Bottom line: This guy knows what he's talking about and knows what he's doing. I thought my Walker Coon Hound was train- proof. Brian proved me wrong- my dog is getting more and more obedient after every session and he loves it. Clickr training with Brian works. I felt a wave of relief after the first session. Overall great 100 percent positive experience. Highly recommend.

I hired Cliff to help me with my service dog in training, and he was great! Always arrived on time, very professional, and my dog loved him. From teaching my dog how to walk next to my wheelchair, to touching up basic obedience, and helping build her confidence, Cliff gave us the tools we needed to succeed as a team. What I liked most was that he took his time to explain everything, wrote down detailed "homework" for the week for us to work on, and would stay after the hour session to answer any questions I had. He really cares about his clients. I would definitely recommend him!

After 5.5 years of living the carefree bachelor life, Kingsford and I took the plunge into adulthood and moved in with my super neat, no pets on the furniture girlfriend and her dog + 2 cats. It was time for a trainer. We as a family did the training at what has become our apartment and Jose took the time to answer any questions and go over background, dog mentality, etc. We learned a lot about what was going through Kingsford's mind and how best to train him accordingly, both in the apartment and on leash. It took mere moments to learn what Jose was explaining to us and the results have proven incredible. With 6 beings in a NYC studio apartment, we have all managed to live in harmony thanks to Jose's tips. Subsequent to the training, Kingsford had trouble refraining from urinating inside the building once we left the apartment unit. I sent Jose a text and he promptly got back to me and walked me through potential issues, some more dog mentality, and resolutions. I could not be more pleased or grateful with the training and follow up. Highly recommended!

Wendy is a peach! My "rescued dog" Hunter, a dachshund, is very skitish with people and other dogs, but from the moment Wendy walked into our home, Hunter received her as a friend! That in itself says a lot. After 6 weeks, we have now taken him, with Wendy's guidance, to the local dog park for the first time since we have had him, and maybe the first time in his life, and contrary to my worst fears, he was very well behaved, which I can only credit to Wendy's affectionate and patient dog (and people) training. I would highly recommend Puppy Dog Luv/Wendy Heller for training!

Mr. Otazo has been training my 8 month old (huge) puppy for about 4 weeks now, and I am so thankful for have coming across such a caring company as Atazo Animal Services is. I have met most of the employees and they are all so kind to Kane as well as I. Kane is very happy to have them around, he is not easy one and they have had all the patience in the world to help Kane become the best version of himself.

I have a blue Weimaraner who weighed 65 lbs by 1 year old. She had trouble with impulse control and constantly pulled when walking her. Every person and dog we encountered was her new BFF! I am petite and had trouble keeping her from jumping on passers by and from being dragged down the street. Brianna walked my dog and taught me techniques and gave me the tools to train my large puppy. It took a while to train my willful and high energy dog but I can now safely walk my full grown Weim, confident that we will enjoy our walk. Brianna is wonderful with animals, has a gift for working with dogs and training both the dog’s behavior and people on how to train their dog. Brianna is caring, knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. in my opinion, her fees are very affordable. She has also helped me through my dog’s skin rash issues by recommending skin remedies which have been helpful as I do not like giving her antibiotics. I cannot say enough good things about Brianna and highly recommend her. She has been my Dog Whisperer for the past 2 years!

I started working with Mona even before we got our dog, Belle. Mona helped us choose the right puppy for us to get us started on the right foot, and she helped us make a "puppy plan" so that things weren't so overwhelming for us as first-time dog owners. She even went shopping with us at the pet supply store to help us choose what would help us and what we wouldn't really need. And that was before the training even started! It just goes to show how dedicated Mona is to making sure that her clients and their dogs have positive, happy relationships - she thinks of every detail and helps with everything, even if it's above and beyond her job description. Her training was clear, at a good pace, and not too complicated. Belle really responded to her, and she explained everything to us in a way that made us understand Belle better, too. We've left Belle with Mona overnight and we were always confident that Belle was not only totally safe, but also having a fun time even if we couldn't be there with her. I'm only sorry we don't live in the same city as Mona anymore! But we all, including Belle, look forward to visiting her soon, and we recommend her services to all other animal lovers.

I adopted a one year old Boston Terrier mix who is extremely energetic. I forgot what it was like to have a young dog. Needless to say, I hired Kelly and have been so impressed. First of all, she is extremely professional, enjoyable, no nonsense and always punctual. She has a common sense approach to dog training and the results have been great. I would recommend her to anyone, as she has only proven to provide more than I ever thought I could get.

    About

I am the person who loves animals more than people. I do my job for my best furry friends. They are my passion in life. I love all breeds, shapes and sizes. I do not discriminate against any breed. I am a pit bull advocate and a mother. I am the person you can trust with your fur babies when you go out of town to care for your dogs (no other pets are excluded), birds, reptiles, kitties, horses, etc. I love what I do and have found that this is one of the many blessings and passions that come with caring for animals. Dogs are my passion. I am efficient in training as well. My title is "Pity Chick Sitter and Whisperer," but I love all breeds. I sit and train for all breeds, and I am almost half the price of having your best friend put in a cage at a boarding facility. I come to your home where your baby is most comfortable. I am a traveling pet sitter/trainer. Your next vacation or outing, business trip can now be stress-free. I always do a meet and greet to make sure that we all are a great fit. I have over eight years of vet tech experience and animal behavioral classes; therefore, I handle the "most difficult personalities" with ease! Wouldn't the world be a better place if our furry kiddos had the hearts and souls of people?

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
