Used them last year, very fair in pricing and hard workers. Job bigger than expected but they held to price. They did run out of lawn bags and asked for money to get some...a tad unprofessional but just gave them part of their tip money and hope they were reimbursed. Just contacted them again for yearly cleanup so overall very pleased.

Brian was absolutely wonderful. I contacted his company to fix damages after my AC leaked, flooded my hallway, and damaged my floorboards. Rather than installing new floor boards, I wanted to have the exposed terrazzo polished, which I didn't think would be easy in a hallway. His attention to detail caught drywall damage as well that was missed in the initial inspection and everyone did an amazing job. He was polite, professional, and accommodated my rushed job over the Labor Day holiday. Needless to say, I will be contacting him for other jobs and truly appreciate his skill and flexibility.

My AC went out on a Saturday morning and I called my Home Warranty Company to fix the issue. The AC Company called and scheduled a window of 10 - 1 on Tuesday. I reached out to Alex AC on Thumbtack because I wanted to get some quotes on replacing the system in case the freon was gone (existing system was pretty old). I scheduled Alex for 2 pm on Tuesday. At 2 pm, Alex showed up while the other AC technician had not. Before the other technician arrived, Alex had already diagnosed the issue - a leaky evaporator coil (all freon was gone). Alex said he could come out the next day to replace both the compressor and air handler. He quoted me a price for labor and parts which was below what I could achieve in parts alone. Alex showed up with his team at 8:30 am the next day and by 12:30 my new HVAC was blowing cold air. I noticed a condensation issue the following day and called Alex. He came by the same day and fixed the issue. I have already recommended Alex to two others in my office who are contemplating getting a new HVAC system.

Same day service. Solomon replaced 2 bathroom sinks in 90 minutes. He was professional and knowledgeable. His price was less than I paid based on my knowledge of after hour rates for plumbers in the area. Therefore, I insisted on a higher rate. I highly recommend him for home projects.

I hired Arijiatos to put up drywall in between two bedrooms (the previous owner had removed it) and I said I needed it done quickly because my husband got a new job and we need to move and get the house ready quickly to list. They were able to schedule to begin the project two days after the initial quote and the job was done well and quickly and the workers were nice and respectful. We are now hiring them for more drywall work as well as flooring we need done. Thank you for helping us so quickly!!!

Your crazy if you don't hire these guys! Super hard workers, polite, great communication skills. I was informed ever step of the way! Felipe also helped my neighbors even though they were hot and tired. These guys mean business. More importantly the fence was installed correctly. Level, straight and the gate works perfectly.

I had a clogged kitchen sink. I have had this issue, ongoing for several years. One person guaranteed that it was going to be fixed. He was one before Paul. Needless to say, they did not. Before that three others. One said it was because my septic tank needed to be cleaned. Did that. Then they said $350 to "blow" out my pipes. $350 an hour! NO!!!! Called in another plumber. He snaked it . 10 minutes later, he says he can't do it and to call someone with electric tools. SMH So in desperation, I finally after days of trying to baby it, and nothing working, I finally decided to try yet again to find, hopefully, what in my mind was a fair, reasonable and honest plumber, I happened onto Thumbtack. Thank you. I filled out the request, and not really expecting much to be honest. Within an hour I received a bid. A very very reasonable price from only one and it was Paul. He offered to come the next morning, which happened to be Labor Day. I did not answer for two days, and after receiving a reminder, I finally agreed, I am so happy that I did. Paul is exactly whaI had a clogged kitchen sink. I have had this issue, ongoing for several years. One person guaranteed that it was going to be fixed. He was one before Paul. Paul is exactly who I had hoped for...pleasant, professional, fair, reasonable and honest. He came in and started right away with the electric snake. He said he could feel it. He worked with it a while. Then he used the industrial water ram (I had to look it up...lol). All this time he is visually monitoring the flow of water. Waiting for it to whirlpool down the drain. Then, finally, he brought out the handy dandy old-fashioned plumbers' tool...yep, a plunger. He then worked with his body weight to plunge through the rest of the clog he'd broken with his other tools. Finally, THE WHIRLPOOL!! He ran the water several minutes. It has been great to wash dishes all at once. Not having to wash in intervals, waiting for the water to drain. If that wasn't enough, he offered to clean up the mess AND TO put everything back under the sink. I appreciated the offer, but told him that I would do it...happily. I will definitely recommend him to my family and friends. I RECOMMEND HIM TO ANY AND ALL THAT READ THIS REVIEW. THANK YOU PAUL!! THANK YOU THUMBTACK!

Mr. Glastad responded promptly to my request and ended up doing a service I didn’t have originally on my list because a more immediate need arose (roof leak). The day he came out just to give me quotes he also patched up the leaky roof areas and did so with limited time because I needed to get to work. I plan to utilize his services for future handyman projects.

Donald Johnson (Preferred Home Improvements) was professional, punctual, knowledgeable and thorough. The job was completed early and there was no trace of garbage/material left behind on the job site. There is only one caveat and it has to do with Don's laborer. I believe he accidentally walked away with my blue pry/crowbar thinking it was his. I would hire Don again to do odds and ends around the house.

They did labor intensive work such as French and Louvered doors with great attention to detail. At the end of the job, we did a walk-thru and they did any touch ups I thought was needed. I recommend the company.

Mr. Bentley arrived on time, kept to his quoted price(labor only), and then purchased the materials with our approval. He went to the the hardware store, sought out the appropriate supplies, called us to tell us the price, and we paid over the phone. He completed the job same day and was professional in his conduct. I will definitely be seeking him out to complete other projects in my house.

I needed a section of wood shadowbox style fence and a gate installed between my house and the existing fence on the side of my yard in order to close off my back yard from the front yard. Bo did an outstanding job! He was very professional, upfront about material and labor costs, and got the job completed in one day! He did high-quality work for a fraction of the cost of the other estimates I received. I would highly recommend him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
