I cannot say enough good things about Ehren and his business. He is professional. A gentleman. Hard-working. Service-oriented. His professionalism includes making sure he is licensed and insured, his positive attitude, good communication, honesty and promptness. We hired Ehren for "handyman" tasks around our house, but he can do much more. He has years of experience building houses. When he was handling tasks for us, he knew the details of what was behind the walls. There isn't anything he can't tackle. He did not hire sub-contractors. Ehren's labor estimate was "spot-on". We needed his assistance in estimating materials costs. He provided us w/ options and we ended up saving $1000 on materials. He works with another man, Paul. Paul is also a hard-working, pleasant gentleman. Both men are a pleasure to have around the house while they work. One of the jobs I hired Ehren to do was to replace a 4' wood fence w/ a 6' vinyl fence. I can't stress enough how hard working Ehren and Paul are. They didn't hesitate to work in the rain to get the job done. We had a hiccup w/ replacing a shower head and also an entry door. There were never any "sighs" or "rolling of the eyes" if something needed to be changed. Just the willingness to do the job the way we wanted it done and to go the extra mile [or hour] to make it happen. If I had questions in order to understand something, they were never impatient or defensive with me. Another advantage with Ehren - this is his full-time job. He started on a Monday morning and was finished in a week. We have already asked Ehren to provide another quote for a couple of extra items we want done. We also have plans to hire him in a few months when we make a few other improvements. We highly recommend Ehren for anything you need done around your house. Thank you! Sandra

Installation of attic access door/ladder. Steve did a great job at a very fair price. He left the area clean when finished and obviously is a gifted handy man. We already gave him another request for more work. He will permanently be in my Rolodex. I highly recommend Steve.

First off, I would like to start by saying that if you want a job done, Mr. Tivey is your guy. His dedication to fulfilling all aspects of the job, and performing the job professionally, is quite rare in comparison to other contractors that I have used in the past. He loves what he does, and he genuinely loves to see a job well done, and ultimately see a very happy homeowner. Mr. Tivey is approachable and very knowledgeable, he will guide you in decision making and will communicate very well all of your options and potential budgets for each project. He gives great advice, and will advise you on other projects in your home, even if it is a job that you plan to do yourself. He can do all types of work. He will hire sub-contractors if needed, but don’t worry, he will always roll up his sleeves and do the hard work himself if possible. He will bust his you know what to make sure you are satisfied. I have hired him twice, the first being a phenomenal job on cutting through a concrete wall in my attached garage, to add a door leading to my kitchen. The second job was adding a central heat/air vent to a room that did not have a vent at all. I know neither of those jobs sound very big, but trust me they were very complicated and detailed jobs, and Mr. Tivey did a fantastic job. I highly recommend him due to his commitment, great work ethic, and the fact that he will be fair to the customer in all phases of planning, and performance of the job. The greatest testament of his character is that during the above mentioned door job, my kitchen floor was damaged. Upon his own discovery of the damage, he immediately began planning to lay down new replacement planks, and repaired my floor with no additional charge, all with no griping required from me. I'd like to see another contractor do that! I plan to continue using Mr. Tivey for all of my home needs. Trust me, if you are reading this, and are trying to make a decision on a contractor, let this review and the many other great reviews he has received, seal the deal! Hire him today!

Direct Movement Group exceeded all the expectations I had when hiring a contractor. First and foremost, the quality of work performed was remarkable. The outcome of our project left us assured that we chose the right company. Their ability to take our ideas and combine them with their own unique touches to create the space we were looking for was very impressive. They make sure to pay attention to details and if an issue arose they were able to work around it with diligence and ease. They make an obvious effort to show you that they care about your project on a personal level. I recommend Direct Movement Group to anyone who wants a personable experience with an end result that is sure to impress.

I'd recommend Reggi for any tile job. He just finished our kitchen backsplash- 50 sq fr. I called him Tuesday, he came by for an estimate Wednesday, was able to start Friday morning and finished Saturday afternoon. He showed up early, which is unheard of for contractors, was professional, worked consistently, work is high quality, and his price was fair.

Audrey and James were our installers for 2 bathrooms. I bought most supplies - tubs toilets vanities lights etc. and the guys gutted and installed both bathrooms! Some key points: 1) integrity. They did what they said they would do. Showing up on time and a steady work pace 2) smart!! As with most jobs challenges occur. We wanted to move a toilet and beams in the way. We wanted to install lights in popcorn ceiling where no electricity or light was before. They ALWAYS figured out a way 3) clean. They always had drop cloths and swept and stacked materials. 4) professional. It took 10 days for 2 bathrooms and we are very pleased with results!!! Lead contractor Evan was great! Picked up and helped me return extra materials. Dayglo is the BEST!!

Wayne Moss is a consummate professional and expert carpenter, with proficiency in many other homebuilding and remodeling skills. He is extremely detail-oriented, listens and communicates well, and (unlike other contractors) stays in good communication as projects progress. His prices are very reasonable given the very high quality of his work. His crew members are well mannered professionals as well. I strongly recommend Moss Woodwork.

We had the worst time finding a contractor to save us from Hurricane Irma flooding our home on Black Creek. Scott and his guys are a lifesaver! Not only did they work nonstop until we were able to move back in, they also worked alongside our insurance company to get our lives back to normal! Highly recommend.

I had some wood rot to the faucet on my roof. Called Reed's Renovation and Repair to get an estimate. He showed up on time and listened to my needs and then looked everything over very throughly and gave me a good price for the repair. After having other contractors look at the work I went with Reed's Renovation and Repair due to the professionalism that Mr Reed showed at our first meeting. He showed up early on the day of the job and did a great job. I will definitely call Reed's Renovation and Repair again for any of my home remodeling needs.

Had my swimming pool re-marcited, pool deck repainted and patio stones replacing about 500 sq ft of my back yard adjacent to the pool deck. The finished project is very good overall. The paving part of the project is outstanding. The swimming pool really looks good also. The only less than favorable part of the project was the length of time it has taken to completed it and the inability to be able to know if or when the contractors work crews would arrive. There were a few problems during the process as it was finishing but the company representative working with us went out of his way to make sure the problems were corrected. I would recommend this company to anyone researching them but would suggest that a date/time schedule of the different work crews required be set up at the beginning of the project to be able to plan their activities around the crews presence or absence.

Steve Satchell repaired water-damaged floors in our formal living and dining room. We chose Steve to complete our project because he provided us with a fair and reasonable cost estimate as compared to quotes from other contractors. His finished work is excellent and the job was completed in a timely manner. We would recommend Steve for future projects.

We have an investment property that we did't remember to hire someone to mow. We are in Orlando and the property.is in Jacksonville. I found Chris through Thumbtack and he called me right away. The next day he went and mowed, cleaned out debris and tree limbs that had fallen. He checked the windows and found two opened and I had him go in and close them. He sent me plenty of pictures and updates and we feel very fortunate to have had him work for us. He even went back a week later and hung signs and checked on the property. Five stars, the place looks a hundred percent improved.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
