As a side note, Thumbtack is a great way to make contact with local contractors. I had a great experience using Thumbtack!

We hired Sonny for painting, kitchen & laundry room renovations. He is very friendly, professional and his work is outstanding. His prices are very reasonable. I had lot of work done in past few years in and around the house including in ground pool and I am happy to say that Sonny is the best contractor I ever had. His crew is as good as him, specially Jonathan did excellent job in molding and kitchen backsplash. Finding a right contractor is never a easy job but now that I found Sonny I will be calling him for all my future projects.

Rome and his guys were great. We originally planned on only doing a couple things, and after seeing the quality of the work on stair repair and popcorn removal, we also had hardwood flooring installed, drywall replaced and tiling done. The work Johnny, Reuben, Jesus and the other guys did was beautiful and the prices Rome gave us were very reasonable. I would recommend him and his guys to anyone looking to get professional quality work done to their home.

I contacted Spirit Contracting to redo a renovation of my bathroom, after another contractor, who I contracted via Thumbtack, did a horrendous job. Frankie was early to the appointment, patient, went thru the entire job that was completed and advised what needed to be redone. They did an amazing job getting my bathroom completed! I cannot believe the difference!! Spirit Contracting is the way to go!! They were professional, punctual, clean and great to work with. Frankie is honest and pays attention to the littlest details and stands behind his work 1000%. I would most definitely recommend this company and plan on using their services in the future!

As an Architectural Designer, I look to hire professionals who execute with the same high standards as myself. I interviewed and met other so called professionals as I am looking to build a strong team in Westchester who can carry out my designs to the finite detail. Carlos and his team not only take pride in their work, they deliver the job above and beyond what is expected. Carlos, from the onset, will protect the site to insure no damage is done to furnishings and flooring ( very impt step). He and his team work neatly, efficiently, and detailed. They also clean up during and after ! Carlos communicates effectively on every aspect- not only with me but the homeowner. He can be trusted to work alone in the home. When one of my contractors did not work out, Carlo offered me other trade professionals to help complete the entire scope within the allocated budget and who possess the same work ethic. I will stand behind Carlo Gamboa and his team as professionals in their field of expertise and continue to hire him for my clients!

I recently had Dimension Contractors come in to do a kitchen and bathroom In my home after a heat pipe burst. Needless to say it was a very stressful time for our family and Dimension Consulting Contractors made the whole process very pleasant. From their initial emergency response visit to fix the pipe and remove the damaged areas to the very end of the reconstruction everything went as smooth as I could have asked for! The entire team at Dimension was awesome to us and we couldn’t have asked for anything more. Would definitely recommend them to anyone needing work done on their home or place of business!

We needed a total bathroom renovation and fast! Irving and his crew from Jerry & Carr were the first to respond on thumbtack, showing up that day to give us a fair and affordable estimate. They started a couple days later and did an a beautiful job. The bathroom looks amazing! They were quick, thorough and didn't leave a mess like most contractors. They were a pleasure to work with from start to finish! I HIGHLY recommend them!

PM Drywall in two words: Fantastic work! We are trying to sell our house and move south. We had a leaking roof with 4 areas with very large drywall repair needs.Pedro repaired these areas, and many other dings, furniture dents, cat scratches, etc. that we pointed out. He also repaired raised drywall seams and other problems we did not notice. The end results were smooth, perfect ceilings and walls! Professional work, pleasant gentleman, great cleanup, at a fair price. I would not hesitate, nor would I call for other estimates, to recommend PM Drywall. They also do interior and exterior painting, probably with the same quality.

Michael did an amazing job fixing up various projects around our house. He was very fair in his estimate and even finished all the jobs quicker than anticipated. I definitely hope to use his services again in the near future. I've used other contractors in the past but none match his level of detail and responsiveness.

I had explored many different contractors that were referred and I found through various search engines. I decided on Michael because he had so many photos and he was in a lot of them working. Michael made sure we both understood each other in regards to my composite deck project. Upon delivery of materials, he was here, and had Hime Depot resolve a problem within hours. Although the weather was blistering hot he did not reschedule. He utilized shade from a tree and placed a canopy over the work area. He was meticulous, used time well, and left my yard clean of building debris. I have already passed his number along! Thank you, Michael :-)

Great follow thru. Explained every aspect of work being done. Professional without the Hamptons pricing. Had 4 other quotes with an average of 10 to 25% higher. Started job on time and finished earlier then quoted.. to my surprise. Most contractors fudge time just to get the job. You will be very happy if you decide to use him. Provided insurance info at first meeting. Left site spotless and personally inspected.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
