Tony installed a 50 in TV wall mount for my condo. He was prompt and very accommodating. Tony was responsive from the beginning until the job was completed. I would recommend Tony to everyone and will not hesitate to hire him again for my future general contracting needs.

Glenn has seriously turned out to be the absolute best contractor that I have ever worked with! Ive had the opportunity to work with several others, both at my homes and at my businesses. A few contractors have been good, doing nice work for a fair price, but they were either too slow, too unreliable, or just couldn’t come up with creative ways to do things that were needed. Glenn completely remodeled a new salon for me, and built a custom color bar shelf, front desk, reclaimed beam stylist counter, and retail shelves. He worked with my budget, helping me make decisions based on the priorities, and was extremely friendly, professional, and reliable every step of the way. He went above and beyond, even facetiming with me or communicating with my husband when I was under the weather and couldn’t make it to the job site. I highly recommend him for any project, and will be using his services for every future project that I have, both in business and my home.

We were very happy with Tom. He was the only contractor that responded to us after calling 5 contractors. He repaired a crumbled step in 90 degree weather and did a great job. Would highly recommend.

I hired Kevin to help do some wiring, framing, and drywall so I would be able to mount a tv in a difficult location. He was very knowledgeable and was able to find some creative ways to get around a few unexpected problems he encountered once the wall was opened up. Another contractor I had come to look at the project told me it was no possible and left but now the job is done and my tv looks great with no wires showing.

David has done a couple of jobs for my husband and I. He took the pieces of an old deck and built another patio deck using the existing materials. I’ve come to love the work that David does and he is now my general contractor for any work I need done around my house! I would use David over and over again and I recommend him to others.

Joe was amazing! First of all, he responded to my request right away to replace my kitchen faucet. I was very impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Then, I was surprised by how quickly he was able to do the work. He would have come later on the same day, but I was not available so we scheduled it for the following day in the morning. He arrived promptly at the time we set up and he came prepared to complete the job with the new kitchen faucet that I selected in hand. He was very courteous and friendly and I was able to tell that he takes great pride in his workmanship. If you want quality work done at a very reasonable price, I highly recommend him and I will utilize his services from now on. It is very rare these days to find a contractor that is responsive and cares about the quality of his work.

We needed some trim work done to cover a settlement crack along a tray ceiling that I had not been able to repair. I posted the request on Thumbtack and got a few replies with hourly rates. I contacted a couple of the contractors because I wanted to get more than an hourly cost to do the work. I described the scope of the work to each contractor and said that I wanted to get a more concrete estimate. Joe Valentino of Valentino Construction and Design estimated the job would take about 3 hours to do. I agreed on the hourly rate, and I told him I would get the material and prime and paint the wood to be ready for him. We agreed on a date. Due to circumstances beyond our control that both Joe and I had, the work got delayed by about a month. Finally, a date was set. Joe said he would get the wood and prime it. I agreed. Joe and his helper showed up at the appointed time and got to work. They were meticulous in their work. Furniture was covered or moved and tarps were laid over the carpeting. Four hours later the work was done. Beautifully, I may add. The trim work was done and Joe had even given it a couple of coats of paint to finish it. Both my wife and I loved it. They cleaned up and vacuumed the carpets. Furniture was put back in place. I asked Joe what the cost would be. He told me that we had agreed to the three hours of labor and the cost of materials so that would be it. Fantastic I thought; a man of his word. I would highly recommend Valentino Construction and Design to anyone needing carpentry work. They are friendly, do great work and are reasonable with their pricing. I give them 5 stars!

I would like to commend Alex for his responsiveness and workmanship! He was hired to complete work left uncompleted by another contractor. Most contractors are not willing to do this. Due to an error in cabinetry on my end, he was willing to adjust his schedule and come back two laters later (allowing me time to purchase the correct cabinet) and complete the job even though it was my error that caused the delay. On the second day, he installed the correct cabinet and completed additional unfinished work left by the defaulted contractor which was not even in our original agreement. He made suggestions for (and installed) baseboard molding in a sun porch, which my client loved. He also made other suggestions to assist my client with a window seat that she was self-performing. There is still finished carpentry work remaining that needs to be performed towards the end of the project and I will definitely be calling Alex to provide those services!

