Had the pleasure of meeting John from Breathe Kleen Air this morning. He called and asked to come a little earlier as he had a full day. I was very happy to accommodate as I had things to do. He arrived promptly and started work immediately. He worked quickly and very efficiently. He was very knowledgeable and what he got from the roof dryer vent had been there for years!! He was in and out from cleaning our dryer vent in record time. He did an excellent job and I would definitely recommend Breathe Kleen Air.

I called Dignified Air Services and Fabian arrived within 2 hours. He fixed the problem and because of the age and condition of my AC unit, he advised me of other potential problems. Unfortunately, early the next morning, the unit failed again. After calling Dignified Air Services at 6:00am, Fabian arrived again within two hours and fixed the second issue. Fabian was knowledgeable, professional & friendly. When it comes time to upgrade to a new AC unit, I will definitely be calling Dignified Air Services. Thanks Fabian!!!

I had to replace my air conditioning system sooner or later. After getting estimates from three different contractors I decide it to call PSI. The salesman Polo, took a look at my old unit and collected several pictures, 15 minutes later he gave me a quote and it wasn’t the cheapest one, but let me tell you how happy I am for choosing this guys because they diid an amazing job and left my garage cleaner than they found it.

Elijah showed up a few minutes early, nice. We went over what I was interested in, which was a simple check of the refrigerant level. The air conditioner was working fine, but with the Florida heat, I wanted to make sure it had a full charge as I was not sure of who had been servicing it, or even if it had been serviced. He started with a system check methodically going through the various aspects of evaluation. He noticed a high head pressure and it was pulling amperage on the high side. He went inside the house and removed the covers on the indoor fan and began analyzing it. he did find the sensor was not properly connected to the doodad coming out of the TXV valve (my refrigeration is Aerospace related, but I get gist of it) he also checked the capacitor, the contactor, and other things. During this time he had the full set of gages hooked up to the AC unit outside so he could see the results of his actions. He reattached the sensor correctly, then monitored the system for about 15 minutes. The head pressure was now in the normal zone, all readings were normal and the amperage had dropped with the head pressure now where it should be. He also tidied up the insulation and inspected everything and compared his results against the specs, all was normal now. He was here for nearly two hours, working the entire time. He explained everything as he went, and when he was done, I was a happy customer. The cost was as we agreed to in the original quote, which was very fair. I found my AC contractor, his honesty, punctuality, integrity and fair pricing were refreshing. I would not hesitate to recommend him and his company to anyone looking for an honest and knowledgeable AC expert. He has all the appropriate licenses, certifications and is a good guy! Glad we found him!

My A/C unit was 12 years old and developed a freon leak. I called my "then" A/C company. They sent out a technician that quoted me a ridiculous troubleshooting price, and then an equally ridiculous A/C unit replacement price. Based on the age of the unit, I knew it was time to replace it and that spending the money to trouble shoot would be wasteful. I called Speedy to get a second quote. Dave responded very quickly and came out to look at our situation and provided a quote that was 34% lower than the other guy. These are the reasons I choose Speedy and will continue to have them as my A/C company. 1. Dave has years of experience in the industry. 2. Dave is a man of his word. - Because he could not install my new unit for a few days, he said he would get our existing unit to provide cooling until they could perfom the install...they did and free of charge. 3. They showed up for the install when they said they would be there. 4. Their prices are in line with what you would expect as reasonable. 5. They provide excellent financing options. 6. They treated our home with respect and ensured everything was as they found it before leaving. 7. They followed up after the install to ensure we were satisfied. Overall, they made a bad situation as good as it could be.

Elite Air conditioning went above and beyond fixing my a/c. Mr. Marcum is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He showed up right away and he took the time to explain everything and his prices were very very reasonable (much cheaper than others I have used and a much better experience). I will not hesitate to call Elite for any other a/c needs and will recommend to friends and family.

Thanks Airstar for the quick response time (even though it was after hours.) I received a call within a very short time after my posting and an appointment was scheduled between 9 and 11 the next morning. The tech called and showed up on time. The repair was made quickly and followup was great. Thanks for the great customer service!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
