Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I enjoy providing my clients the benefit of my technical writing skills, an eye for detail, an ear for how things should sound from the reader's perspective and my experience teaching English at the middle school level. It combines two things I am passionate about: writing and communication. I get the pleasure of building and networking to form solid relationships while helping others with a talent at which I excel. It's a win-win situation.

I contacted Janice for a transcript I needed in 24 hours. I sent her the project and she agreed to have it ready in that time frame. I got 1/4 of the project the next night at 8pm. I asked her if she could have it done for me in 2 days. She said yes. On the second day at 6pm I get a text that she is still working on it. I agree with her that it is a time consuming project and I will pay more but could she have it the next day. She said she hoped to get it done that night but if not she would have it for sure on the next day. The next night at 9:30 I get a text from Janice saying that she is having difficulty with the project. To be fair, the recording on the web could have been an issue. She then said she would finish the project at no charge because she had promised that she would have it for me. The next day I get an email asking for an evaluation of her work. I called Janice and she explained she wouldn't be able to finish it because of the difficulty. She said she would send me what she had and wouldn't charge me. The bottom line is I got 53 minutes of a 157 minute presentation that I had really needed quickly. I was willing to wait 4 more days for a finished product but I wasn't aware how slowly Janice was going. Janice is personable but I think she wasn't truthful with me. Now I only have a third of a transcript that I really need and unfortunately, I can't in good conscience pay Janice because I will have to find someone to finish this up. Make sure of Janice's quote and availability. I know she has a full time job and is doing this on the side.

This particular job is not representative of normal dealings I have currently, and in the past, with my clients. That being said, this was a job that I should not have taken because of the technology from which I had to work in order to complete the transcription Susanne wanted. It is not in a format that lends itself to transcription. My error was in not evaluating what was needed before saying yes to the task. Once I got into the job, and saw the problems I was facing I tried my best to comply with what was needed. Again, I erred in not telling the client the problems right away. Because I wasn't going to meet her deadline I offered to finish the project at no charge. I'm not sure there was anything else I could have done at that point outside of this. I'm not sure what she meant by "making sure of Janice's quote". I didn't overstate my quote, and maybe even shortchanged myself, so I'm not sure where that's coming from. As far as my work schedule and how my time is spent, that is not an item that is up for debate. I've already assisted two clients with writing their memoirs, provided proof reading and editing for 4 other clients, and done other administrative work. I met with clients face-to-face as needed, was available by phone and email, and responded quickly to their needs. I am not compelled to tell people what I do with my time, however, I am honest; if asked I will state that I work full time. So, again, I'm not sure why Susanne felt compelled to state this in her review. This was a hard situation on both sides. It was also a learning experience for me in that it has caused me to put more structure around the services I am willing to provide.

The quality of the work was very good; the cost was quite reasonable. The only issue was her ability to accurately forecast completion dates, whether regarding a stage of the work, or, the overall body of work. That said, I will certainly hire her again - Janice is a valuable resource for anyone that needs temporary, but, still professional quality, administrative support.

FAQs

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

The person that entrusts me with their work is hiring someone that will operate at a high level of confidence and care. The revelation of the final product is the customers prerogative - not mine. The written word must be in the voice of the writer. I'm just the editor - the assistant, if you will.
