I talked with Greg and from the beginning he wanted to know about the problem; so he went to the house; called me and explained everything. He realized that the existing water heater was attached to solar panels, so he started calling all the companies associated with it (took a lot of his time, that he minded but her knew he was helping). He already had a new water pump on his truck ready to go, but he had to go. After it was all said and done, he came back, took the hold water heater out, put the new one in place, connected everything and was a true life saver to my in-laws. Thank you so much for your help, they were grateful as was I. Highly recommended.

First I didn't have hot water, then it lost all water pressure after me trying to flush the water heater. I spoke to Nick thinking I needed a new water heater, he immediately educated me, and said to troubleshoot it first. Luis came out, troubleshot the issue and we are now happy campers with hot water, and the water pressure is back. Both Nick, and Luis were very professional, and were able to address my issue the same day I called. They are definitely keepers, and I will recommend Unique Improvement to my friends.

Sadly my neighborhood plumber of 25 years passed away a few months ago. I went on thumbtack app to find a new one. I took a chance on the first one that called me I'm glad that did. Estafan and Robert were friendly and on time and best of all besides doing a great job putting in a new water heater they cleaned up really well after themselves before they left LOL I actually have them coming back to fix the toilet in a few days I'm glad I found these guys!

I contacted Angel due to issues with my water heater. Angel was punctual and attempted to flush the water heater to get it working better. This would have saved me the cost of a new water heater had it worked. The flush wasn't enough so Angel replaced the heater at low cost despite its difficult location. It was tightly fitted into a small storage closet. I appreciated Angel's punctuality and attempt to save me money by flushing the old heater first rather than assuming I needed to buy a new one.

A+ if we were in school! Robert was professional, on time, quoted me right away and stuck to his number after the job was completed. He was able to repair the water heater rather than replace and that saved me $. I would definitely recommend RW Plumbing for your plumbing needs!

This guy is fantastic! First, he impressed me that he responded so quickly on a holiday weekend. Second, he picked up the water heater for me, extra parts and took away my old one all that Home Depot would have done. BUT there were two undiagnosed problems: an electrical short, and in a/c leak that he help with that Home Depot wouldn't have. He got all of that done in $100 less than Home Depots quote. Very professional, highly recommend!

Ed showed up the same day I called about our hot water heater shorting out & flipping the circuit breaker. He replaced the heating element and some pipes to upgrade the water intake to a valve instead of a faucet (which had become stripped). He discussed replacing the hot water heater down the road (it is more than 10 years old) and the cost of a tank vs tankless. When we do replace the water heater, we will call Hebert Plumbing.

I used Mike's Plumbing for my commercial buildout. It required brand new installation of a grease trap, hand sinks, 3 compartment sinks, electric water heater. I am thoroughly pleased with Mike and Mike Jr's work ethic and willingness to complete my job in a timely manner. They were both very accommodating, understanding and honest workers. I will 100% recommend them to anyone and I will be using them in the future for any plumbing needs that I may have. Thank you both!

Marcin has been to our home multiple times. First to help us renovate our master and guest bathrooms, which included a change in location for a toilet! While many other plumbers scoffed at the idea, Marcin said, "no problem!". Then he became our go-to plumber for other things like pipe failures, disposal upgrades, and we plan to call him again when we go tankless for our water heater. Marcin is prompt, professional, and well priced!

Ryan did a great job fixing the emergency repair I needed to my water heater. He quickly contacted me and was at my townhouse later that day. The price was fair and the job was done quickly and cleanly. Ryan even left to get more parts to make sure he had the right stuff. Definitely recommend him for your plumbing needs! Thanks Ryan!

Great job! One of our tenants had a pilot light out on their water heater and was unable to get it re-lit. Your Repair Specialist coordinated the time with the tenant, came out the same day, diagnosed the issue, and repaired it all within the service call timeline! They made this an easy problem to fix which is good because I was 1,000mi from the issue. Matt

My floor was wet in the hallway and also the water heater room. I called 855-GOT-LEAKS and a technician from A-1 arrived within the hour and performed a leak detection. The water heater was removed and special equipment was used then the bottom of the wall was opened exposing a leak from the water pipe coming up through the slab. The leaking line from the water heater went to the kitchen and when opening kitchen cabinet under sink exposing pipe found under all the kitchen base cabinets flooded. A-1 immediately advised the necessary steps and in very little time the water was extracted and water damage removed. The leaking water pipe under the slab was bypassed, the water heater was replaced, the homeowners insurance agreed to pay for a complete new kitchen all new tile floors wall repairs and mostly all of the plumbing bill was reimbursed. I am so extremely grateful that I called A-1 Dependable Plumbing & Remodeling 855-GOT-LEAKS they provide the highest quality and most professional service for any plumbing or remodeling need for a fair price. I highly recommend!!! Thanks again A-1.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.
