Jim did an amazing job repairing and retexturing my ceiling sheetrock. I was so stressed first off because of what I was going through and secondly, about how it was going to look since it was literally right in the middle of my living room ceiling. I can say now with confidence thank God I hired Jim. His work is clean, and nearly flawless, it is not patchy and/or gross looking. If I didn’t know what had happened, I honestly do not think you would be able to tell it was patched at all. Jim is extremely professional, respectful, and creative. For the work he did his prices are very reasonable. Jim came in slightly higher than the other companies, who came out and gave me a quote. However, I am so grateful I went with Jim, the difference in price really showed in the quality of the work. Jim we want you to know that we are very pleased with the quality of service your provided. We sincerely appreciate your responsiveness and the way you conduct business. We have and will continue to recommended your company to others because of our satisfaction with your service. We look forward to doing business with you for years to come.

Jeff showed up when he said he would and he went right to work. He took care of replacing a ceiling fan and light fixture for me. He was very efficient and did a wonderful job. I could not be happier. He was more than fair with his price. I would be happy to use Jeff's services again and recommend him to anyone who needs a household project completed properly.

Mia and her team did a good deep clean of our newly bought house. Her husband even repainted the vents and gave some advice on possible improvements. A nice extra service. A few spots, like a ceiling fan and one bathroom were skipped, it now seems. That why I give 4 instead of 5 stars. But overall, we are very satisfied and would hire her again.

Tyler is amazing. He is courteous, responsive, punctual, efficient and did great work. He took down and hung ceiling fans and hung a few different lighting pieces as well as hung a headboard on the wall. I thought I needed woodwork done and he was fully able to do that also, had I needed it. He is great and I would definitely hire him again.

I was definitely very satisfied with the service I received from REStar Construction. I had a leak in my ceiling from the water line connected to my refrigerator. It took a while for me to notice it and several more days to find it. By the time VJ came to evaluate the problem everything was soaking wet. It was a bit of a challenge because I wanted to save the wall paper on one side of the wall that had been affected. It was a Sunday evening but VJ ( the owner of the company) and his wife came immediately after completing another Job. He was attentive, compassionate and was adamant about working with me to honor my requests. He was professional, studied the problem and came to a quick diagnosis and solution for the problem. I was able to save my wall and any issues regarding mold or damaged were addressed to my satisfaction. Brandy, a member of the REStar team monitored the progress over the couple of days it took to complete the job. She too was awesome, professional and attentive to detail. Last but not lease the cost was very reasonable. Overall a great company!! Knowledgeable and competent. I highly recommend them!! Thank you REStar!!

I was very pleased with Tina, Joe and Guy! The team did a great job for me with a laundry list of projects. They reframed my kitchen counter into a breakfast bar, cut out my old cabinet above my stove and installed a new microwave hood combo, re-routed my dryer vent from the garage over the attic to the outside wall, and finally painted my kitchen and laundry. It was bid, contracted, planned and executed in less than a week! The actual work was done in a day! They did a good job cleaning up. We will certainly use them again. Joe gave me some great ideas for updating the ceiling and lighting in the kitchen, as well as painting my cabinets. Thanks Ace High!

These guys are the best. They gave me a quote for acoustic ceiling removal and retexture, then modified based on our needs and project. They were able to get the job done in a few days and kept communicating throughout. They were also kind enough to send photos (since we are off-site). I would definitely hire them again. Thanks very much!

We hired Phil Foster with KAI Vision Builders for a project at our recently purchased home in St. Pete We had them Install sliding glass doors in the master bedroom. Out the doors we had them make a patio with an overhang and install a ceiling fan. Additional multiple indoor minor projects- cat door, bathroom exhaust fan, extra outlet in bedroom and washer drain. I am extremely pleased with outcome of the project. All was reasonably priced and Phil graciously did not nickel and dime us on a couple of the extras. I really appreciated Phils knowledge and attention to detail. He communicated well during the entire process and I am very happy to have chosen him for our project. I would highly recommend their services and would definitely hire them again should I need further work done.

Mr. Snook has handled several large and small projects for my home, all on time and on budget. He did an outstanding job upgrading my living room with laminate flooring, new paint, lighting, and mounting my flat screen TV with concealed wiring and cables. He also completely remodeled my patio and transformed it into a beautiful outdoor living space which I use daily (tiled floor, installed ceiling fan and sun shade, wall mounted tv). In addition to the actual remodeling work, Mr. Snook was extremely helpful in planning the interior design elements of both rooms. He is also quite skilled at less "fun" but very necessary home repair projects, including replacing my water heater and a leaky toilet and repairing water damaged drywall. I was thoroughly pleased with all of Mr. Snook's work and will without question use him for my future home remodeling and repair needs. I have recommended Mr. Snook to several family members and friends. He did an amazing job completely remodeling my mother's 1980's era bathrooms, which substantially increased the resale value of her home and led to a quick sale when listed. Joanne L.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
