How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

After repeatedly failed attempts to contact and contract 4 other electricians, Jenray was the ONLY one who followed through in responding. The work was beyond our expectations completing every single concern and even found a few issues we were not aware of and corrected accordingly. We will NEVER rely on any other electrician.

What a wonderful work I received from Mr. Jones yesterday! Jones is great professional electrician that who cares about customers by responding so quickly to one’s needs. I took a chance of texting Jones to discuss my light fixtures’ installation because I was afraid and wondering by how much he was going to the job for me since I couldn’t afford high charge, but he gave me a reasonable labor charge, so I agreed and set up an appointment with him for the installation. Jones is excellent electrician with his words not like some others, he showed up on times without calling me he couldn’t make therefore, I am really appreciate his punctuation, professionalism, and responsiveness! The fee was affordable and reasonable, I will recommend Mr. Jones to other people! Continue of your great work, Jones! Thank you so much for your help!

Luis and Nelson showed up on time and were extremely professional, caring, humble guys that really took the time to assess the job and got right to work! They are extremely hard working, collaborative and did an AMAZING job! They really worked some magic on my kitchen and I am forever grateful :) They put in several hours to be sure everything was perfect before they left my home. I received a prompt message from the company. I responded and was told that he could come out the same day to complete the installation. He said that he could arrive by 4pm, but showed up at 3:30. This was perfect for me. We went over the job, and he quickly started working. He worked quickly, completing the first fan in about an hour. When we went to look at the second fan, he realized and pointed out that it was missing the blades and screws for the blades. This was my mistake as I hadn’t opened them prior to his arrival. He offered to take me over to a nearby Lowe’s to either find a new fan to put up or new blades. I decided to ask him to just put up the rest of our other fan without the blades. I asked him about putting up my own blades when they sent them out. He showed me step by step how to put them on later. He set me up for success, and set our household up for happiness. His offer to go with me to find a new fan goes beyond what I would normally expect from an electrician for hire. He was willing to be my consultant, and I would have trusted his advice based on his great knowledge. Your electrical work and home are in good hands with this company. Please hire them, as I know I will for future jobs.
