Introduction: I work from the heart of all religions -- the wisdom tradition which each religion contains -- and therefore am open to them all. I have an affinity for those who are "spiritual but not religious" as well. In addition to leading and officiating ceremonies such as weddings and memorial services, I teach meditation and contemplative practice: including basic physical practices that enhance awareness and physical well-being. In addition to my training at interfaith seminary, I work from the perspective that is now called "inter-spiritual." Ceremonies and rituals of all kinds, for me, must not be rote: they must have heart. Being present with individuals, families, partners and groups who are about to embark on a new path, to grow and to potentially bloom.

The Rose & The Lotus should be read by any serious student of the mystical wisdom paths. The author does a superb job of introducing concepts of comparison between two seemingly unrelated traditions. While always acknowledging that Sufism and Buddhism come from different places and times he gets to the heart of the matter as he discusses the similarities in each path toward enlightenment. The subtle message that the author presents is that the underlying mysticism of two seemingly disparate religious traditions may be more similar than is usually considered. The language in this book is refreshingly simple and straight forward unlike many books on mysticism and the wisdom traditions. As an added bonus he includes interviews with leading figures in both traditions. Overall for a work of relatively short length, this book packs a big punch in elucidating a subject seldom dealt with in this way. It will be an important contribution to the interfaith community in general but especially to those wishing to go deeper into the interfaith aspects of mysticism. Rev. John A. Yoegel PhD, DMin Dean, The New Seminary for Interfaith Studies.

Joe is a very literate and experienced scholar. So he can provide theoretical and historical backgrounds as well as practical excercises and rituals, which enable the students to approach their inner spiritual reality and the common heritage we share. Especially thrilling was his method to transport archetypical psychic or human patterns and situations to scenic work, thereby using modern techniques side by side with elements taken from ancient mysteries. Joe is a very sensitive and at the same time clearly structured group leader, who can lead also heterogeneos groups through rational and non verbal processes. He is not easily disturbed by questions from different contexts and can make clear, where his knowledge comes from and admit where it ends.

I was a student in Joe's acting class at an international theater festival in Germany. The combination of a very well structured class using advanced didactic techniques and a deeply spiritual space created by Joe gave participants the great possibility of encountering new spaces in themselves - being individual and creative on a very structured base of Joe's class. It was for 3,5 years ago, but I remember lessons taught until now with crystal clarity and can apply them to both my stage work and daily life. Furthermore, Joe is inspired by what class participants are inventing and integrates those inventions immediately into the teaching process. Also as a participant of his class, you feel that Joe understands completely who you are, accepts you in a way you are and respects all aspects of your personality, which frees a lot of creative energy - it's like individual spiritual "appliance" in a group.

Joe Daoud Martin was several times guest teacher at our El Haddawi International Winter School in Bavaria/ South Germany and at other cccasions. His qualitiy as a teacher and also as a spiritual adviser was outstanding. Joe is extremely knowledgale about various spiritual tradition and has the sensitivity and delicacy to draw on them in his work without being fanatic or having a missionary approach. To my opinion he is a perfect person to serve communities as an interfaith minister.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

My own spiritual practice: I decided to do what I could to invest the lives of others with spirit; and to help them shape spiritual progress in their lives.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Have an initial meeting or conversation before committing to anything, including weddings! (The Dalai Lama recommends that before one takes a spiritual guide, "Spy on them first!" Of course that is not always practical, but trust is important.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

We often think we are defined and divided by our belief systems. This is never necessarily true.
