Instant on hot water heater failed due to poor installation by another contractor. Job included consultation, installation to code, upgrade of circuit breaker, addition of junction box, and replacing improper wiring. Background: this is a vacation rental unit I have in Miramar. Guests arrived to find hot water not working. Mr. Raffael took my call at 9:30pm on a Friday, and agreed to be at the unit at around 10am the next morning. He continued to stay in contact the following morning as he progressed towards the house, arrived at the agreed upon time, assessed the situation and provided an estimate of parts, labor and time to complete the job. He completed the work as agreed. Documented it in writing and with pics. In Summary: He helped me in an emergency - accepted a very late call, and quickly delivered a solution. I am 100% satisfied, and would most certainly call on him again, and recommend him to others. Thank you Mr. Raffael.

Circuit breaker kept turning off on our hot water heater. Taylan responded within minutes and scheduled a visit a couple hours later. He arrived on time, even in stormy weather. He tested the thermostat and heating element and found the thermostat had burned out. He replaced it quickly and stayed to make sure it was working and didn't trip the circuit breaker again. We will call him the next time we need something done around our home!

Repaired a wall in a tight spot inside a cabinet. The wall looks great and he left the area spotless when he finished. He also fixed a leak inside the toilet tank. This toilet is from 1960 and the parts are fragile. And I appreciate the fact that he took special precaution not to damage the parts in the tank while replacing the washer. Pleasure to work with.Great job-Very fair price.

First I didn't have hot water, then it lost all water pressure after me trying to flush the water heater. I spoke to Nick thinking I needed a new water heater, he immediately educated me, and said to troubleshoot it first. Luis came out, troubleshot the issue and we are now happy campers with hot water, and the water pressure is back. Both Nick, and Luis were very professional, and were able to address my issue the same day I called. They are definitely keepers, and I will recommend Unique Improvement to my friends.

Put in a request at 11pm last night for a new hot water heater install and to run a new line for hot water to our washing machine that was non-existent- received a response almost immediately that a tech could be here between 9 and 10 this morning. Ariel was at our house by 9:30am, gave a fair price, and was able to be able to begin the job immediately. We are very happy with the excellent customer service provided and a job well done, will recommend/use again

I recently had a plumber to my home who claimed he could install the ECO 27 tankless hot water heater and do BOTH the plumbing and electrical work required. He completed the plumbing piece with no problem. Unfortunately he was not able to complete the electrical piece of this project. Motor Singh came to my home on a holiday weekend, immediately diagnosed and resolved the electrical issues! He was familiar with these units and knew exactly how to get them working! I will definitely hire this professional again!

Stefan called within seconds of my providing my phone number. He listened to what my issue was and gave a level of expectation. He then asked if he could come by and give an estimate. I agreed. He said he could be by around 2:30pm - 3pm but it was dependent upon how he progressed the job he was working on. He called to let me know it would probably be around 4pm and he was good to his word arriving just after 4pm. After reviewing the problem and suggesting a number of options, suggesting that the simplest was probably the best he gave me a rough estimate. I accepted. He asked if he could get started right away - as we had been without a kitchen sink for nearly a week, we were very pleased to hear him ask and we agreed. He, and his assistant, got to work right away. They removed the problem pipe that was inside our kitchen wall, replaced it with a new pipe and included a suitable kitchen sink waste pipe connection. They also replaced the hot and cold water pipes at my request, including new shut off valves. Upon completion of the work, they tested the waste pipe and the hot and cold water supply pipes. There was a leak on the hot pipe that they removed and replaced in quick time. The final leak test was all ok. After testing, they cleaned up, taking care to vacuum out the dust created when they had to break into the kitchen wall. They mopped up the very small amount of water that escaped. Throughout they were professional, cheerful, positive, thoughtful, especially about keeping the cost under control. Much to my delight, they completed the job in a single visit. I would highly recommend PayLess. As it happens, I had contacted another plumber that was recommended by a relative, but that plumber did not even bother to turn up at the appointed time. My thanks to Stafan for his excellent work and for keeping the cost very reasonable. Paul

I had a plumbing emergency during a weekday. He was at my house within an hour of receiving my call. He was prepared with tools and replacement parts. He was extremely efficient and even cleaned up after himself! I was also impressed by his demeanor. My shower works great. I actually called him a week later to fix my hot water tank and experienced the same kind of professionalism. I give this company a 5 star rating.

I needed to get my hot water working again after our Titan Instahot tankless water heater gave out. We've only had the house a couple of weeks so it was quite disappointing. I sent out a thumbtack message way after midgnight and by early next morning, Mike was one of the people who responded. When I called it was really great that Mike offered a free inspection of the plumbing, which he was able to do within a few hours that day. Not only is Mike familiar with tankless and was able to provide several options regarding that, but he was also able to provide me with estimates for going with an appropriate tank as well. Both options included what turned out to be an accurate estimate for the necessary electrical work as well. Mike was quickly able to recommend a great electrician (also called Mike) and everyone was able to work on the fix within 48 hours of the original thumbtack posting. Mike, Junior and Mike are great guys and I really appreciate how quickly and economically they fixed the problem. Couldn't be happier.

David is AWESOME! He replaced my old hot water tank...a 10-year-old, 75-gallon, beast. I ordered a new A.O. Smith tank from SupplyHouse.com for $948, including shipping and no sales tax. David and his assistant installed the tank, replaced old lines, fixed an improperly installed gas line for an unbeatable price. They removed the old tank, packing materials, cleaned up, all in a matter of a few short hours. Everything works well, and we had hot water in less than an hour. We will be using him again for other plumbing projects. And, on top of his skill, he's a really great guy!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
