I want to say she was horrible so no one else can have her; however that is not the case! Steph is great! This was my first time experiencing Mobile dog grooming. She was prompt, professional, personable, and kind. I love how my shipoo looks: clean cut and so loveable. She is so good with dogs. You can tell she has a genuine love for them. I love her and she's got my business for a lifetime.

Tasha and Happy Paws were absolutely amazing. They came and gave our dog Kaleb a bath, brushed his teeth, cleaned his ears and cut his hair for a great price! I could tell they took care of him because he was the happiest dog on the planet after his grooming. I definitely recommend them! The second best part was the fact that we didn't have to leave our house. Thanks Tasha!

Marcus came to my house to work with Dobby, a rescue dog with pretty severe aggression issues when it comes to strangers and any/all dogs. I was totally stressed out about going out of town and having a dog sitter come to my home to walk him a few times a day. I was afraid I'd have to put him down. One session and Dobby was a different dog. Marcus worked with Dobby, the dog sitter, and me. Additionally, he pulled in another dog with similar issues who lives across the street. After some correction from Marcus, we were able to walk these dogs together! Marcus will be back next week for additional training. He is a wonder; a true miracle worker. I recommend him 100%!

Alana Devers was the house and petsitter for me this summer. I have a difficult rescue dog, boxer pit mix, and a yorkie. She handled my dogs like the professional is expected. As a bonus, my house was nice and clean when I returned home! I highly recommend her.

i was lucky to find rachel at the last moment when i had to fly out of town suddenly. i usually leave lucie with a friend but she has been ill and couldn't watch her. rachel said she provided in-home services and could spend as much time as needed with lucie. rachel is one of the kindest people i know, she is reliable, dependable, and soft-spoken. she is a professional with a playful side, loves my dog and sends me photos of both lucie and my new adopted rescue lila every day i am gone. i live in an apartment and lucie and i walk twice daily at a neighborhood church. rachel had no problem with my request that she take lucie to the church for her walks. she has my home key and gets my mail if i ask as well as waters my plants. she is familiar with common pet health problems and i feel very comfortable recommending rachel to anyone who needs a loving pet sitter.

I was hesitant to use a service online to find someone to care for my beloved dog, Cali, but Melissa made me feel comfortable immediately and I knew Cali would be in great hands! I had Melissa over to my house first for a meet and greet with both Cali and me. It was immediately clear Cali was going to be well cared for and really liked Melissa. She jumped right in her lap and kept trying to get her to play, then finally settled down and fell asleep curled up on her. I almost felt like apologizing for Cali being so friendly! It was clear Melissa loves dogs and I had her bring her pug, Buster, with her to see their interactions as well. I feel at ease having Melissa come walk and play with Cali daily while I am at work. It started out as a couple times a week but now I have her come over daily. She sends pics and videos of Cali having a blast on the beach or in our yard and with her dog Buster. I have also had Melissa watch Cali when I had to go out of town for work and appreciated the frequent pics and updates while I was gone! I'm so happy to have found Melissa through ThumbTack and recommend her to all my friends! She even now walks my neighbor's dog a few times a week too.

Pet Grooming is also a visible expression of your love for your pet. When your pet is groomed, that expression is not only visible to the people all around, but something that your pet feels in a very positive and rewarding way. Overall, pets are more likely to remain healthy, both mentally and physically, when they are kept clean and well groomed. And of course, periodic grooming makes your pet look, smell and feel great.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

        What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

        What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

        • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
        • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
        • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
        • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
        • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
        • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

        • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
        • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
        • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
        • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
        • Wash and dry: $60
        • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
        • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
