Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

What is a dog boot camp?

A dog boot camp is basically a board and train program that focuses on training your dog or puppy. The trainers will work with your dog to curb unwanted behavior, teach them basic skills and show them how to walk on a leash.

Dog boot camps and training programs might differ when it comes to their services, so it’s always a good idea to do your research and ask them to explain exactly what they offer — and how much they charge.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behave as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

I have no words to express how much gratitude I feel towards Nathaniel and Sebastian at Silver Dog Training! I have tried 2 previous in home trainers for my dog, and she learned some of the cues but regressed quickly. With the boarding option Silver Dog Training offers and then the carryover in home training, it was a home run! Whenever my friends ask me where to get their dog trained, my answer will always be with Nathaniel and Sebastian. 100% recommend for anyone looking for dog training!

I hired Silver dog training to help train my dog (and me) to bring some sanity back into our home. Our dog Buddy responded so well after just one visit that we are maintaining training on a daily basis with weekly visits from Nathanial for advanced training. He has taught me how to use verbal commands and other techniques that have turned our crazy hyper and defiant pup into obedient & attentive. I would definitely recommend Silver dog training!

Franco is truly amazing with his God-given talent. He takes the time to explain what makes a dog tick. Realistically, his title should not be dog trainer but people trainer. We have learned so much from him in regards to how a dog thinks and as a result we have a very well behaved dog.

We came across K9 because we were having problems with our dog, nuez. She was being reactive to people and dogs and too nervous all the time. They answer me right away to help us and I’m glad we did choose them to train her. They did an incredible job with her. She is a confident dog now and her obedience is perfect after the training with Bar. I highly recommend K9 to train your dog.

My partner and I are thrilled with the results of our dog's training! I spent a long time trying to find the right trainer because I knew our dog was a special case full of bad habits that needed fixing. Especially since we had tried other training classes in the past with no success. Full Potential stuck out immediately though! They're training technique is incredibly effective and it shows. We feel like we have a brand new dog!

Nathaniel is a top notch dog trainer! He has taught us the intricacies of dog training and has taken our rambunctious young Pitt bull and has helped to transform her into a mature, socialized, happy dog who knows all the basic commands and is eager to please us with her obedience. We highly recommend Nathaniel.

Nathaniel is an amazing balanced dog trainer! Although he seems to specialize a lot in training aggressive or reactive dogs, he was happy to teach us about how to do basic training for our new 6-month puppy, Sterling. You can tell he really loves dogs and he puts a lot of care and effort into the training. He is also very nice, always on time, and explains everything clearly. His training sessions are very affordable and customizable. You can ask him to focus on training specific commands, and you can choose how many sessions you want to do. He was able to run us through the basic training program in just three sessions, and you can tell he tries to pack as much information and practice into each session as possible to make the most of it. Even if you do just one session, you will learn a lot. Instead of just training your dog for you, he teaches you and gives you the resources needed for training your dog yourself. In a session, he gives you plenty of information on why he does certain techniques, shows you how to do the training exercises, and then he has you do the training exercises a couple times to make sure you're doing it correctly. Then he gives you some homework to do during the time before your next session. After the sessions, you will understand how to train your dog longterm so you won't have to rely on any other trainers. Since we've had Nathaniel teaching us, we have learned a ton of information and now feel much better-equipped to train our dog throughout his lifetime. Sterling has made a lot of progress so far and is turning out to be a fantastic dog. We are extremely happy with this training and can't wait to use what we learned in the future!

Cliff has a wonderful way of communicating with not only dogs but also their owners. He provides clear instructions while training and leaves written instructions for use in reinforcing what was learned. His training has made an enormous difference in my dog's behaviors and in how I communicate with them. I would highly recommend Cliff for any training needs.

Cliff is an exceptional trainer. We had a pretty severe case of aggression with our dog. Our dog is a 5 year old shepherd lab mix and 100 pounds so dealing with the aggression was pretty hard so we hired Cliff. We were a little nervous in the beginning because we are very protective of our "baby." Cliff showed great professionalism and is very skilled and trained trainer. We now trust Cliff 110% with our dog and he has taught us so much!!! Our dogs behavior has improved so much and even friends and family have noticed and commented. His past behaviors included biting, aggression towards other dogs on walks, not listening to us and overall stubbornness and if he didn't want to do it he wasn't going to. We still have things to learn and more training to do but our dog has definitely had a major improvement and continues to learn from Cliff. If you are looking for a trainer for your dog Cliff is your guy!

My dog had a bit of aggression issues and mainly with other dogs. He is a Shepard/Akita mix, a Potcake rescue from the Bahamas. He was really a handful to deal with, horrible on a leash, and refused to obey most of the time. I have been working with Silver for past few weeks and I now have a wonderful dog that loves the dog park, and I am now working on off leash training. I could not be happier with the training and advice. I must say that I boarded him briefly and really think that instilled the best training. Thank you so much for the care and attention that we received.

Jane responded quickly to my request for a dog trainer. I wanted a trainer who would come to my home and train me and our dog. First I spent time on the phone with Jane to identify my needs and what I wanted to accomplish. Next Jane met me and our dog at my home for a 2 hour training session. Jane provided techniques on how to work on wait, & come and how to apply in different situations. Most helpful was her guidance in training him to walk without lunging and pulling. Since our session Jane continues to call and follow up with our progress. And to offer new suggestions. We are grateful for her help and continued support.

I took my dog in for the board and train and would receive videos from Joe frequently. For the three week in home training Nathaniel has been great! He is very profesional and knowledgeable. Even though my dog is older he was sure he’s could train him. Nathaniel showed me how to follow up on the training that had already been done and showed me how to properly deal with his reactivity. I’m excited to see how much Poopies behavior improves.

After rescuing our abused reactive dog, Georgia, we couldn’t train her for eight months due to her medical needs. During this time her fear and her misbehaviors increased. We were surprised and excited by the great positive changes in her behavior after just a few sessions with Nathaniel. He has given us the tools we need to continue our training with Georgia. We would highly recommend Silver Dog Training.

Nathaniel is very professional, knowledgeable. Before booking, we spoke in detail about his methods and the “why” behind them. Leaving me confident in my decision. Already, there is tremendous progress in Cooper’s training and behavior. Nathanial went over in detail Cooper’s training plan and gave demonstrations in different environments (inside, back yard, front yard, with dogs, with people). He truly cares about the dogs he trains and communicates well with the owners. I highly recommend !
