Extremely fast! I needed an estimate for HVAC repairs and they immediately were willing to do it the same day or the next day. They had excellent communication. I got a call from one of their technicians who broke down in detail what was going on with the air handlers and what needed to be done, they even took excellent photos. I would recommend them to anyone!

Tom called us right away, set up an appointment was on time. He did an excellent job repairing the drywall and hole in the wall in our bathroom. He also repaired an electrical outlet and moved the outlet up a few inches.Tom was pleasant, professional, and a hard worker. Once he started the job, he worked until it was completed. I would trust and recommend Tom for future projects.

I had an urgent need for Art's services on a Saturday. He was very timely and reasonable. He could not get the part until Monday but made my repair first on his list and got us up and running while keeping his fee well under what he had estimated. I was extremely happy with Art's service and would recommend him to anyone who had a need.

Mark sent someone out for a free estimate when our ac froze. Turns out we needed a new AC, ours was old and not worth the cost to repair. We got a quote and it included duct sanitization and a UV light which was a great added value. We did get a few cheaper quotes but it didn't include these things or the 5 year labor warranty they offer so we went with CoolAir. Mark was very helpful throughout the process when I called him he always answered and he gave me the feeling I could trust him. The installation went well and we are now enjoying clean cool air.

Al promptly responded to my request on Thumbtack. He was able to come out to my home and assess the situation. He was the only vendor out of the 3 I had spoken to who offered to repair my equipment instead of suggesting me to replace it completely with brand new equipment which would have costed me 4-5x what I paid him. Al truly knows his stuff when it comes to Air Conditioners. He put some life back into my equipment and he is a godsend. I will keep my fingers crossed that the equipment continues to work for some time to come. He also provided warranty for the parts he used in the job. My only recommendation to those people who don’t know much about AC’s is to discuss the repair costs upfront with Al so you two are on the same page.

Quick response from owner for a major repair. The technician was great. He confirmed problem, ordered and installed part the same day. The part was under warranty and the labor fee was fair. I recommend this company for your AC work.

I had several plumbing and electric jobs from big to small and Michael Wright fixed them all in just a day and a half; exactly as promised and for the same price quoted. Some things I thought would need to be replaced, but Michael assured me they could be repaired at a fraction of the cost. That was good news. I highly recommend Michael and the Wright Group for the quality of work, the affordable service, and professionalism. I will definitely call the Wright Group again for two projects I have planned in the near future. Thank you, Michael!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts
