About this pro

How does your business stand out?

My work stands out from all the rest because of my innate ability to understand others at a much deeper level. I am unlike the traditional therapist who simply sits and listens without the offer of feedback. I take a proactive approach to healing and recovery and respectfully confront & guide my clients toward growth and a fulfilling lifestyle. I am proud to say that I am a Level 3 Gottman Method Couples Therapy trained psychologist. The Gottman Institute is the only program in the world who has compiled 40 years of research in the field of marriage and relationship counseling. I have been fortunate enough to train under the Gottmans and obtain the skills and tools for my clients to thrive in their relationships. When working with couples, they have the option of using the Gottman Relationship Checkup which will provide them with a 60-70 page analysis of their specific problem areas where, in turn, I am able to produce a treatment plan to meet the couples' specific needs. For all other clients (other than couples) - I take the time to listen, understand and genuinely care. I treat each client as a unique individual; by using other assessment tools, I also customize each client's treatment to their specific needs, lifestyle and circumstances rather than a textbook outline; my clients know I am authentic and empathetic; and I provide a safe, comfortable, homey, non-judgmental environment for them.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

My work is my passion and for that I am quite fortunate. This profession is what I was gifted to do. It is my life's calling and the best part of it is watching my clients/patients make changes that allow them to live life with newfound tools to manage the obstacles have been standing in their way of a peaceful existence. Watching them transform in front of my eyes is probably the most delightful and intrinsically rewarding aspect of my work.

Hi Rosie, Gosh, I would love to understand the reason for your review so I can improve myself. It concerns me that you feel this way after only a couple of appointments. As I am sure you realize, change happens gradually after couples attend regularly and learn skills necessary to enhance their relationships. I am truly sorry that I was unable to encourage your consistent and continued attendance in marital counseling. I wish the very best to both of you!

I highly recommend Dr. Susie. From the first session, I felt a great connection. Dr. Susie is not only wonderful listener, but also a brilliant advisor. She helped me peel back layers to understand not only how and why I was viewing a situation a certain way, but also how and why others might see it differently. After experiencing several disappointing therapy sessions with other psychologists, I am so grateful to have found Dr. Susie. She truly helped me develop a healthy perspective. I leave her office feeling unburdened, optimistic and empowered. I highly recommend her!

We chose Susie based on her initial, immediate response to us here. We trusted her as a mediator, safe haven, expected respect and confidentiality w a "professional" and wanted to use her expressed expertise on family and relationship counseling to help better us, at a very low point and she only made things worse. She took one side of a "story", not facts and ran on it ignorantly and gave direction to someone who was desperate for help, without facts on that decision. She burdened and hurt our family more and made us take backward steps, instead of any forward positive steps, which was the intention with spending our only $ extra dollars on therapy/life coaching. After weeks of therapy, the only thing I left with was, DO INTENSE RESEARCH, before you choose someone that you put your families safety into, for help. Not all therapists are helpful and truly do not have your families emotional and physical well being in mind, just because of their titles. When confronted, she was defensive and dishonest. This is my opinion, based on personal experiences w this relationship counselor.

Hello Jennifer, I am sincerely sorry you feel this way. It is most important to attend sessions more than twice to gain the benefits of couples therapy in order to grasp an understanding of the foundational problems in the relationship. Therapists can only provide proper counseling if and when: 1) both partners are ready and willing to work together; 2) are honest with themselves and their therapist; 3) desire the same outcome; 4) are willing to follow recommended homework assignments between sessions; and 5) attend appointments on a consistent basis. I wish you the very best of success in the future. Yours in good health, Dr. Susie

I am the parent of a young woman who receives counseling from Dr. Susie for an eating disorder. Dr. Mendelsohn, without a doubt, saved her life through her expert counseling, her compassion and humor. Dr. Susie was also very focused on working with the family throughout the entire process. She went far beyond my expectations in giving of herself and time to help my daughter in her recovery. I cannot recommend her highly enough for anyone facing the challenges of an eating disorder.

Dr. Susie was instrumental in my recovery from my eating disorder. As someone who suffered from an ED herself, she offers an incredibly unique perspective. She manages to be compassionate and empathetic with a touch of firmness that fosters an environment of accountability and support. Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I am a doctor of clinical and forensic psychology AND a certified coach practitioner. Patients can contact me for a free consultation to determine what type of service they need. If patients do not have insurance, I will discuss a reduction in my fees.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I meet with the client for an initial 90-minute consultation I take a full history to determine their needs - and then we get started by the next session. I typically provide "homework" in the first session for the client to complete to assist me in getting to know them quicker to save time and money in the long run.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Being a clinical psychologist required me to earn a 7-year degree as a doctor. With that said, I also earned TWO Master's degrees (one in Human relations and one in psychology). I have a double doctorate (clinical psychology and forensic psychology). I graduated all with distinction. Further, I have a certification as a coaching practitioner. I keep up with all continuing education and learn from the guru's in relationship counseling (Gottman Relationship Institute), addictions, eating disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, etc. I have my continuing educational courses listed in my websites.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I knew at a young age that this field was for me. I always empathized with people who were hurting and I realized that my brain had the capacity to reach a deeper understanding of the issues people were experiencing.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have vast experience working with clients/patients who struggle in their relationships. I am also an expert in the treatment of eating disorders which is the manifestation of problems with control - and struggle with other mental illness such as anxiety disorders (OCD, PTSD, panic, phobias, social phobia, generalized anxiety), addictions, and Mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder).
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
Too many to discuss. I am fond of every client I work with who takes this journey to improve/enhance their lives and is able to live life to its fullest. The couples who are on the verge of divorce who are able to put the pieces back together again - fall in love again - and live 'happily ever after' is what makes my dedicated work all worthwhile. With that said, it is true that some of my most successful cases are couples who have separated. I know, I know, that must sound quite awful! I utilize the Gottman Relationship Checkup (based on 40 years of research), a comprehensive relationship analysis, to learn about the depth of the underlying problems within and between the couple. I do not sugar coat anything when treating my clients. With all of my extensive training, if this analysis and my expertise tells me that this couple is more volatile than complimentary, I assist the couple in a formidable break-up - utilizing the appropriate and most effective tools at my disposal. I believe that as an expert, this is the best practice for a psychologist to use when working with couples - as it helps each individual become more healthy and live a more fulfilling lifestyle.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
My advice to all clients/patients looking to hire me is to be ready and willing to make significant changes in your life; be open-minded and willing to collaborate with me to meet their goals versus meeting my goals for them.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
I wish the public would contact me for a free phone consultation so I can discuss their issues at hand and help them understand the differences in my style compared to others' in my field. I have found that 100% of clients that have seen other therapists prior to seeing me have found my style has benefited them over and above any therapy they have had previously. My rates of recovery have superseded the national average in all areas.
