Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the most common type of heating system?

The most common type of home heating system is a forced-air heating and cooling system. This type of heater involves a furnace, which is commonly powered by natural gas, forcing air through a series of ducts that distribute the hot air through different rooms in a house. Furnaces can run on other types of fuel, including electricity, propane and oil. This type of heating system is quite popular because it doubles as a path for air conditioning in the summer.

What is the most efficient heating system for a house?

Geothermal heating tends to be the most efficient way to heat a house when compared to traditional HVAC systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground-source heat pumps) transfer energy to and from the ground to supply heat, cool air and hot water.

Note that one of the most important ways to boost efficiency, save electricity and lower your heating bills is to make sure your house is weather-tight and well-insulated.

Why is my air conditioner leaking water?

An air conditioner leaking inside the house is a common problem. It could indicate that the air filter is dirty. Or, one of the following may be the culprit:

  • Clogged condensate drain line
  • Leaky, damaged, cracked or rusted drain pan
  • Dirty or broken coils
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Broken condensate pump
  • Not enough refrigerant
  • Disconnected drain line

If your AC is leaking, contact a repair service to find out what the problem is — and how much it will cost to fix it.

How much does it cost to install a heating system?

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Does an HVAC technician need to enter my home?

Because most HVAC systems are located in the home, it’s likely that an HVAC technician would need to enter yours when working on the projects. However, there might be exceptions. Some HVAC systems are located in garages or in areas of the house that are sectioned off. During the consultation, ask your technician if they'll need to enter your home.

When you contact local technicians, ask if they’ll perform a video call in place of a traditional consultation. Be sure to send all materials like photos and documents digitally, and comply with all relevant guidelines.

Do HVAC technicians offer remote or virtual services?

Because HVAC technicians need to be physically present to do their work, they have not conventionally offered remote or virtual services. However, with the importance of social distancing due to COVID-19, the need for remote capabilities is greater than ever. If you come across a profile that states the HVAC technician or AC professional is offering remote services, message the pro to find out what those services include.

Consult with your technician to see if the technician will be able to perform a video call consultation. You can find local technicians near you by searching online.

How long does it take to install a new heating system?

A new heating system generally takes a few days to install. Jobs that require new ductwork will take more time. And switching to a different type of heat fuel — propane, natural gas, oil or electricity — may require longer installation times as well, as they could require routing piping, regulators and other adjustments to your home.

Roberto conducted routine inspection and did general maintenance on my HVAC system after another contractor had to remove it and reinstall it. I hired Integrity as a second opinion. He was professional, communicative, punctual and knowledgeable about the HVAC unit.

The task at hand was a difficult one. Our return vent was full of debris that was causing our HVAC to shut off constantly. We’ve had multiple contractors give us different solutions but Julian figured out how to remove the debris safely and get our system back to proper function. His diligence and savvy saved us tons of money on having to replace the system. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs HVAC repair.

In my opinion Kevin Creel is simply the contact you want to have for your HVAC issues. Tremendously impressed with him and his expertise. I request service on a Burnham boiler/furnace. I made contact with referral from Thumbtack. That gentleman started out well, explaining to me a CO problem that necessitated buying a brand new boiler. He also mentioned the part that was bad. He never suggested getting into the boiler to thoroughly clean it out of the rust and debris. Then when I was ready to purchase the part that he diagnosed as the issue he still attempted to move me to simply purchase a new boiler. I then called Mr. Creel at Climate Pro and explained my situation and that I did not want to get a new boiler. Mr. Creel explained what he could do and that he would come out. Mr. Creel looked at the boiler, explained to me in terms that I could understand and then proceeded to do what no other contractor was willing to do. He told me he believes that it would not be a problem to get the boiler up and running. The boiler had not been cleaned in many years. He explained to me that the cleaning he would do should take place every 3 or 4 years. Mr. Creel then removed the rusted top, exposing the inside of the boiler. He then explained to me that while the boiler is old and rusty it simply needs a thorough cleaning. He showed me how the rust was causing the CO problem in the area of the boiler and that the boiler needs to be cleaned out to allow the flames to go up in the boiler and the gas to go through the vent pipe. He brought in his tools and began to clean the entire inside of the boiler out and remove the rust and debris. He then put the boiler back together, he bled the radiators throughout the house, and then fired the boiler up and it works wonderfully! Mr. Creel then thoroughly cleaned up the area around the boiler! I could not be more impressed with his expertise, professionalism and honesty. I understand that contractors are in the business to make money but Mr. Creel's integrity does not allow him to take advantage of a customer who is at their wits end! Thank you Climate Pro! Thank you Kevin Creel! Continued business success and happy customers like me.
