Luiz Alvarez was great to deal with. He was knowledgeable, prompt, communicated, personable and did an outstanding job switching out our 150 amp electric panel for a 220 panel. He and Nelson went above and beyond to complete the job to our satisfaction. Thank you Luiz and Nelson you both are great people with lots of intigrity. It was a pleasure working with you. If we ever need more work done, you will be who I call. God bless you and your company.

Derrick did a great job at a very reasonable price. Most important -- he recognized a major flaw in the current HVAC installation and proposed the best alternative solution, as confirmed by another expert.

Julio repaired and remounted a large, heavy pool house door. He went above and beyond by making a special trip to Lowes and also replacing rotted wood on the frame and readjusting the other doors so everything worked perfectly. He also fixed two interior doors in my home that were not closing properly and were not listed by me in the estimate. He took my electric dryer apart to check the belt and find the problem there. I am extremely happy with all his work and the time he took with my problems. Julio is a very personable individual, caring and friendly. I have no doubt I will use his services again.

Recently Paul transformed my old attic space into a beautiful master bedroom with an ensuite/bathroom which has a custom window built in! In addition, he added much needed storage space and a show stopping light fixture at the entrance! He is professional, knowledgeable and very creative. His skill level for plumbing, electrical and construction exceeds all expectations! I would highly recommend him for virtually any type of job for home or business. It is evident that he is a professional and takes pride in his work. You can definitely hire him with confidence! It's great to find someone who is so reliable and competent!!

Eddie and the guys did a fantastic job, and were able to handle a few curve balls (a row of pendant lights built for NASA...) The guys were prompt, courteous, and professional, which is refreshing. Eddie tackled every job we threw at him, from electric to plumbing to decorative with ease, so we were beyond pleased. Great overall experience for us!

Gentle Hands is the best, hands down!!! I had just bought a home and before moving in I needed some work done - laying new flooring, moving washer/dryer plumbing, vents, outlets, installing crown molding, installing tile molding, repairing dry wall, building shelves, changing out lights and fans, building cornices and hanging blinds, and more. They hit the trifecta - responded and completed the work quickly, they were skilled at their work and did a fantastic job on everything ,and the price way very fair. In addition, they provided really good design suggestions and cleaned up after themselves. They were a pleasure to work with in my home and I would not hesitate to use them again. These guys are the guys to call!

Dale took on a very challenging bathroom renovation (which is an understatement) for us in our 65 year old home. This job required expert plumbing, electrical, and carpentry skills as well as the ability to lay tile and install flooring. Dale is professional, reliable, punctual, honest, energetic, conscientious, and extremely hard-working. He likes to make sure a job is done the right way, and he attempts to complete tasks in a cost effective manner. I heartily recommend Dale for your handyman needs!!

Mike was very helpful and caring. He showed up on time, removed the old water heater and neatly and efficiently installed the new heater. The total price was very competitive with other companies I contacted. The heater itself was an AO Smith, an excellent water heater. I highly recommend this company.

Replacing a leaking water heater. Was on site on time and got the Job well done and in great professional ways. Pleasant and knowing his job. Had to resort to his technical skills to connect the exiting electrical wiring and cold/ hot pipes from the failing old 40-gallons tank to a shorter new tank. Unfortunately, the only minus was the use of an aluminum drain pan and concrete blocks in place of a single steel stand. This does not reflect well on the superb effort put in but in the end everything works great!!

Brad gave an estimate to do a small drywall repair and to build a new wall with a door to close off a den and make it a separate room. I hired Brad, and he showed up on time each day and stayed within his quote. Brad clearly has done a lot of work in construction and gave some good tips about where to put the door (he installed the jamb, door, and hardware), electrical, and on materials. Brad showed up on time and he took time at the end of each work day to explain to me what he had done and what he planned to do the next day. I definitely highly recommend him

Mr. Bill did a great job with my handyman to do list. We were getting our house ready to sell and our list included plumbing, drywall, painting, woodwork, electrical etc...He completed everything on the list and did more for no extra charge. His price was very reasonable compared to other estimates we received and completely trustworthy. We got an offer on our house (now under contract) within 3 days of Bill completing his work. Thanks Bill!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
