On your recommendation, I hired Mathew Crew, of M & A Quality Construction, Jacksonville, FL 32244 to do some crown moulding for me (approx. 300 linear ft). He showed up 2 hours late, then after 45 minutes left for Home Depot (3 miles away) and was gone for 2 hours. He only did one room and asked for money for materials for the next day. I (stupidly) gave him $450. The next day he showed up 2 1/2 hours late, with no materials so I fired him. I guess there is no way to get back any part of my money but you should know about the quality of this person who you recommended. I found another guy, on my own, within minutes, but am out a sizable amount of cash for very little work and materials, and a LOT of aggravation. Shame on M & A and shame on Thumtack (and I guess, shame on me for being so trusting).
M&A Quality Construction's reply
I will admit that I was late getting to Gary's house however, the footage started out at 200 linear feet. I submitted a quote of $3.50 per foot. Then the footage went up a considerable amount for a total of 298 feet which would have been over $1, 000 @ $3.50 per foot. He asked me if I would do the job for under $1000. I said I didn't have a problem with that as long as the materials didn't cost more than I had researched. I ended up giving him the total of $925 for materials and labor for 298 feet. He wanted me to pay for the materials upfront. I explained to him that I may not have enough money to cover all of the materials. He said to get what I could and he would reimburse me and give me the money for the rest of the materials when I got to his house. When I arrived he gave me $250 to get the rest of the materials which wasn't quite enough to get the rest of the materials. And I had to swap out some paint. Not to mention he didn't say the crown molding was to be painted and caulked in the job description to begin with. My quote would have been more than $3.50 per foot. At the end of the day yesterday there was another 36 feet added to the job.I was already 80 ft short with the money I was given for materials when I arrived. So I asked him for money before I left and he gave me $200. $100 of that was reimbursement for the materials I paid for out of my pocket and $100, which wouldn't have covered the 120 ft of crown molding that was needed to finish the job. I live almost an hour from his house and I paid my help for the day so that took care of the $200 he gave me. There is $340 worth of materials at his house and I paid my help $100. For Gary to say he is out $450 is absolute garbage. I don't take money from people that isn't owed. I ended up taking a loss by taking this job. So shame on Gary K for not giving an accurate description of the job and for not giving me enough money to pay for all the materials upfront. I do good work and I make sure the customer is happy. This guy was looking to get something for free and then expected me to be perfect and punctual when I wasn't going to make anything to begin with.
