Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

Can I use digital payments to pay for fence and gate installation and repairs?

Currently, many fence and gate professional use common digital payment services like Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Zelle and more. Many more are quickly adopting the platforms as COVID-19 continues to force companies to digitally transform.

Contact the professional beforehand to discuss whether you can make digital payments, and take all measures to comply with social distancing recommendations. Compare fence professionals side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do fence installers offer remote or virtual services?

Because fence installation needs to be done in person, fence professionals usually cannot offer remote services. If you come across profiles that state they offer remote services, message the fence installer to see what those services include.

For consultations and meetings, ask the fence professional if you can coordinate a virtual consultation in which you explain the project to them through video, photos and drawings transferred online. If not, it may be wise to postpone the project and book an appointment at a later date

Kevin did a great job with my fence repair. His communication was prompt, he was on time, friendly, professional and got the job done quickly. He re-placed the 3 fence posts that were damaged, re-packed the soil and mulch around the area and it looks great. He also cleaned up after himself, which is a big deal to me. He is a hard worker and I would recommend him to anyone. He will be the first person I call next time I need help with getting projects done around the house!

Trevver repaired my current fence (reconstructed a majority of it) and built my tortoise a habitat. The work is beautiful. If I could grade solely on the work I would give five stars, but more goes into a project other than the work. I didn’t find him to be punctual at all and to be honest it was quite hard to get him to be there at all. I understand things come up, but it was ALWAYS something. A project be quoted taking two days took 36 days. He quoted me for inside work as well as the fence and never touched the inside of my home. He underbid the project then finished the fence as promised, but made sure I knew about the fact he under bid, which became comfortable after awhile. He is also extremely messy. He left a mess I had to clean up after each time he came then when finished left a mess for me as well. He didn’t bother to break down the fence he removed as promised and left that for me to figure out as well. I have a beautiful fence, but Trevver is NOT someone I would hire again.

My experience with Joe was great. I received an immediate response and he was able to come on short notice to repair my fence from Irma. He called prior to coming to let me know he was on his way. Called at the site to give me updates and ask if I wanted him to go ahead. Price was fair and as quoted.