Will's Home Remodeling was the general contractor for my major residential renovation at 183Jordan Road in Somers Point NJ. The project took about 4 months to complete where we completely gutted and renovated this badly damaged home that sat vacant for over 5 years. This was a $100k+ renovation for total labor and materials and Will and his team were the glue that kept the project on track and within budget. Will and his team personally completed all new vinyl siding, all new windows, new roofing, new gutters, new insulation, several new walls, stucco and cement repair, new stair steps, bathroom and shower and back splash and accent tile work, kitchen cabinet installation, wall board, spackling, caulking, trim work, door frames, shower doors and many miscellaneous requests. Will partnered well with some challenging subcontractors in the areas of plumbing, electrical, outside concrete, flooring and granite counter top installation. When the other subcontractors dropped the ball, Will was always there with a creative solution and to help get them back on task. I would definitely hire Wills Home Remodeling for my next project.

I needed my range hood replaced & I wanted it vented outside the home. Tim & co-worker Rich were meticulous from start to finish. Two cabinets had to come out so the hood would fit properly. They were removed, the crown molding was cut & replaced. Everything looks great! Two of the nicest contractors I've ever met. If you want quality workmanship, a job done right, you need to make a call...but hurry. I've got a feeling their going to be very busy:-)

Not only did I receive a quote quickly, but all the responses to my questions came fast as well. At the end of the job, the last step requires you to go back through the following 7 steps to add something optional that would improve the integrity of my gazebo. Without hesitation, he went back all 7 steps and did the job to perfection. Many contractors would have thrown away the parts, collected their money and left. Not here! I will recommend to Family and friends and hope I can find another project to leverage them. Thanks again!

After a decade in business, we've gone through many contractors and handymen and you get what you pay for. That's not always good. In this case, you get more than what you pay for. We couldn't be happier with the quality of work! Plus, they they ask for my input when we run into problems we didn't expect to encounter on a project. We look forward to future work with Philadelphia Local Handyman. Worth every penny.

We met Mr Lee over six months ago when he was assisting the contractor we hired to renovate two bathrooms. The contractor left us high and dry with one bath completed and the other about 2/3 completed. Mr Lee has been gracious enough to help finish the job. Mr Lee has been the saving grace for this seeming endless reno. His knowledge and expertise have rescued the job. His work ethic is admirable. He comes when he says he will, does what he says he will do, cleans up after, and doesn't let the cat out.

My new home needed repairs. All outside work. I knew an overabundance of patients would be required. Especially with winter coming. I have never hired a general contractor before. As a journeyman machinist I have worked for enough master craftsman to tell who is reputable. John is highly knowledgeable, polite, and thorough. He helped me determine the scope of the project and tailored it to meet my needs and budget. I knew I was paying for a finished project at a fixed price. How John allocated his time and resources didn’t concern me. He kept me informed of deliveries and when the next phase of the project would begin. I am very pleased with the work he has done and would recommend him to anyone. And look forward to working with him again.

We hired GCI to update our entire house , from the cellar to the third floor. New rugs , floors, paint, new bathroom and kitchen and a total clean up for the entire house. Updates were made to the plumbing and electrical systems. Perry and his crew were excellent. They showed up every day on time, they were respectful and kind to my entire family. They did beautiful work. Perry was always available to talk to with any questions. The crew worked quickly and we trusted them 100 percent. I was reluctant to start such a large project but Perry and his crew were there for us from start to finish. They made our house a home and I will be forever grateful to them. They went above and beyond their duties every day. Our family has a better life and we couldn’t be happier with our new home . Thank You Perry and crew !!!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

Hello. , My name is Ms. Copeland. I need the very small addition to my house renovated. I'm not sure if this is within your scoop of skills or not. If so, I'm looking for someone who will inspect the space and give me an estimate. There is leakage from the roof. It may need patch work or the entire roof repaired. I would like the wood paneling removed, the walls insulated, and drywall installed. I also would like an interior door with a locked installed in the place of a doorway. I would like another doorway sealed off to prevent entry or exit. I need three old windows replaced as well as an exterior door. Possible electrical outlet replacements and light fixture. I would like wall to wall carpeting in place of the tile floor. The addition have a bathroom that I would like to be in good working condition. The pipe froze and burst under the tub. The pipes are exposed via the basement. Maybe they need to be insulated as well as repaired to prevent future damages. I believe that's all that's needed in the bathroom, besides being included in the roof repair. Maybe, small cosmetic work and an interior door or a pretty divider for privacy. I assume the ceiling is incorporated in the roof work. I also would like a flat screen mounted. I
