Introduction: Rob Williams is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Certified Group Psychotherapist and the founder of Aida Therapy. Rob offers individual and group psychotherapy for adults and couples and on-going programs in spirituality and mindfulness. With a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and two Master's degrees, in Business Administration and Social Work, Rob has experience in public, private, and non-profit organizations and he now brings together his psychological acumen, business experience, mindful awareness, and multicultural sensitivity in his Dupont Circle therapy. Rob specializes in helping people with life transitions, addictions, relationship issues, anxiety & mood dysregulation, and LGBT issues. Psychotherapy is the reconnection with the real you through patient, compassionate, mindful inquiry and attention. Assumptions and beliefs about yourself, others and the world, are questioned. Emotions that you may be unaware of are brought to conscious awareness, where they can be felt and finally released. There is tremendous healing in being witnessed and seen for who you really are, without any judgment or criticism. As you begin to feel better about yourself, possible solutions to your problems become more obvious.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am required to have 20 hours of continuing education per year to maintain my license. Typically, I am attending 80-100 hours of educational seminars, workshops, and experiential training in any given year to stay abreast of all the developments in the field and to hone my skills. My website also lists the professional presentations that I have made: aida-therapy.com/about/aboutrw.html

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Take the time to choose the right therapist for you. I think there are three main things to look for in a therapist: Licensing, Proficiency and Chemistry. Licensing: Check with your state or local licensing board to ensure the practitioner has a license to practice psychotherapy. I practice with an LICSW license from the District of Columbia. This means that I have achieved the highest level of licensing available and may practice independently. Proficiency: Every licensed provider has demonstrated a minimum level of education and experience, according to state standards. Most therapists also have areas in which they specialize. You will want to ask your potential therapist about the status of her/his license, her/his experience and approach to treating your particular problem or issue. Chemistry: Once you feel satisfied that your therapist has the right expertise, then it becomes a matter of “fit” between yourself and your therapist. Some questions you might want to ask yourself are: Do I feel comfortable sharing my thoughts? Are they attentive to what I am saying? Are they responsive to my phone calls and requests for information or documentation? Do I feel like I am getting what I need?
